3 % flow control OFO & OFOS HYDRAULIC SUBSEA ACTUATORS Design Philosophy Subsea actuators series OFO were developed by BIFFI in the 70s, to be originally employed in ship construction to operate valves for oil loading and ship balancing. OFO actuators are designed for maximum operation reliability in submerged crude oil or sea water environments, and are especially suitable for quarter-turn valves. Subsea actuators requirements - Maximum operating reliability - Easy installation and disassembling without need for any special frame/device - Sturdiness and compactness - Long operating life A rack and pinion mechanism was selected because of these requirements. The spool piece allows quick and safe underwater installation and removal of the actuator. Perfect alignment of the valve shaft is not vital and there is no need for a special frame to facilitate installation. Considerable thought and care were given to the selection of materials, manufacturing, assembly and tests. OFO actuators satisfy the strictest requirements for strength and long life. Construction materials The choice of materials for the housing of OFO and OFOS actuators was made after long and severe tests. Several studies and considerations brought to the final selection of cast iron A with an additional content of 3% Ni for the following external actuators parts: - Actuator frame and cover - Pressure equaliser - Mechanical position indicator The body of the hydraulic cylinder is in ASTM A439 D2C, that is, austenitic iron with high nickel content (up to 20%) and the following properties: - Good resistance to general corrosion and particularly to pitting in calm sea water - No graphitic corrosion - Low friction factor to ensure adequate actuator operation. To avoid all sticking effect, the the O-rings of the dynamic seals have the relevant back-up ring type step seal made in Teflon). In addition, the nickel chromium alloy active metal and ASTM A439 D2C cast iron have the same galvanic corrosion potential: this avoids all galvanic effect between the two main materials of the actuator. The actuator internal parts are in stainless steel AISI 420 and SAF Main bolting is in Teflon-covered alloy steel ASTM A193 B7. 1

Design Particular attention was given actuator compactness. There are no pipings or fittings on the actuator, according to a manifold concept.

For the sake of compactness, integral pressure equalisers are made of the same material as the actuator. The external surface of the actuator is painted to Customer s specification.

Actuator description OFO and OFOS hydraulic double- and single-acting subsea actuators are equipped with a rack and pinion mechanism and plunger-type pistons.

The cylinders are directly fed by the hydraulic manifold and through holes machined in the housing. For the sake of compactness, integral pressure equalisers are made of the same material as the actuator. The external surface of the actuator is painted to Customer s specification. Cleanliness After assembly, the actuator is flushed with the same fluid used for field operations. Cleaning grade is usually referred to international standards such as NAS 1638 class 6. Actuator description OFO and OFOS hydraulic double- and single-acting subsea actuators are equipped with a rack and pinion mechanism and plunger-type pistons. They are available in the following configurations: - Double acting, with two cylinder - Double acting, with four hydraulic cylinders - Single acting, with a cylinder and a spring cartridge - Single acting, with two cylinders and two spring cartridges The actuator may be fitted with several different control systems, according to customer requirements. OFO and OFOS actuators can be installed at any depth under sea level and are complete with a diaphragm pressure equaliser. In this way the internal pressure is equal to the static pressure at installation depth. The spring cartridge of single-acting actuators is also filled with oil or biodegradable water-based fluid, and is connected to the actuator housing. On request, the actuator equalisation device can be of the open type, utilising Nemis oil as actuator filling fluid. OFO/OFOS actuators are also equipped with: 1 - Tactile/visual local position indicator 2 - Stainless steel relief valve (for internal overpressure) 3 - Adjustable mechanical stop on the cylinders 4 - When the spod piece is used, the following features are also available: - Visual local clutching indicator - Automatic spring-actuated clutch for quick coupling to the spool piece - Different-size square spigot for torque transmission and positive actuator position Note: The valve actuator coupling system allows to perform the actuator/valve diagnosis by disconnecting the actuator coupling from the valve stem adaptor without removing the actuator. Therefore the actuator can be stroked without moving the valve, thus allowing functional check of the actuator itself. OFO and OFOS actuators can be equipped with additional gear and ROV interface for emergency valve stroking. Spool piece The actuator is connected to the valve by means of a special spool piece. The actuator is fastened to the spool piece by means of two locking handles, easily accessible and located on top of the actuator. During actuator mounting, the last 100 mm between the actuator and the spool piece are guided by means of a dowel taper pin. Mounting of the actuator on the spool piece is possible regardless of the valve position. 2

The spool piece is complete with: - adjustable mechanical stops.

5 The lower flange of the spool piece is specifically designed to comply with the requirements of the different valve manufacturers. The coupling and fastening quickness, allows to use a single actuator for several valves, providing they are equipped with the same spool piece. The spool piece is complete with: - adjustable mechanical stops. These are set during actuator/valve assembly (before immersion) and allow to remove and replace the submerged actuator with no need for further resetting - electric limit switches (optional) - relief valve to prevent internal overpressure (in case of leakage through the valve stem) - drain valve for internal flushing - protection cover, installed on the spool piece after actuator removal. The cover is equipped with a tactile/visual position indicator. The spool piece can also be supplied in a pressure retaining version. The actuator and the spool piece arrangement can accommodate valve shafts with acceptable misalignment of 10 degrees from vertical and 3 degrees from horizontal. 3

Operational speed fails the dump valve trips and causes the spring to move the actuator to close postion. Q-1 standard. The standard inspection and testing activities for OFO and OFOS subsea actuator are: - material inspection: a) Casting: material inspection according to EN /3.2, according to BIFFI procedure in compliance with ASME V b) Bars: material inspection according to EN /3.2 standard c) Machined parts: dye penetrant and/or X-ray, ultrasonic test etc... are performed according to BIFFI procedures in compliance with International Standards as applicable d) Non-metallic and non-critical low stressed mechanical components including standard nuts and bolts: according to EN standard - final inspection: Each actuator undergoes a final functional test where the following main checkes are performed. - Leakage test - Torque output - Operating speed - Angular stroke - Control group functional test (when applicable) Special testing activities and witness tests are performed on customer request. This also includes tests in simulated subsea conditions using an hyperbaric chamber. OFO-ROV 10
