7 3-06 OPERATION Caution: If the four wheel drive fails to engage or disengage, stop the tractor by pressing the clutch pedal down, then operate the control rod as required. Caution: DO NOT operate the tractor in four wheel drive while on the road, as this will lead to: 1. Premature front tyre wear. 2. Excessive fuel consumption. Autolock differential. The Autolock differential is completely automatic in operation, keeping the half-shafts locked together when driving in a straight line and disengaging the outside wheel when the tractor is steered to the right or left. On returning to a straight course, the Autolock automatically re-engages. Note: The Autolock is usually silent in operation, but can occasionally emit a metallic 'click' as reengagement takes place. Hydralock differential The Hydralock differential is automatic in operation being controlled electro-hydraulically on engagement of the rear differential lock, or the switch on the instrument panel. Brakes Warning: Always latch the brake pedals together before driving on the road. Differential lock If a rear wheel starts to slip: 1. Engage the differential lock, press the pedal down, the pedal will automatically latch in the engaged position. 2. To disengage the differential lock, press down on the pedal then lift the foot. This action will release the latch and allow the pedal to return to the disengaged position. Caution: Do not attempt to engage the differential lock with one wheel stopped and the other wheel spinning fast. Declutch before engaging the differential lock. Do not attempt to turn with the differential lock engaged. Note: If the differential lock fails to disengage, steer SLIGHTLY to either left or right, or lightly engage the independent brake. Warning: When the tractor is being operated for stationary work, even if only for short periods, always engage the parking brake. Warning: The independent brakes may be used to assist turning when travelling very slowly. Never apply one brake when travelling at speed. Trailer brakes (Fig. 6) To operate the trailer brakes, connect the trailer brake hose to the coupler at the rear of the tractor and latch the brake pedals together. The trailer brakes will then operate together with the tractor brakes. If adjustment is necessary, turn the adjuster nut (1 Fig. 55 or 56) on the left hand rear axle brake actuating lever clockwise to reduce pedal movement and anti-clockwise to increase pedal movement. 5. Having adjusted the left hand pedal, adjust the right hand pedal as in procedures 3 and 4 above. Check that the pedal latch engages. 6. Road test the tractor, and check the brakes for binding or pulling to one side. Any tendency to pull to one side should be counteracted by slackening off the adjuster nut on the side to which the tractor pulls. 7. Finally, with the parking brake released, take up any slack in the brake cable by turning the adjuster nuts (2) Warning: If, after the full adjustment procedure, brake operation is unsatisfactory, or there is a leakage of fluid from the system, notify your Massey-Ferguson Dealer immediately for investigation and rectification. Differential lock (Fig. 57) Check the differential lock every 500 hours. 1. The tyre pressures listed are maxima and can be used in safety, at all times, without danger of sidewall rippling. In certain conditions the pressures may be lowered, particularly where the loads are light resulting in the tyre treads failing to self clean. If the tyre pressures are reduced, have someone observe the tractor whilst working. Rippling of the sidewalls can cause rapid and severe tyre damage. 2. Keep oil, grease and strong alkaline or acid fertilisers away from tyres to prevent deterioration of the rubber. 3. Have any small sidewall or tread splits or cuts revulcanised as soon after they occur as possible. This extends the life of the tyre. 4. If bolt-on weights are fitted, raise the pressures to suit the weight fitted, consult your Massey-Ferguson Dealer. 5. Always drive slowly 20 Km/h (12 mile/hr) on the road if the tyre pressures have been lowered for ploughing. 6. For maximum efficiency if ploughing with crossply tyres, never use tyres more than a third to half worn. Tyre pressures and water ballasting details are quoted below in tables 4-5 to 4-8 for a few of the many tyre options available for these tractors. These figures are given as a guide only. For specific details for your tractor if not shown below, or if you wish to change the tyre sizes, see your Massey Feguson Dealer who will have full tyre range specifications and recommended pressures supplied by the tyre manufacturers. Fig Disengage the differential lock by pressing the pedal down releasing the latch and allowing the pedal to come up. 2. Turn back the rubber seal to gain access to the locknut. 3. Set the gap (Fig. 57) between the screw and the end of the actuator to 1 mm. (0.040 in) Tyres (Fig. 58) Fig. 58 TL1052 Warning: Tyre tread and ply rating or load index must match. Do not fit a radial one side and a crossply on the other. Check that the tyre pressures are correct for the particular operation to be performed. These simple rules, if followed carefully, will ensure maximum tyre life. Check tyre pressure every 100 hours. Check and adjust the front and rear tyre pressure and inspect the tread and side walls for damage (Fig. 58). Note: The tyre pressures given in tables 4-5 to 4-7 are the maximum for radial tyres up to a road speed of 30 Km/h (20 mile/hr).
