Safety Precautins It is imprtant that all persnnel bserve safety precautins t minimize the chances f injury. Amng many cnsideratins, the fllwing shuld be particularly nted: Blwer casing and assciated piping r accessries may becme ht enugh t cause majr skin burns n cntact. Internal and external rtating parts f the blwer and driving equipment can prduce serius physical injuries. D nt reach int any pening in the blwer while it is perating, r while subject t accidental starting. Prtect external mving parts with adequate guards. Discnnect pwer befre ding any wrk, and avid bypassing r rendering inperative any safety r prtective devices. If blwer is perated with piping discnnected, place a strng carse screen ver the inlet and avid standing in the discharge air stream. CAUTION: Never cver the blwer inlet with yur hand r ther part f bdy. Stay clear f inlet and discharge penings. Stay clear f the blast frm pressure relief valves and the suctin area f vacuum relief valves. Use prper care and gd prcedures in handling, lifting, installing, perating and maintaining the equipment. Casing pressure must nt exceed 25 psi (1725 mbar) gauge. D nt pressurize vented cavities frm an external surce, nr restrict the vents withut first cnsulting Hwden. D nt use air blwers n explsive r hazardus gases. Other ptential hazards t safety may als be assciated with peratin f this equipment. All persnnel wrking in r passing thrugh the area shuld be trained t exercise adequate general safety precautins. Operating Limitatins A Rts blwer r exhauster must be perated within certain apprved limiting cnditins t enable cntinued satisfactry perfrmance. Warranty is cntingent n such peratin. Maximum limits fr pressure, temperature and speed are specified in Table 1, page 13 fr varius mdels & sizes f blwers & exhausters. These limits apply t all units f nrmal cnstructin, when perated under standard atmspheric cnditins. Be sure t arrange cnnectins r taps fr instruments such as thermmeters and pressure r vacuum gauges at r near the inlet and discharge cnnectins f the unit. These, alng with a tachmeter, will enable peridic checks f perating cnditins. Pressure The pressure rise, between inlet and discharge, must nt exceed the figure listed fr the specific unit frame size cncerned. Als, in any system where the unit inlet is at a psitive pressure abve atmsphere a maximum case rating f 25 PSI gauge (1725 mbar) shuld nt be exceeded withut first cnsulting Rts. Never shuld the maximum allwable differential pressure be exceeded. On vacuum service, with the discharge t atmspheric pressure, the inlet suctin r vacuum must nt be greater than values listed fr the specific frame size. Temperature Blwer & exhauster frame sizes are apprved nly fr installatins where the fllwing temperature limitatins can be maintained in service: Measured temperature rise must nt exceed listed values when the inlet is at ambient temperature. Ambient is cnsidered as the general temperature f the space arund the unit. This is nt utdr temperature unless the unit is installed utdrs. If inlet temperature is higher than ambient, the listed allwable temperature rise values must be reduced by 2/3 f the difference between the actual measured inlet temperature and the ambient temperature. The average f the inlet and discharge temperature must nt exceed 250 F. (121 C). The ambient temperature f the space the blwer/mtr is installed in shuld nt be higher than 120 F (48.8 C). Speed These blwers & exhausters may be perated at speeds up t the maximum listed fr the varius frame sizes. They may be direct cupled t suitable cnstant speed drivers if pressure/temperature cnditins are als within limits. At lw speeds, excessive temperature rise may be a limiting factr. Special Nte: The listed maximum allwable temperature rise fr any particular blwer & exhauster may ccur well befre its maximum pressure r vacuum rating is reached. This may ccur at high altitude, lw vacuum r at very lw speed. The units perating limit is always determined by the maximum rating reached first. It can be any ne f the three: Pressure, Temperature r Speed. 4 ISRB-2001 GEA20258 rev._04_16

