11 Performance Based Standards Under development in Australia since 2000 Introduced recently in Canada, South Africa OECD/JTRC working group on HGV s performances and regulations: benchmaking of 30 international silhouettes and combinations, vs. several criteria PBS evaluation results expected (J. Woodrooffe, university of Michigan, UMTRI) 11

12 Longer and Heavier Vehicles (LHVs) in EU Current Directive 96/53EC: 40t, m In Sweden and Finland: EMS (EMC) 60 t, m Experimentation with 200 LHVs in the NL Experimentation planned in DK, NO Belgium and Germany carryied extensive studies France and UK carried limited studies EC-DG/TREN ordered a study 1-7/ scenarios, 6 criteria Literature study, stekeholder meetings, web questionnaire First results presented in Brussels (July 10, 2008) 12

20 Enforcement (1) Future will see combination of approaches Static Low -Speed WIM for enforcement High-Speed WIM for accurate pre-selection (even 20 static weighings per day is enough to deter overload) Will High-Speed WIM be used in the future for enforcement? Not by itself in a short term period... Will required app. 15 years in Europe (techn. + legal issues) 20

29 Applications Bridges (2) Dynamics of very heavy trucks is much less important than we thought Bridge litetime may be reduced by fatigue because of HGVs numbers and individual weight increase 29
