1 of 9 GM Century/Lumina/Grand Prix/Intrigue Power Steering Pump REMOVAL & INSTALLATION BLEEDING When servicing the power steering pump, inspect the power steering fluid. Look for foaming, milky power steering fluid, low fluid level and leaks in the hoses and lines. If the fluid has a foamy or milky appearance, it could be caused by air in the fluid and loss of fluid due to internal pump leakage causing overflow. Extremely low temperatures will cause air bubbles in the system if the fluid level is low. If the fluid level is correct and the pump still foams, look for air entry (cracked housing, etc.). Your W-Body vehicle may be equipped with the MAGNASTEER system, a speed-dependent power steering system. The system provides power assist at varying levels depending on need. A bi-directional magnetic rotary actuator in the steering gear adjusts the amount of torque (driver effort) necessary to turn the steering wheel. The MAGNASTEER system is controlled through software in the Antilock Brake System (ABS) electronic control module or the Electronic Brake Traction Control Module (EBTCM) and varies the amount of torque by adjusting the current flow through the actuator. The amount of adjustment will be directly related to vehicle speed. The controller receives speed-related input signals from the vehicle speed sensor in the transaxle. GM recommends their Power Steering Fluid (pint) or (quart) or equivalent. A special cold weather fluid is available under part number (pint) and (quart). Please note that GM specifies that the system should be flushed and bled prior to switching fluid types. Power steering fluid level is indicated by marks on the fluid level indicator on the fluid reservoir cap. If the fluid is warmed up (about 150, hot to the touch), the fluid level should be between the HOT and COLD marks. If the fluid is cool (about 70 ), the fluid level should be between the ADD and COLD marks. 1L and 4L (VIN E) Engines

2 of 9 Fig. Power steering pump mounting-1l and 4L (VIN E) engines Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir and position it aside. Remove the serpentine drive belt from the power steering pump assembly. Detach the ignition control wiring harness near the pump assembly. Disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses from the pump assembly. Unfasten the pump retaining bolts/screws. Remove the pump assembly from the vehicle. Remove the power steering pump pulley from the pump assembly. Remove the reservoir assembly from the pump. To install: Attach the reservoir to the pump assembly. Install the pulley to the pump. Position the pump to the engine and secure with the retaining bolts/screws. Tighten the bolts/screws to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm). Connect the inlet and outlet hoses to the power steering pump. Attach the ignition control wiring harness at the pump assembly. Install the serpentine drive belt over the power steering pump pulley.

3 of Install the coolant recovery reservoir. Connect the negative battery cable. Fill and bleed the power steering system. 4L (VIN X) Engine Fig. Power steering pump mounting-4l (VIN X) engine Remove the air cleaner and duct assembly. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the coolant recovery tank. Remove the serpentine drive belt. NOTE Siphon the power steering fluid from the reservoir before disconnecting the lines to avoid spilling fluid on the secondary timing belt cover. Use shop rags when disconnecting the lines to ensure any remaining fluid does NOT contact the secondary timing belt cover. Power steering fluid can damage the timing belt. Siphon as much fluid as possible from the reservoir. Remove the power steering pump from the bracket. Disconnect the power steering lines. Plug the lines or drain the fluid into a container if changing fluid at this time.

4 of 9 If installing a new pump, transfer the pulley from the old pump to the new one. To install: Connect the power steering fluid lines. Position the power steering pump in the bracket and secure with the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm). Install the serpentine belt. Install the coolant recovery tank. Connect the negative battery cable. Install the air cleaner and duct assembly. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Check the system for leaks, road test and recheck the fluid level. 5L (VIN H) Engine Please note that the power steering pump pulley must be removed to access the pump retaining bolts. Special tools are required to draw the pulley off the pump shaft and to later press the pulley onto the pump shaft. A shop press cannot be used to install the pulley or the pump will be damaged. Place a drain pan under the vehicle. Remove the coolant surge tank (coolant reservoir). Remove the cosmetic/acoustic engine cover. Remove the accessory drive belt. Please see. Remove the accessory wiring junction block and set aside. Remove the power steering pump pulley from the pump noting the following: Use a power steering pump pulley remover. These pullers typically have a ridge that surrounds the collar on the pulley center. Turn the puller screw making sure the center screw is centered in the end of the pump shaft. Draw the pulley from the pump shaft.