Installatin Hwden blwers & exhausters are treated after factry assembly t prtect against nrmal atmspheric crrsin. The maximum perid f internal prtectin is cnsidered t be ne year under average cnditins, if shipping plugs & seals are nt remved. Prtectin against chemical r salt water atmsphere is nt prvided. Avid pening the unit until ready t start installatin, as crrsin prtectin will be quickly lst due t evapratin. If there is t be an extended perid between installatin and start up, the fllwing steps shuld be taken t ensure crrsin prtectin. Cat internals f cylinder, gearbx and drive end bearing reservir with Nx-Rust VCI-10 r equivalent. Repeat nce a year r as cnditins may require. Nx-Rust VCI-10 is petrleum sluble and des nt have t be remved befre lubricating. It may be btained frm Daubert Chemical C., 2000 Spring Rd., Oak Brk, Ill Paint shaft extensin, inlet and discharge flanges, and all ther expsed surfaces with Nx-Rust X-110 r equivalent. Seal inlet, discharge, and vent penings. It is nt recmmended that the unit be set in place, piped t the system, and allwed t remain idle fr extended perids. If any part is left pen t the atmsphere, the Nx-Rust VCI-10 vapr will escape and lse its effectiveness. Prtect units frm excessive vibratin during strage. Rtate shaft three r fur revlutins every tw weeks. Prir t start up, remve flange cvers n bth inlet and discharge and inspect internals t ensure absence f rust. Check all internal clearances. Because f the cmpletely enclsed unit design, lcatin f the installatin is generally nt a critical matter. A clean, dry and prtected indr lcatin is preferred. Hwever, an utdr lcatin will nrmally give satisfactry service. Imprtant requirements are that the crrect grade f lubricating il be prvided fr expected perating temperatures, and that the unit be lcated s that rutine checking and servicing can be perfrmed cnveniently. Prper care in lcating driver and accessry equipment must als be cnsidered. Supervisin f the installatin by a Hwden Service Engineer is nt usually required fr these units. Wrkmen with experience in installing light t medium weight machinery shuld be able t prduce satisfactry results. Handling f the equipment needs t be accmplished with care, and in cmpliance with safe practices. Unit munting must be slid, withut strain r twist, and air piping must be clean, accurately aligned and prperly cnnected. Bare-shaft Units: Tw methds are used t handle a unit withut base. One is t use lifting lugs blted int the tp f the unit headplates. Test them first fr tightness and fractures by tapping with a hammer. In lifting, keep the directin f cable pull n these blts as nearly vertical as pssible. If lifting lugs are nt available, lifting slings may be passed under the cylinder adjacent t the headplates. Either methd prevents strain n the extended drive shaft. Packaged Units: When the unit is furnished munted n a baseplate, with r withut a driver, use f lifting slings passing under the base flanges is required. Arrange these slings s that n strains are placed n the unit casing r munting feet, r n any munted accessry equipment. DO NOT use the lifting lugs in the tp f the unit headplates. Befre starting the installatin, remve plugs, cvers r seals frm unit inlet and discharge cnnectins and inspect the interir cmpletely fr freign material. If cleaning is required, finish by washing the cylinder, headplates and impeller thrughly with a petrleum slvent. Turn the drive shaft by hand t make sure that the impellers turn freely at all pints. Anti-rust cmpund n the cnnectin flanges and drive shaft extensin may als be remved at this time with the same slvent. Cver the flanges until ready t cnnect piping. Munting Care will pay dividends when arranging the unit munting. This is especially true when the unit is a bare-shaft unit furnished withut a baseplate. The cnvenient prcedure may be t munt such a unit directly n a flr r small cncrete pad, but this generally prduces the least satisfactry results. It definitely causes the mst prblems in leveling and alignment and may result in a Sft Ft cnditin. Crrect sft ft befre peratin t avid unnecessary lading n the casing and bearings. Direct use f building structural framing members is nt recmmended. Fr blwers withut a base, it is recmmended that a well anchred and carefully leveled steel r cast irn munting plate be prvided. The plate shuld be at least 1 inch (25 mm) thick, with its tp surface machined flat, and large enugh t prvide leveling areas at ne side and ne end after the unit is munted. It shuld have prperly sized studs r tapped hles lcated t match the unit ft drilling. Prper use f a high quality machinist s level is necessary fr adequate installatin. With the munting plate in place and leveled, set the unit n it withut blting and check fr rcking. If it is nt slid, determine the ttal thickness f shims required under ne ft t stp rcking. Place half f this under each f the diagnallyppsite shrt feet, and tighten the munting studs r screws. Rtate the drive shaft t make sure the impellers turn freely. If the unit is t be direct cupled t a driving mtr, cnsider the height f the mtr shaft and the necessity fr it t be aligned very accurately with the unit shaft. Best unit arrangement is directly blted t the munting plate while the driver is n shims f at least 1/8 inch (3mm) thickness. This allws adjustment f mtr psitin in final shaft alignment by varying the shim thickness. Aligning When unit and driver are factry munted n a cmmn baseplate, the assembly will have been prperly aligned and is t be treated as a unit fr leveling purpses. Satisfactry installatin can be btained by setting the baseplate n a cncrete slab that is rigid and free f vibratin, and leveling the tp f the base carefully in tw directins s that it is free f twist. The slab must be prvided with suitable anchr blts. The use f gruting under and partly inside the leveled and shimmed base is recmmended. ISRB-2001 GEA20258 rev._04_16 5

