Michele Hodges, Activities chairperson, is working on a fall activity. Two event names have emerged as possible candidates Porsches in the Park or Porsches by the Parthenon. The details are still coming together but the preliminary idea is a meet and greet format in Centennial Park by the Parthenon. We are working to hold the event in either October or November. Thank you Todd Patterson for the event idea. 8 Solid Gold August 2009 Keeneland Concours D Elegance 2009 by Mike Gillespie, Dealer Liason Photos by Neiland Pennington and Greg Gratkowski, Musik-Stadt Members If you have never been to the Keeneland Concours in Lexington KY it is definitely worth the trip. It is a great drive and not so far that you could not make a day trip out of it. Keeneland has grown over the years to become one of the premier events in the country ( all proceeds benefit the KY Children s Hospital), but the concours is only one piece of this event. There are vendor booths set up to demonstrate (and sell) automotive products, a wonderful art gallery (tent) with automotive pieces for sale, silent auctions, a raffle (this years big raffle was a Porsche Boxter), and the car corrals. Every marquee has their own area at the front of the grounds for parking which makes it a show within a show. There is something for everyone Porsches, Ferraris, So mark your calendar for next year s event. Ferrari will be the featured marquee in Who knows what piece of automotive history will show up for us to salivate over. We could even help the Bluegrass Region blow the Vette guys off the map with more Porsches in one place than KY has ever seen. Boxster Raffle Roadster BMW s, VW, Audi, Muscle cars, exotic cars, Vintage and one of a kind automobiles. Where else could you see all of these great cars in one place? Keeneland is like an all you can eat buffet for anyone who appreciates everything automotive. Just try not to drool on the cars. Perhaps a bib would be in order. The weather for the event was perfect this year. Low 70 s partly cloudy and no rain. We arrived and parked in the Porsche corral with the Bluegrass Region at the front entrance to the grounds facing the Corvette guys across the entrance road. According to the Bluegrass club the Corvette guys are always their biggest challengers for attendance and to win the trophy for the largest contribution to the children s hospital. The turnout this year was awesome to say the least with 80+ Porsches in attendance, and hundreds of others in the car corrals and in the spectator lot. For over an hour there were so many cars rolling in you could not see the end of traffic. WOW what a day.

August 2009 Soap Box Derby by Mike Gillespie, Dealer Liason Solid Gold I have been very fortunate to see many forms of racing over the years, but on Saturday July 25th, I witnessed my first All- American Soap Box Derby. Valerie s niece has been competing in the Soap Box Derby for the last six years. This was only the second time she had made it all the way to the finals. It is very competitive in its own right and most of the finishes are determine through photo finishes. Past the finish line looking up at the start The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program which has run nationally since World Championship finals are held each August at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. The idea of the Soap Box Derby grew out of a photographic assignment of Dayton, Ohio, newsman Myron Scott. He covered a race of boy-built cars in his home community and was so impressed with this event that he acquired a copyright for the idea and began development of a similar program on a national scale. The first All-American race was held in Dayton in The following year, the race was moved to Akron because of its central location and hilly terrain. In 1936, Akron civic leaders recognized the need for a permanent track site for the youth racing classic and, through the efforts of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), Derby Downs became a reality. continued on page 12
Solid Gold August 2009 Macht, Wiedeking and Haerter... Oh My! Stuttgart. Today the Supervisory Board of Porsche Automobil Holding SE, Stuttgart, together with Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking and Holger P. Haerter agreed upon their dismissal. Both Members of the Board of Management will leave Porsche SE and Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG with immediate effect, but will provide advice to both companies (make themselves available for serving both companies as consultants) as wished by the Supervisory board. Both resign from their respective seats at the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG and Audi AG. Thomas Edig, Board member in charge of Human Resources of Porsche AG will become his deputy. Furthermore Macht and Edig have been appointed as Members of the Board of Management of Porsche SE, Macht in charge of technology and products, Edig with responsibility for commercial issues and administration. The Supervisory