4 24 Operation Crowd Digging Use crowd digging for: -Digging a trench. -Better digging conditions than for bucket digging. Lifting With The Backhoe h CAUTION: Do not install transport locking.. pins for lifting loads. Use following procedure to lift maximum loads: T Fasten chain to dipperstick. Be sure all chains are fastened tightly. U Lower bucket to ground to same position as in bucket digging. 2. Use only the crowd cylinder to retract the dipperstick. 3. Drag the bucket through the trench until it is half full. 4. Then roll the bucket while retracting dipperstick until bucket is full. Dumping Raise, swing, and dump bucket in one smooth operation. Keep edge of spoil pile two feet (610 mm) away from trench. When you load a truck with high sides, roll the bucket as you raised it. When you operate on a hillside, if possible, dump spoil on the uphill side. Backfilling Do not use side of bucket to backfill. T ''''''-- T Retract boom cylinder to raise boom to full height. ]68043 T If necessary, extend crowd cylinder. Then retract crowd cylinder to lift load.

5 60 Service Checking Specific Gravity A fully charged battery will have a corrected specific gravity reading of Charge battery if reading falls below or half charge. NOTE: In tropical areas, use a full charge reading. In cold regions, use a full charge reading. ALTERNATOR AND REGULATOR STARTER IMPORTANT: Do not hold down starter button longer than 20 seconds at a time. If the engine does not start within 20 seconds, wait two minutes before pushing starter button again. After a false start, do not push starter button until engine has stopped turning. Precautions For Alternator and Regulator When batteries are connected, follow these rules: 1. Disconnect negative ground strap when working on or near alternator or regulator. 2. If alternator or regulator wiring is disconnected, connect wiring before batteries are connected. 3. NEVER ground alternator field terminal or field circuit between alternator or regulator. 4. NEVER ground alternator output terminal. 5. NEVER disconnect or connect alternator or regulator wires with batteries connected or alternator operating. 6. Connect battery or booster battery in correct polarity. 7. NEVER disconnect batteries when engine is running or alternator is charging. Checking Causes of Sluggish Starter Operation T4~317Y If the starter will not operate or operates sluggishly, check for the following: 1. Run down battery. 2. Dirty, loose, or corroded cables and wires. 3. Engine oil viscosity too heavy. If the above checks do not help you improve the operation of starter, see your John Deere dealer.
