2 Column Packing Accessories Pumps Standard Slurry Packer High-Capacity Slurry Packer 5375 This self-contained solvent/slurry delivery module is designed for use in any laboratory with the need to produce its own HPLC columns. The unit is very compact and can be operated in virtually any location that has a source of compressed air (50 to 125psig, 3-4CFM). Powered by an air amplification pump, the unit is capable of packing columns of both analytical and semi-preparative scale (2.1mm to 10mm ID). An air regulator located on the face of the unit provides an easy control of the packing pressure. All operating pressures are clearly displayed on two large gauges to ensure safe and effective column production. A two-way slider valve is incorporated into the solvent delivery system, which allows either of two pressurizing solvents or a wash solvent to be used without shutting down the system. Detailed directions make it possible to produce quality HPLC columns with minimal practice. Each Alltech Slurry Packer comes with a 20mL slurry reservoir and a 4.6mm ID pre-column assembly. Individual reservoir assembly components and complete reservoir kits of other volumes and sizes are available to enhance the versatility of the packing unit. The unit is safe to operate and, with the addition of a toggle valve to the air supply, may be activated from a remote location. The pump is a single-action, reciprocating-plunger pump. The drive is a pilot-controlled, continuously-cycling, double-acting, air cylinder. This particular pump model has a practical work ratio of 122:1 (drive area to liquid plunger area - e.g. when driven with an inlet air pressure of 100psig, the pump would produce 12,200psig hydraulic pressure). The apparatus is intended for permanent installation, requiring that it be bolted or otherwise fixed to a benchtop. Solvent pressure gauge, slurry reservoir, and empty columns are not included. The industry standard frit/insert means it will contain a stop depth equal to 0.100" (see Figure 1). A stainless steel frit is pressed into the PEEK insert piece with the resulting assembly providing strength and improved sealing. A 2.0µm frit is standard, but 0.5µm porosities are available. Adaptors and sealing rings are available for slurry packing your own columns (see Figure 2). 4 Column Packing Accessories Empty Hardware Metal-Free PEEK-Lined 2.1 and 4.6mm ID Columns The Inertness of PEEK with the Strength of Stainless Steel Stainless Steel Outer Tube Allows Continuous Use to 8,000psig Available in 30 to 300mm Lengths Alltech s PEEK-Lined metal-free columns introduce a new level of mechanical strength to PEEK column hardware. By using a stainless steel outer wall with a PEEK liner, these columns have higher pressure ratings than standard PEEK hardware, but still provide a completely inert flow path. The column hardware consists of the column tube, two PEEK endfittings and two frit/inserts to retain the packed bed (see Figure 1). The endfittings feature standard CPI female ports, allowing easy plumbing with 1/16" OD tubing and standard fittings. PAT (PEEK alloyed with TFE) frits in the frit/insert assemblies are a unique porous material which combines inertness and durability. Adaptors and sealing rings are available for slurry packing your own columns. Metal-Free MF-Plus 7.5mm ID Columns Completely Biocompatible and Chemically Inert Rated for Continuous Use to 5,000psig Available in 50 to 300mm Lengths Alltech s MF-Plus metal-free column hardware has the mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and chemical resistance that ion chromatography and biotechnology applications demand. The basic column design is shown in Figure 2. The column itself consists of a threaded PEEK tube and two PEEK endfittings with the packed bed held in place by two PAT (PEEK Alloyed with TFE) frits. The endfittings accept 1/16" OD tubing via industry standard fittings. A distribution cone in the endfittings improves peak shape by optimal placement of the sample across the entire crosssection of the packed bed. 8 Column Accessories Frits Encased Stainless Steel and PAT Frits Better Peak Symmetry Better Sealing Better Mechanical Stability These frits are encased in rings of either PEEK, carbon-reinforced PEEK or stainless steel (SS). Because the carbon-reinforcement maintains its shape, it will not expand and stick in the end fitting like other plastic-encased frits. The diameter of the frit is matched to the inside diameter of the column, preventing sample and mobile phase from entering the space between the endfitting and the top of the column tube. As shown in the accompanying chromatograms, elimination of this stagnant flow pocket improves peak symmetry. 19 Alltech High-Pressure Fittings Direct-Connect Universal Column Adaptor* Works with Male or Female Fittings Universal Adjusts to HPLC Fitting or Column Seals Finger-Tight to 5,000psig 5428 Alltech s Direct-Connect Universal Column Adaptor is available in PEEK or Graph-Tite material. This fitting allows the connection of any column to the instrument in just seconds without the use of tools. The adaptor takes the place of the stainless steel nut and ferrule that normally connects the column to the instrument. Instead, an inert polymer ferrule/thread combination is used to make the connections. By hand tightening, the ferrule grips the tubing to form a seal leak-free to 5,000psig. Since the polymeric ferrule does not bite or swage the tube, the adaptor is free to adjust to fit any mating fitting instantly! By gripping the tubing in two places (see Figure 1), the DSF has increased holding power without concentrating all the force on one area of the tubing.