Board expressed its thanks to both Board members resigning from office for their long lasting work. The Board has offered Dr. Wiedeking a compensation for In the last weeks Wiedeking and Haerter have come to the conclusion, that the further strategic development of Porsche SE and Porsche AG is better off, if they are not on board as acting persons. They both see that step as a significant contribution to the appeasement of the situation and to support the forming of an integrated car manufacturing company. Both gentlemen will accompany the handover at the Board of Management level positively and support their respective successor in their tasks. Wendelin Wiedeking in his functions as CEO Porsche AG will be followed by Michael Macht, currently Board member of Porsche AG in charge of Production and Logistics. the termination of his contract, originally maturing 2012, of Euros 50 million. Wiedeking accepted this proposal as well as Holger P. Haerter, who was offered a compensation of Euros 12.5 million. Both Wiedeking and Haerter waived rights deriving from their current contracts in a substantial amount. Dr. Wiedeking was appointed CEO of Porsche AG on October After successfully turning around the company he managed to make the Stuttgart based manufacturer of sporty luxury cars the most profitable car company in the world. In September 2005 Porsche made public a 20 percent stake in common shares of Volkswagen AG. As a con-
August 2009 sequence Wiedeking joined the VW Supervisory Board in January After the forming of Porsche Automobil Holding SE in November 2007 he also took over the position of Chairman of the Board of Management in this Holding company that alongside 100 percent in Porsche AG today also owns in VW AG. Holger P. Haerter joined the Stuttgart based company in 1996 as Member of the Board of Management in charge of Financing and Accounting as well as Sourcing. Similar to Wiedeking he sits on the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG. In November 2007 he was appointed member of the Board of Management in charge of Finance of Porsche SE and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Management by the Supervisory Board. Soap Box Derby continued... Solid Gold Michael Macht, born in Stuttgart in 1960, studied Mechanical Engineering at Stuttgart University and was scientist at Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO, before he started his career at Porsche AG in 1990, becoming specialist for engine planning. After serving as Director s Assistant with respect to production and materials management, concept and the organization of the PVP Porsche improvement process, he became Chairman s Aisstant, developing and implementing the so called P.O.L.E. program, short for process optimization through supplier integration. In 1994 he was promoted to Managing Director of the freshly founded Porsche Consulting GmbH and in 1998 became Member of the Board of Management in charge of Production and Logistics of Porsche AG. His work is centered around increasing efficiency in production. Macht was in charge of the building and start of operation for the Leipzig factory as well as the wramp up of the model lines Cayenne and Panamera. Thomas Edig was born 1961 in Stuttgart. After graduating in Business Administration from the University of Cooperative Education in Karlsruhe in 1986, he was employed at Alcatel SEL AG in Stuttgart. Following a number of promotions, he became member of the Board and HR Director in 1998, before being appointed to the Executive Board of Alcatel in Paris in After an intermezzo at Deutsche Telekom AG in Bonn in 2006 he was employed at Porsche AG. In May 2007 he has been appointed a Member of the Board responsible for Human Resources and Labor Relations Director. Porsche North America Press Release 7/23/2009 Picture from : The cars are off and running. Valerie s niece is in the far left lane The idea of the Soap Box Derby grew out of a photographic assignment of Dayton, Ohio, newsman Myron Scott. Each year since, with the exception of during World War II, youngsters from throughout the United States and several foreign countries have come to Akron with the racers they have built and driven to victory in their home communities. There will be three racing divisions in most locals and at the All-American competition. The Stock division is designed to give the first-time builder a learning experience. Boys and girls, 8 through 13 compete in simplified cars built from kits purchased from the All-American. These kits assist the Derby novice by providing a step-by-step layout for construction of a basic lean forward style car. The Super Stock Car division, ages 10 through 17, gives the competitor an opportunity to expand their knowledge and build a more advanced model. Both of these beginner levels make use of kits and shells available from the All-American. These entry levels of racing are popular in race communities across the country, as youngsters are exposed to the Derby program for the first time.