5 of 9 Disconnect the pressure line and return hose from the power steering pump. Unfasten the pump retaining bolts and remove the pump from the engine. Fig. Power steering pump mounting and the pulley removal and installation tool-5l VIN H Engine To install: 1 1 Install the pump to the engine. Install the bolts and tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm). Connect the power steering return line. Connect the power steering pressure line. Using a "crows foot" adapter and a torque wrench, torque the pressure line fitting to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). Install the power steering pump pulley noting the following. Use a power steering pump pulley installer such as J 36015, or equivalent. This type of installer threads into the end of the pump shaft. A nut is then turned to press the pulley onto the pump shaft. The face of the pulley hub must be flush with the end of the pump shaft. WARNING Do not attempt to use a shop press to install a pump pulley. 1 Install the accessory wiring junction block.

6 of Install the accessory drive belt, making sure it is properly routed and seated in all pulley grooves. Install the coolant surge tank. Install the engine cover. Fill the power steering system and bleed the system. Check for leaks. 8L Engines Fig. Power steering pump mounting-8l engines Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir and bracket. Unfasten the ECM retaining nuts, then remove the cover. Remove the serpentine belt from the pulleys by loosening the automatic belt tensioner as outlined in of this guide. Disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses from the pump. Unfasten the pump mounting bolts, then remove the pump and reservoir. Using a suitable prybar, remove the retaining clips from the reservoir, then separate the reservoir from the pump. Remove the pump pulley using a power steering pump pulley removing tool J B or equivalent pulley pullers.

7 of 9 To install: Install the reservoir to the pump with a new O-ring seal and install the retaining clip. Make sure the tabs are fully engaged on the pump. Install the pulley to the power steering pump. Install the pump and retaining bolts. Tighten the retaining bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm). Connect the inlet and outlet hoses to the pump. Install the serpentine drive belt. Install the ECM cover and secure with the retaining nuts. Connect the negative battery cable. Fill and bleed the power steering system as outlined later in this information. Allow the engine to warm up, road test the vehicle and recheck the fluid level. Check the system for leaks, road test and recheck the fluid level. The power steering fluid replacement procedure is a two-stage process: first, flushing the old fluid from the system with new fluid and second, bleeding the system to remove any trapped air. The following sequences outline these procedures. Raise and safely support the front end of the vehicle off the ground until the front wheels are free to turn. Remove the fluid return line at the pump reservoir inlet connector. Plug the inlet connector port on the pump reservoir. Position the fluid return line toward a container (several quart capacity) to catch the draining fluid. When an assistant fills the reservoir with either the standard power steering fluid or optional cold weather power steering fluid, start and run the engine at idle. Turn the steering wheel from stop-to-stop.

8 of 9 WARNING Do not hold the steering wheel against the stops while flushing the system. Holding the steering wheel against the stops will cause high system pressure, overheating and damage to the pump and/or the steering gear assembly. Continue draining until all of the old fluid is cleared from the power steering system. The addition of another quart of fresh fluid will be required to flush the system. Turn the engine OFF. Unplug the pump reservoir inlet and reconnect the return line. Fill the reservoir to the FULL COLD mark. Fig. Power steering system bleeding After replacing the fluid or servicing the power steering hydraulic system, you must bleed air from the system. Air in the system prevents an accurate fluid level reading, causes pump cavitation noise and over time could damage the pump. To bleed the power steering system, proceed as follows. 1 1 Begin with the engine OFF, front wheels off the ground and the wheels turned all the way to the left. Add either standard power steering fluid or optional cold climate fluid to the FULL COLD mark on the fluid level indicator. With the engine still OFF, bleed the system by turning the wheels from stop-to-stop, but without hitting the stops. NOTE This may require turning the wheels from side to side up to 40 times. Keep the fluid level at the FULL COLD

9 of 9 12/12/ :40 AM mark. Fluid with air in it may have a light tan appearance. This air must be eliminated from the fluid before normal steering action can be obtained Start the engine. With the engine idling, recheck the fluid level. If necessary, add fluid to bring the level to the FULL COLD mark. Return the front wheels to the center position. Verify that the transaxle is in PARK and that the parking brake had been firmly set. Lower the front wheels to the ground. Continue running the engine for two or three minutes. Test drive the vehicle to be sure the power steering functions normally and is free from noise. NOTE Inspect for fluid leakage at the connection points along the power steering system. 1 Recheck the fluid level. The fluid level should now be up to the FULL HOT mark after the system has stabilized at operating temperature. Back to Top