It is pssible fr a base-munted assembly t becme twisted during shipment, thus disturbing the riginal alignment. Fr this reasn, make the fllwing checks after the base has been leveled and blted dwn. Discnnect the drive and rtate the unit shaft by hand. It shuld turn freely at all pints. Lsen the unit ft hld-dwn screws and determine whether all feet are evenly in cntact with the base. If nt, insert shims as required and again check fr free impeller rtatin. Finally, if unit is direct cupled t the driver, check shaft and cupling alignment carefully and make any necessary crrectins. In planning the installatin, and befre setting the unit, cnsider hw piping arrangements are dictated by the unit design and assembly. Drive shaft rtatin must be established accrdingly and is indicated by an arrw near the shaft. Typical arrangement n vertical units has the drive shaft at the tp with cunterclckwise rtatin and discharge t the left. Hrizntal units are typically arranged with the drive shaft at the left with cunterclckwise rtatin and discharge dwn. See Figure 4 fr ther varius unit arrangements and pssible cnversins. When a unit is DIRECT COUPLED t its driver, the driver RPM must be selected r gverned s as nt t exceed the maximum speed rating f the unit. Refer t Table 1, page 13 fr allwable speeds f varius unit sizes. A flexible type cupling shuld always be used t cnnect the driver and unit shafts. When direct cupling a mtr r engine t a blwer yu must ensure there is sufficient gap between the cupling halves and the element t prevent thrust lading the blwer bearings. When a mtr, engine r blwer is perated the shafts may expand axially. If the cupling is installed in such a manner that there is nt enugh rm fr expansin the blwer shaft can be frced back int the blwer and cause the impeller t cntact the gear end headplate resulting in damage t the blwer. The tw shafts must be in as near perfect alignment in all directins as pssible, and the gap must be established with the mtr armature n its electrical center if end-play exists. Cupling manufacturer s recmmendatins fr maximum misalignment, althugh acceptable fr the cupling, are nrmally t large t achieve smth peratin and maximum life f the blwer. The fllwing requirements f a gd installatin are recmmended. When selecting a cupling t be fitted t the blwer shaft Rts recmmends a taper lck style cupling t ensure prper cntact with the blwer shaft. Cupling halves must be fitted t the tw shafts with a line t line thru.001 interference fit. Cupling halves must be warmed up per cupling manufacturer s recmmendatins. Maximum deviatin in ffset alignment f the shafts shuld nt exceed.005 (.13 mm) ttal indicatr reading, taken n the tw cupling hubs. Maximum deviatin frm parallel f the inside cupling faces shuld nt exceed.001 (.03 mm) when checked at six pints arund the cupling. When a unit is BELT DRIVEN, the prper selectin f sheave diameters will result in the required unit speed. When selecting a sheave t be fitted t the blwer shaft Rts recmmends a taper lck style sheave t ensure prper cntact with the blwer shaft. This flexibility can lead t perating temperature prblems caused by unit speed being t lw. Make sure the drive speed selected is within the allwable range fr the specific unit size, as specified under Table 1, page 13. Belt drive arrangements shuld emply tw r mre V-belts running in grved sheaves. Installatin f the driver is less critical than fr direct cupling, but its shaft must be level and parallel with the unit shaft. The driver shuld be munted n the inlet side f a vertical unit (hrizntal piping) and n the side nearest t the shaft n a hrizntal unit. The driver must als be munted n an adjustable base t permit installing, adjusting and remving the V-belts. T psitin the driver crrectly, bth sheaves need t be munted n their shafts and the nminal shaft center distance knwn fr the belt lengths t be used. CAUTION: Drive cuplings and sheaves (pulleys) shuld have an interference fit t the shaft f the blwer (set screw types f attachment generally d nt prvide reliable service.) It