6 HOlSET 3lD TURBOCHARGER DESCRIPTION... 1 TURBOCHARGER REMOVAL/INSPECTION... 3 TURBOCHARGER LUBRICATION... 1 TURBOCHARGER REBUILDING INSTRUCTIONS... 3 IMPORTANT INFORMATION AND PRECAUTIONS... 1 TURBOCHARGER INSTALLATION CHECK LIST... 6 TROUBLE-SHOOTING... 2 RUN-IN INSTRUCTIONS FOR A CHECKING BOOST PRESSURE... 2 NEW OR REBUILT TURBOCHARGER... 6 Description The 3LD Turbocharger, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is a self-contained unit. and consists of a gas turbine and a centrifugal compressor fitted to a common shaft with the necessary surrounding casings. The exhaust gas from the diesel engine is directed through manifolding to the turbine, which utilizes some of the energy in the exhaust gas to drive the compressor. The air required by the engine is supplied at a pressure above atmospheric through the conventional air intake manifold, and enables a higher output to be obtained from the engine. No control over the turbocharger is necessary as the speed and output vary automatically with changes in load and speed of the engine. Turbocharger Lubrication The turbocharger bearing is lubricated with oil taken from the engine lubricating oil system. The oil is piped to the top of the center bearing housing and through a drilling in the casing to the bearing. The bottom end of the oil feed pipe is attached to the cylinder block, at the opposite end of the cross-drilling to which the engine lubricating oil filter is located. Fig. 1 - Important Information and Precautions Right-Hand View of Typical 3LD Turbocharger Installation The oil return flow is by a drain pipe attached to the tappet inspection cover. A MAJOR CAUSE OF TURBOCHARGER FAIL URE IS A LACK OF SUFFICIENT LUBRICA TION TO THE TURBO BEARING AT ENGINE START UP. THIS CONDITION IS AMPLIFIED IF THE ENGINE HAS BEEN IDLE FOR EXTENDED PERIODS. THE DAMAG ING EFFECTS OF THIS "OIL LAG" CAN BE PREVENTED BY CRANKING THE ENGINE FOR SEVERAL SHORT BURSTS PRIOR TO TURNING THE FUEL "ON" AND ALLOWING THE ENGINE TO START. IN EITHER IN STANCE, THE ENGINE SHOULD IDLE FOR SEVERAL MINUTES AFTER STARTING. CLOSE ADHERENCE TO ESTABLISHED MAIN TENANCE SCHEDULES REGARDING LUBE OIL AND/OR FILTER CHANGES IS NECES SARYTOASSURETHENORMALENDURANCE LIFE OF TURBOCHARGER BEARINGS. 1. Emphasize to customers that they start and operate the turbocharged engine in accordance with the recommendations in the appropriate Operator's Manual. See machine Operator's Manual and previous heading "Turbocharger Lubrication" for important information. 2.0il Pressure - Lubricating oil pressure should be 30 psi minimum at normal engine working speeds. 3.0il Temperature - As the turbocharger has been designed to operate satisfactorily when lubricated within the normal range of engine oil temperature, no additional gauge is necessary. Fig. 2 - Left-Hand View of Typical 3LD Turbocharger Installation 4. The boost pressure should be checked yearly or approximately every 750 hours of operation. See later heading for procedure.

9 PART 5 - MULTI-POWER TRANSMISSION DESCRIPTION SPECIAL TOOLS SERVICE INFORMATION SPLITTING TRACTOR BETWEEN ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION... Refer to Part 4 - CONNECTING ENGINE TO TRANSMISSION... Refer to Part 4 - Clutch Clutch REMOVING/INSTALLING TRANSMISSION... DISASSEMBLY OF TRANSMISSION... 2 INSPECTION AND REASSEMBLY OF TRANSMiSSiON... 3 SERVICING MULTI-POWER CLUTCH AND INPUT SHAFT... 5 DESCRIPTION This transmission allows a selection of 12 forward and 4 reverse speed changes. The sliding gears provide 3 forward and 1 reverse speed selections... the Multi-Power clutch pack allows this selection to change to 6 forward and 2 reverse... and a high-low gear set doubles this selection to 12 forward and 4 reverse speeds. Transmission sliding gear selections are made by moving shift rails in the transmission case. The Multi-Power unit consists of a multipledisc hydraulic clutch located on the transmission input shaft. This clutch is engaged by oil pressure from the low pressure circuit of the hydraulic system. A hydraulic control valve (operated by a lever on the instrument panel) controls the oil flow to the clutch pack. When oil is allowed to flow to the clutch, the clutch discs engage and connect the input shaft to the large input gear and the transmission is in "High" Multi-Power. Shutting off the oil supply allows the clutch pack to disengage and a jaw-type overrunning clutch engages the smaller input gear and the transmission is in "Low" Multi Power. The high-low gear set is located in the center housing and connects the transmission output shaft to the differential drive pinion shaft. The high-low shifting mechanism is located directly below the cluster gear on the pinion shaft. The high and low gears turn freely on the pinion shaft and are in constant mesh with the cluster gear. The shift collar hub is splined to the pinion shaft. Moving the shift collar forward connects the large gear to the pinion shaft (Low Range). Moving the shift collar rearward connects the small gear to the pinion shaft (High Range). The High-Low range shift rail has a detent in. high and low positions (there is no neutral position). SPECIAL TOOLS All special tools are used in compiling the "Repair Time Schedule". The following special tools are listed and defined for your convenience. MFN 800 HH - Input Shaft Tube and Seal Remover MFN 800 GG - Input Shaft Retainer Seal Installer MFN 800 K - Reverse Idler Needle Bearing Installer MFN 800 M - Needle Bearing Installer MFN 800 L - Needle Bearing Installer MFN 800 MM - Pilot Drawbar Assembly (consists of MFN 800 A, A 1, B, Rand S) MFN 800 P - Needle Bearing Installer MFN 800 Q - Needle Bearing Installer MFN 800 KK - Driver MFN 800 V - Draw Rod Adapter MFN 800 FF - Draw Rod SERVICE INFORMATION Most of the service procedures pertaining to the transmission will require complete removal of the unit from the Tractor. However, if only the input shaft and Multi-Power clutch pack require servicing, the complete assembly can be removed by splitting between engine and transmission. REMOVING/ INSTALLING THE TRANSMISSION 1. To remove the transmission from the Tractor, split between engine and transmission as instructed in Part 4 - Clutch... then refer to instructions for removal/installation of transmission in Part 6 - "8- Speed Transmission". These procedures are OUTLINED AS FOLLOWS: a. Remove the operator's platf~rm... or tilt cab rearward. b. Disconnect shift linkage, clutch pedal linkage and batteries. c. Disconnect brake lines from master cylinder. d. Remove hydraulic line between priority valve and transfer cap. e. Remove fuel supply line and disconnect PTO line (at right side of case). f. Disconnect line from transmission top cover and lines from front cover assembly (on center housing). g. Disconnect light wires and place out of way. h. Remove instrument console as shown in Fig. 1. i. Drain and remove fuel tanks. j. Drain transmission and center housing (approx. 17 gals. U.S.). k. Place a stand under front of center housing. Then block up under drawbar (at rear) to prevent the center housing and axle from tipping backward when the transmission is removed. Attach a suitable hoist to top of transmission... then remove the retaining bolts and separate transmission from center housing. 2.
