4 10 General 25~4 Separation Tractor ~ 2020 TM~1044 (Feb-71) j nstall J lifting eyes on engine. Using an overhead hoist, attach J DG-1 engine lift sling to J lifting eyes to support engine (Fig. 12). Remove the six engine-to-front support cap screws. Fig. 10-Right-Hand Removal Procedure 1. Disconnect and remove the power steering pressure pipe (Fig. 10). Fig. 9-Tractor Front End Separated From Engine Carefully separate tractor front end by rolling rear section away from front end (Fig. 9). Place a metal stand under clutch housing (Fig. 12). Install caplugs. ASSEMBLY IMPORTANT: Be sure hydraulic pump check valve (tractors without Hi~lo 01' reverser) is installed in the pump inlet pipe before joining sections. Remove caplugs. 2. Disconnect battery cable from starter solenoid. 3. Disconnect the wiring from the oil pressure switch, starter solenoid, coil, and alternator. Remove wiring harness band from fuel pipe. 4. Disconnect tachometer drive from flywheel housing and disconnect ether starting aid pipe. 5. Remove hydraulic reservoir vent hose from support clamp. Remove cowl-to-flywheel housing cap screws. Join sections. Tighten bolts and cap screws to specified torque. Remove JDG-1 lift sling, and JD-244 lifting eyes. Reverse the numbered removal steps. When installing radiator, tighten radiator mounting cap screws until head of cap screw is flush with bottom of front support. I nstall battery, side grille screens, hood, muffler, and front ballast (if used). Fill cooling system. Start engine and check operation. For specific fuel system components, refer to the groups which cover complete servicing. Fuel Not Reaching Injection Pump or Carburetor Filters clogged. Fuel line clogged or restricted. Electrical shut-off does not work. Fuel too heavy at low temperatures (diesel). Engine Starts Hard or Won't Start Air leak on suction side of system. Fuel too heavy at low temperatures (diesel). Diesel injection nozzles faulty or sticking. I ncorrect tim ing. Diesel automatic advance is faulty or not operating. Water in fuel. Filters clogged. I njection pump return fuel line or fittings restricted (diesel). Low octane or low cetane fuel. Injection pump out of time. Engine Starts and Stops Electrical shut-off does not work. 7 TM-1044 (Apr-75) Repair Pump No attempt should be made to disassemble, inspect, and repair internal parts of the injection pump unless required. Special test equipment is available for performing such service. For detailed information on servicing the fuel injection pump, refer to John Deere Injection Pump Service Manual (SM-2045). Drive Shaft and Gear Fuel Systems 30 Diesel Fuel System 10-3 seals MUST face in opposite directions to separate external lubricants from fuel in the pump. Apply Lubriplate liberally around the shaft between the two seals. I nstall gear on drive shaft using key and keyway to locate gear on shaft. Tighten hex. nut to specified torque. InstaUation and Timing I nstall injection pump drive gear and shaft (if removed) on engine front plate. Refer to Section 20, Group 25 for proper method of timing injection pump drive gear. With timing window in place on injection pump, check to be sure that timing line on governor weight retainer hub registers with the line on the cam..305"min. ~ R Fig. 5-lnternal End of Drive Shaft 3568 Examine the tang on the drive shaft (Fig. 5). The thickness of the tang should not be less than specified. Check seals on shaft for hardness or cracked condition. Examine seal grooves on shaft for smooth finish. Any roughness at these points will cause seal failures. If engine has not been set on "top dead center" (No.1 cylinder on compression stroke) rotate engine in direction of rotation (counterclockwise as viewed from flywheel end) until No.1 cylinder is on compression stroke. See details under "Removing Injection Pump from Drive Shaft." I nstall pump over shaft. Be sure that reference mark on drive shaft tang is aligned with the reference mark on the slot end of the distributor rotor in the pump. IMPORTANT: incoi'i'eh~t assembly of shan into pump will result il1 timing error of H~Oo. The

11 TM-1044 (Feb-71) Miscellaneous 80 Front Axle 5-1 Section 80 MISCELLANEOUS GROUP 5 - FRONT AXLE General Information Removal Repair Installation Specifications Torques for Hardware Special Tools Group 5 FRONT AXLE GENERAL INFORMATION The front axle assembly consists of the front axle, knee assembly, spindle and knuckle assembly, steering arms, steering bellcrank, and tie rods. The complete assembly pivots on the front and rear pivot pins, which are fastened to the front end support. Remove the front axle assembly if new pivot pins or bushings are to be installed. Remove the cotter pin and slotted' nut (Fig. 1) from the axle mounting bolt. Disconnect the drag link from the steering bellcrank. Place a metal stand or floor jack under the axle assembly to support the axle during removal. REMOVAL Fig. 2-Removing Front Axle Assembly Fig. 1-Removal Procedure Install a JDG-3 lift bracket (Fig. 2), and raise the front end of tractor just enough to remove the weight from the axle assembly.
