4 Summary f By-Electin The Nvember, 99, resignatin f Harry De lng, the Member fr the Abbtsfrd Electral District, created a vacancy in the membership f the Legislative Assembly. Vter Registratin n preparatin fr the cnduct f the by-electin a number f vter registratin initiatives were undertaken. Vter registratin bths were set up at eight lcatins with high pedestrian traffic fr tw weekends in January.,09 new vters were registered and 806 registered vters submitted changes f address. Targeted enumeratins were cnducted in selected subdivisins. New registratins r updates t the vters list were taken at just. % f all residences visited and enumeratrs made n cntact with residents n 9.7% f their calls. Als during this perid a prvince-wide vter registratin/infrmatin campaign was cnducted by way f direct mail t all British Clumbia husehlds. Fr Abbtsfrd, prir t the by-electin registratin cut-ff, a further,99 registratins and updates t the vters list were received. Thrugh these initiatives we were als able t cnfirm fr 6,068 vters that their registratin was current. Staffin the ffice fthe Registrar fvters cnducted a telephne canvass fresidents in the Cultus Lake and Clumbia Valley areas. Out f,96 husehlds called, cntact was made with,0 resulting in,05 cnfirmatins f registratin, 5 updates f registratin, and requests fr registratin frms. 0 husehlds advised us that they did nt wish t participate. The Writ rdered that an electin be held n May, 995. Friday, April, 995, was designated as the day fr the nminatin f candidates; early vting in the ffice f the Returning Officer cmmenced n Saturday, April, 995; and fur cnsecutive days f advance vting began n Wednesday, April 6, 995.,66 vters vted in by-electin. Vter turnut was.07%. Official Results The fficial results fr the by-electin were annunced by the Returning Officer n Mnday, May 8, 995. Jhn van Dngen, endrsed by the Liberal Party fbritish Clumbia, was declared duly elected as the Member t represent the Abbtsfrd Electral District in the Legislative Assembly.