is recmmended that the drive cupling r sheave used have a taper lck style bushing which is prperly sized t prvide the crrect interference fit required. Drive cuplings, that require heating t fit n the blwer shaft, shuld be installed per cupling manufacturer recmmendatins. A drive cupling r sheave shuld nt be frced n t the shaft f the blwer as this culd affect internal clearances resulting in damage t the blwer. Engine drive applicatins ften require special cnsideratin t drive cupling selectin t avid harmful trsinal vibratins. These vibratins may lead t blwer damage if nt dampened adequately. It is ften necessary t install a fly-wheel and/r a trsinally sft elastic element cupling based n the Engine manufacturer recmmendatins. The driver sheave shuld als be munted as clse t its bearing as pssible, and again shuld fit the shaft crrectly. Psitin the driver n its adjustable base s that 2/3 f the ttal mvement is available in the directin away frm the unit, and munt the assembly s that the face f the sheave is accurately in line with the unit sheave. This psitin minimizes belt wear, and allws sufficient adjustment fr bth installing and tightening the belts. After belts are installed, adjust their tensin in accrdance with the manufacturer s instructins. Hwever, nly enugh tensin shuld be applied t prevent slippage when the unit is perating under lad. Excessive tightening can lead t early bearing cncerns r shaft breakage. Befre perating the drive under pwer t check initial belt tensin, first remve cvers frm the unit cnnectins. Make sure the interir is still clean, then rtate the shaft by hand. Place a carse screen ver the inlet cnnectin t prevent anything being drawn int the unit while it is perating, and avid standing in line with the discharge pening. Put il in the sumps per instructins under LUBRICATION. 6 ISRB-2001 GEA20258 rev._04_16

Acceptable Blwer Drive Arrangement Optins ACCEPTABLE UNACCEPTABLE Tp Shaft Tp Shaft DISCHARGE INLET DISCHARGE INLET Mtr n Inlet Side f Blwer (Tp Shaft) Mtr n Discharge Side f Blwer (Tp Shaft) DISCHARGE INLET DISCHARGE INLET Bttm Shaft Mtr n Inlet Side f Blwer (Bttm Shaft) Bttm Shaft Mtr n Discharge Side f Blwer (Bttm Shaft) Piping Befre cnnecting piping, remve any remaining anti-rust cmpund frm Unit cnnectins. Clean pipe shuld be n smaller than unit cnnectins. In additin, make sure it is free f scale, cuttings, weld beads, r freign material f any kind. T further guard against damage t the unit, especially when an inlet filter is nt used, install a substantial screen f 16 mesh backed with hardware clth at r near the inlet cnnectins. Make prvisins t clean this screen f cllected debris after a few hurs f peratin. It shuld be remved when its usefulness has ended, as the wire will eventually deterirate and small pieces ging int the unit may cause serius damage. Pipe flanges r male threads must meet the unit cnnectins accurately and squarely. DO NOT attempt t crrect misalignment by springing r cramping the pipe. In mst cases this will distrt the unit casing and cause impeller rubbing. In severe cases it can prevent peratin r result in a brken drive shaft. Fr similar reasns, piping shuld be supprted near the unit t eliminate dead weight strains. Als, if pipe expansin is likely t ccur frm temperature change, installatin f flexible cnnectrs r expansin jints is advisable. Figure 3, page 11 represents an installatin with all accessry items that might be required under varius perating cnditins. Inlet piping shuld be cmpletely free f valves r ther restrictins. When a shut-ff valve can nt be avided, make sure a full size vacuum relief is installed nearest the unit inlet. This will help prtect against unit verlad caused by accidental clsing f the shut-ff valve. Need fr an inlet silencer will depend n unit speed and pressure, as well as sund-level requirements in the general surrundings. An inlet filter is recmmended, especially in dusty r sandy lcatins. A discharge silencer is als nrmally suggested, even thugh WHISPAIR units perate at generally lwer nise levels than cnventinal rtary blwers. Specific recmmendatins n silencing can be btained frm yur lcal Rts distributr. Discharge piping requires a pressure relief valve, and shuld include a manual unlading valve t permit starting the unit under n-lad cnditins. Reliable pressure/vacuum gauges and gd thermmeters at bth inlet and discharge are recmmended t allw making the imprtant checks n unit perating cnditins. The back-pressure regulatr shwn in Figure 3, page 11 is useful mainly when vlume demands vary while the unit perates at cnstant utput. If demand is cnstant, but smewhat lwer than the unit utput, excess may be blwn ff thrugh the manual unlading valve. In multiple unit installatins where tw r mre units perate with a cmmn header, use f check valves is mandatry. These shuld be f a direct acting r free swinging type, with ne valve lcated in each line between the unit and header. Prperly installed, they will prtect against damage frm reverse rtatin caused by air and material backflw thrugh an idle unit. After piping is cmpleted, and befre applying pwer, rtate the drive shaft by hand again. If it des nt mve with unifrm freedm, lk fr uneven munting, piping strain, excessive belt tensin r cupling misalignment. DO NOT perate the unit at this time unless it has been lubricated per instructins. ISRB-2001 GEA20258 rev._04_16 7

