CAUTION Do not use a puller claw on crankshaft pulley periphery. 34. Remove the lower oil pan. 35. Loosen upper oil pan front bolts in the order illustrated. 36. Temporarily install lower oil pan. 37. Support front of engine under oil pan using a jack and wood block. 38. Remove the front timing chain case as follows: A. Loosen the front timing chain case bolts in the order illustrated. B. Insert the appropriate size tool such as J into the notch at the top of the front timing chain case as illustrated. 39. Pry off the case by moving the suitable tool back and forward. CAUTION Do not use a screwdriver or similar tool. NOTE After removal, handle the cover carefully so it does not bend, or warp under a load. 40. Remove the water pump cover and chain tensioner cover from the front timing chain case using Tool J CAUTION Do not insert a screwdriver, this will damage the mating surfaces. 41. Remove the front oil seal from the front timing chain case using a suitable tool being careful not to damage the front cover. Fig. Loosen the front timing chain case bolts in this order-3.5l engine

6 Page 6 of 10 Fig. Insert the appropriate size tool such as J into the notch at the top of the front timing chain case-3.5l engine Fig. Remove the front oil seal from the front timing chain case using a suitable tool-3.5l engine 42. If necessary, remove timing chain and related parts. 43. Use a scraper to remove all of the old sealant from the front timing chain mating surfaces. Be careful not to damage the mating surfaces while cleaning. To install: 1. Install the timing chain and related parts, if removed. 2. Install the left and right dowel pins into the front timing chain case up to a point close to taper in order to shorten protrusion length. 3. Install the front oil seal on the front timing chain case. Apply new engine oil to the oil seal edges. Install it so that each seal lip is oriented as illustrated. 4. Make sure the garter spring is in position and seal lip is not inverted. 5. Apply a inch ( mm) bead of RTV sealant to front timing chain case as illustrated. Make sure to wipe off the protruding sealant prior to installation. 6. Install the dowel pin on the rear timing chain case into the dowel pin hole in the front timing chain case. 7. 8 Page 8 of 10 Fig. Install lower end of front timing chain case tightly onto top surface of the upper oil pan-3.5l engine 10. Tighten the front timing chain case bolts in the order illustrated. Bolt positions in the illustration and torques are as follows: A. Bolt location 1 and 2 with a diameter of 0.31 inch (8 mm) are torqued to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm). B. Bolt locations for bolts 3 through 22 with a diameter of 0.24 inch (6 mm) are torqued to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm). 11. Install the upper oil pan front bolts in the order illustrated and tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm). 12. Install the IVT control valve covers as follows: A. Install new collared O-rings in front cover oil hole on both sides. B. Install new seal rings on the IVT control covers. C. Apply a inch ( mm) bead of RTV sealant to the IVT control covers as illustrated. Fig. Tighten the front timing chain case bolts in the order shown-3.5l engine 13. Being careful not to move the seal ring from the installation groove, align the dowel pins on the chain case with the holes to install the IVT control covers. 14. Tighten the intake valve timing control cover bolts in the order illustrated to 100 inch lbs. (11 Nm). 15. Apply a inch ( mm) bead of liquid gasket to the water pump cover and the chain tensioner cover and install covers. Tighten the bolts on the pump and cover to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm). 16. Install the crankshaft pulley, lubricate the pulley bolt with clean engine oil and tighten the bolt in two steps: A. Step 1: 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm). B. Step 2: degrees clockwise. 17. Rotate crankshaft pulley in a clockwise direction as viewed from front of the engine to confirm it turns smoothly. 18. Install the valve covers in the reverse order of removal, make sure to perform the following: 19. Apply sealant to the areas on the front corners. 20. Tighten the valve cover bolts in two steps in the sequence illustrated: A. Step 1: 17 inch lbs. (1.96 Nm). B. Step 2: 74 inch lbs. (8 Nm). 21. Install the remaining components is in reverse order of removal. NOTE If hydraulic pressure inside chain tensioner drops after removal/installation, slack in the guide may generate a pounding noise during and just after engine start. This is normal. Noise will stop after hydraulic pressure rises.