Lubricatin Due t sludge build-up and seal leakage prblems, Rts recmmendatin is DO NOT USE Mbil SHC synthetic ils in Rts blwers. LUBRICATION: Fr Units with Splash Lubricatin n Bth Ends. The specified and recmmended il is Rts Synthetic il f crrect viscsity per Table 2, page 13. The prper il level shuld be half way r middle f the sight gauge when the blwer is nt perating. DO NOT OVERFILL OIL SUMP/S as damage t the blwer may ccur. Oil level may rise r fall in the gauge during peratin t an extent depending smewhat n il temperature and blwer speed. It is recmmended that the il be changed after initial 100 hurs f peratin. Prper service intervals f the il thereafter are based n the discharge air temperature f the blwer. Please refer t the infrmatin belw t prperly determine the il service intervals. If yu chse t use anther il ther than the specified and recmmended Rts Synthetic, use a gd grade f industrial type nn-detergent, rust inhibiting, anti-faming il and f crrect viscsity per Table 2, page 13. Rts des NOT recmmend the use f autmtive type lubricants, as they are nt frmulated with the prperties mentined abve. Nrmal life expectancy f the specified and recmmended Rts Synthetic il is apprximately 6000 hurs with an il temperature f 180 F (82 C) r less. As the il temperature increases by increments f 15 F (8 C), the il life is reduced by half fr each 15 F (8 C) increase. Example: Oil temperatures f 195 F (90.5 C) will prduce a life expectancy reduced by half r 3000 hurs il service life. Nrmal life expectancy f petrleum based ils is abut 2000 hurs with an il temperature f abut 180 F (82 C). As the il temperature increases by increments f 15 F (8 C), the life is reduced by half fr each 15 F (8 C) increase. Example: Oil temperatures f 195 F (90.5 C) will prduce life expectancy reduced by half r 1000 hurs il service life. NOTE: T estimate il temperature, multiply the discharge temperature f the blwer by Example: if the discharge air temperature f the blwer is 200 F, it is estimated that the il temperature is 160 F. Bearings and il seals are lubricated by the actin f the timing gears r il slingers which dip int the main il sumps causing il t splash directly n gears and int bearings and seals. A drain prt is prvided belw each bearing t prevent an excessive amunt f il in the bearings. Seals lcated inbard f the bearings in each headplate effectively retain il within the sumps. Any small leakage that may ccur shuld the seals wear passes int a cavity in each vented headplate and is drained dwnward. Oil sumps n each end f the blwer are filled by remving tp vent plugs, Item (21), and filling until il reaches the middle f the il level sight gauge, Item (37). Initial filling f the sumps shuld be accmplished with the blwer nt perating, in rder t btain the crrect il level. Apprximate il quantities required fr blwers f the varius mdels and cnfiguratins are listed in Table 3, page 13. The il level shuld nt fall belw the middle f the site gauge when the blwer is idle. Prper lubricatin is usually the mst imprtant single cnsideratin in btaining maximum service life and satisfactry peratin frm the unit. Unless perating cnditins are severe, a weekly check f il level and necessary additin f lubricant shuld be sufficient. During the first week f peratin, check the il levels in the il sumps abut nce a day, and watch fr leaks. Replenish as necessary. Thereafter, an ccasinal check shuld be sufficient. Mre frequent il service may be necessary if the blwer is perated in a very dusty lcatin. Rts Synthetic il is superir in perfrmance t petrleum based prducts. It has high xidatin stability, excellent crrsin prtectin, extremely high film strength and lw cefficient f frictin. Typical il change intervals are increased 2-3 times ver petrleum based lubricants. Als, Rts Synthetic il is 100% cmpatible with petrleum based ils. Simply drain the il in the blwer and refill the reservirs with Rts Synthetic il t maintain ptimum perfrmance f yur Rts blwer. 8 ISRB-2001 GEA20258 rev._04_16

Operatin Befre perating a blwer under pwer fr the first time, recheck the unit and the installatin thrughly t reduce the likelihd f avidable trubles. Use the fllwing prcedure check list as a guide, but cnsider any ther special cnditins in the installatin. Be certain that n blts, tls, rags, r debris have been left in the blwer air chamber r piping. If an utdr intake withut filter is used, be sure the pening is lcated s it cannt pick up dirt and is prtected by a strng screen r grille. Use f the temprary prtective screen as described under INSTALLATION is strngly recmmended. Recheck blwer leveling, drive alignment and tightness f all munting blts if installatin is nt recent. If belt drive is used, adjust belt tensin crrectly. Turn drive shaft by hand t make sure impellers still rtate withut bumping r rubbing at any pint. Ensure il levels in the main il sumps are crrect. Check lubricatin f driver. If it is an electric mtr, be sure that pwer is available and that electrical verlad devices are installed and wrkable. Open the manual unlading valve in the discharge air line. If a valve is in the inlet piping, be sure it is pen. Bump blwer a few revlutins with driver t check that directin f rtatin agrees with arrw near blwer shaft, and that bth cast freely t a stp. After the preceding pints are cleared, blwer is ready fr trial peratin under n-lad cnditins. The fllwing prcedure is suggested t cver this initial peratin test perid. a. Start blwer, let it accelerate t full speed, then shut ff. Listen fr kncking sunds, bth with pwer n and as speed slws dwn. b. After blwer cmes t a cmplete stp, repeat abve, but let blwer run 2 r 3 minutes. Check fr nises, such as kncking sunds. c. After blwer cmes t a cmplete stp, perate blwer fr abut 10 minutes unladed. Check il levels. Observe cylinder and headplate surfaces fr develpment f ht spts such as burned paint, indicating impeller rubs. Be aware f any nticeable increase in vibratin. Assuming that all trials have been satisfactry, r that necessary crrectins have been made, the blwer shuld nw have a final check run f at least ne hur under nrmal perating cnditins. After blwer is restarted, gradually clse the discharge unlading valve t apply wrking pressure. At this pint it is recmmended that a pressure gauge r manmeter be cnnected int the discharge line if nt already prvided, and that thermmeters be in bth inlet and discharge lines. Readings frm these instruments will shw whether pressure r temperature ratings f the blwer are being exceeded. During the final run, check perating cnditins frequently and bserve the il levels at reasnable intervals. If excessive nise r lcal heating develps, shut dwn immediately and determine the cause. If either pressure rise r temperature rise acrss the blwer exceeds the limit specified in this manual, shut dwn and investigate cnditins in the piping system. Refer t the TROUBLESHOOTING CHECKLIST fr suggestins n varius prblems that may appear. The blwer shuld nw be ready fr cntinuus duty peratin at full lad. During the first few days make peridic checks t determine whether all cnditins remain steady, r at least acceptable. This may be particularly imprtant if the blwer is supplying air t a prcess system where cnditins can vary. At the first pprtunity, stp the blwer and clean the temprary inlet prtective screen. If n appreciable amunt f debris has cllected, the screen may be remved. See cmments under INSTALLATION. At this same time, verify leveling, cupling alignment r belt tensin, and munting blt tightness. Shuld perating experience prve that blwer capacity is a little t high fr the actual air requirements, a small excess may be blwn ff cntinuusly thrugh the manual unlading r vent valve. Never rely n the pressure relief valve as an autmatic vent. Such use may cause the discharge pressure t becme excessive, and can als result in unsafe peratin f the valve itself. If blwer capacity appears t be t lw, refer t the TROUBLESHOOTING CHECKLIST. Vibratin Assessment Criteria With measurements taken at the bearing lcatins n the husings, see chart belw fr an apprpriate assessment guide fr rtary lbe blwers rigidly munted n stiff fundatins. In general, blwer vibratin levels shuld be mnitred n a regular basis and the vibratin trend bserved fr prgressive r sudden change in level. If such a change ccurs, the cause shuld be determined thrugh spectral analysis. 11 Inspectin & Maintenance: RAM and RAM-J Series Blwers A gd prgram f cnsistent inspectin and maintenance is the mst reliable methd f minimizing repairs t a blwer. A simple recrd f services and dates will help keep this wrk n a regular schedule. Basic service needs are: Lubricatin Checking fr ht spts Checking fr increases r changes in vibratin and nise Recrding f perating pressures and temperatures Abve all, a blwer must be perated within its specified rating limits, t btain satisfactry service life. A newly installed blwer shuld be checked ften during the first mnth f full-time peratin. Attentin thereafter may be less frequent assuming satisfactry perfrmance. Lubricatin is nrmally the mst imprtant cnsideratin and weekly checks f lubricant levels in the gearbx and bearing reservirs shuld be custmary. Cmplete il change schedules are discussed under LUBRICATION. Driver lubricatin practices shuld be in accrdance with the manufacturer s instructins. If direct cnnected t the blwer thrugh a lubricated type cupling, the cupling shuld be checked and greased each time blwer il is changed. This will help reduce wear and prevent unnecessary vibratin. In a belted drive system, check belt tensin peridically and inspect fr frayed r cracked belts. In a new, and prperly installed, unit there is n cntact between the tw impellers, r between the impellers and cylinder r headplates. Wear is cnfined t the bearings (which supprt and lcate the shafts) the il seals, and the timing gears. All are lubricated and wear shuld be minimal if clean il f the crrect grade is always used. Seals are subject t deteriratin and wear, and may require replacement at varying perids. Pistn ring seals (28) are designed t perate withut rubbing cntact, nce temperature and thermal grwth have stabilized. The statinary rings will rub the rtating sleeve (38) briefly as a result f temperature cycles that ccur during the startup and shutdwn f the unit. The sleeves are hardened and the rings are cated with dry lubricant that prvides fr temprary break in wear. Replace pistn ring seals if they becme excessively wrn. Shaft bearings are designed fr ptimum life under average cnditins with prper lubricatin and are critical t the service life f the blwer. Gradual bearing wear may allw a shaft psitin t change slightly, until rubbing develps between impeller and casing. This will cause spt heating, which can be detected by bserving these surfaces. Sudden bearing situatins is usually mre serius. Since the shaft and impeller are n lnger supprted and prperly lcated, extensive general damage t the blwer casing and gears is likely t ccur. Oil seals shuld be cnsidered expendable items, t be replaced whenever drainage frm the headplate vent cavity becmes excessive r when the blwer is disassembled fr any reasn. Sme il seal leakage may ccur since an il film under the lip is required fr prper peratin. Peridically leaked il shuld be wiped ff frm surfaces. Minr seal leakage shuld nt be cnsidered as indicating seal replacement. Timing gear wear, when crrect lubricatin is maintained, shuld be negligible. Gear teeth are cut t prvide the crrect amunt f backlash, and gears crrectly munted n the shafts will accmmdate a nrmal amunt f tth wear withut permitting cntact between lbes f the tw impellers. Hwever, t high an il level will cause churning and excessive heating. This is indicated by unusually high temperature at the bttm f the gear husing. Cnsequent heating f the gears will result in lss f tth-clearance, backlash and rapid wear f the gear teeth usually will develp. Cntinuatin f this tth wear will eventually prduce impeller cntacts (kncking), and frm this pint serius damage will be unavidable if blwer peratin is cntinued. A similar situatin can be prduced suddenly by gear tth fracture, which is usually brught n by sustained verlading r mmentary shck lads. Prblems may als develp frm causes ther than internal parts damage. Operating clearances within a blwer are nly a few thusandths f an inch. This makes it pssible fr impeller interferences r casing rubs t result frm shifts in the blwer munting, r frm changes in piping supprt. If this type f truble is experienced, and the blwer is fund t be clean, try remving munting strains. Lsen blwer munting blts and reset the leveling and drive alignment. Then tighten munting again, and make sure that all piping meets blwer cnnectins accurately and squarely Freign materials sucked int the blwer will als cause truble, which can nly be cured by discnnecting the piping and thrughly cleaning the blwer interir. A wide range f causes and slutins fr perating trubles are cvered in the TROUBLE SHOOTING CHECKLIST. The remedies suggested shuld be perfrmed by qualified mechanics with a gd backgrund. Majr repairs generally are t be cnsidered beynd the scpe f maintenance, and shuld be referred t yur authrized Rts distributr. Warranty situatins shuld nt be repaired at all, unless specific apprval has been btained thrugh a Sales Office r the factry befre starting wrk. Unauthrized disassembly within the warranty perid may vid the warranty. ISRB-2001 GEA20258 rev._04_16 11