Solid Gold August 2009 Soap Box Derby continued... The Masters division offers boys and girls, 10 through 17, an advanced class of racer to try their creativity and design skills in. Masters entrants may purchase a Scottie Masters Kit with a fiberglass body from the All-American Soap Box Derby. The goals of the Soap Box Derby program have not changed since it began in They are to teach youngsters some of the basic skills of workmanship, the spirit of competition and the perseverance. Coffee & Cars by Mike Gillespie, Dealer Liason For almost two years now, some of the Nissan employees and many other local car and motorcycle enthusiasts have been gather on a Saturday morning to enjoy Cars and Coffee. This gathering is actually a transplant from California where the Nissan employees use to call home. Once Nissan moved the headquarters to Williamson County (and so did many of the employees), so moved their informal gathering. Valerie s niece is in car #59 Abby (her name) At the time that the above picture was taken, the racers were 4/5 down the track and the finish line was 175 feet to the right. This was Abby s first run but regretfully she came in second to the pink car and her day was over. The only consolation is that the girl that was in the pink car that beat her came in second overall at the end of the day in the Masters Division. Abby is getting to old (and to tall 5 11 ) to race in the Soap Box Derby so I have hinted about going to go carts. We will see. Since starting the Cars and Coffee, which is held at the Panera Bread parking lot in Cool Springs starting at 7:30am, there have been local car and motorcycle enthusiast who have started joining in. This is a very informal gathering and happens, at least at this point, on sporadic Saturday mornings. Participants will gather at 7:30am and hang around till 9am or even later. With Panera Bread being in the parking lot, you can get yourself a morning Danish and a hot cup of coffee. The pictures shown here are from the last gathering on July 11th. On that day, there were a large number of Ferraris (5) including a brand new Scuderia. There were also a number of motorcycles; 4 BMWs and 3 Ducatis. It seems that each new gathering, more and more cars and motorcycles are s h o w i n g up. If you would like to come out and join the group, send an to Peter Bedrosian at Peter.Bedrosian@Nissan-Usa.com who is the one that is keeping the list and sending out notifications for the gatherings. Hope you can find time to come out and join us for Cars and Coffee. Answer: 1957 VW Euro Sedan
August 2009 Solid Gold MusikStadt Trifecta - Blue Heron Riverboat Cruise, Catfish Dinner & Drive-In Movie Here is your chance to engage three very enjoyable things on the same day! A perfect Trifecta! We ll start out on Saturday, Sept 19th at 2:30 p.m. at the Loveless Cafe parking lot at 8400 Hwy 100, Nashville, TN. First, we plan on pulling out at 2:45 p.m. and heading through some really nice back roads to Ashland City to hook up with the Blue Heron Riverboat Cruise at 4 p.m. ( This will be a relaxed 2-hour cruise on the beautiful Cumberland River in the Ashland City area. There is a portable restroom on board the Pontoon Boat, as well as facilities in the restaurant. Feel free to bring wine or drinks on board the boat, but responsibility is encouraged, so we don t have to pull your butt out of the water! Second, after the cruise ends, we will enjoy a delicious Catfish Dinner (or almost anything else) at the Riverview Restaurant ( Riverview) located at 110 Old River Road (also the port of the Blue Heron) in Ashland City. You can find a full menu at the above website. The Riverview is a favorite place for locals who really know good catfish when they taste it. Third, after eating dinner, we will hit the road again and drive to the Dickson Drive-In in Dickson, TN. The features will be announced, but we know you ll enjoy the movie no matter what is showing. Be sure and plan on bringing your chairs-in-a-bag, a Boom Box, some bug spray and possibly a light jacket, as the nights cool down. VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!! The Blue Heron only has 24 seats on it, so it will be First Come, First Served on a reservation to Vic and Judy at vicandjudydavis@comcast.net. Please include your name, phone number, and address in your RSVP. We will notify the first 24, and keep the next 10 on a standby list. If you don t make the list of 24, you can still meet us for dinner at 6 p.m. at Riverview and join us for the Drive-In. The cost for the Blue Heron Cruise is $8.50 per person. After confirmation of RSVP, please send check made out to MusikStadt and send to Vic Davis, 1524 Crockett Hills Blvd., Brentwood, TN, Note: The Blue Heron and Riverview dinner are a rain-or-shine event. In event of general rain, we will cancel the Drive In Movie.
Rally to the Stars To benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank The Fourth Annual Rally to the Stars Rally and Car gathering took place on Sunday June 14th. This event was hosted by Tom and Jane Smith who put together a rally and hosted a dinner at their home. We meet at 2:30pm Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of the Courtyard by Marriott in Cool Springs off of Carothers Parkway. We received our instruction from host and organizer Tom Smith. A line of cars passing over Hwy 96 on the Natchez Trace Parkway. The rally ended at the home of Tom and Jane Smith on Tyne Blvd. The Smith s yard was filled with a unique collection of cars from almost every marquee. Admission to the Rally and dinner afterwards was cans of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank. Our Host Tom Smith giving out Rally Instructions. We took off from the parking lot, heading out on our Rally. The rally was 1 ½ hours long and ran through southwest Williamson County, through canopy covered roads and passing many beautiful homes and farms. One of the final roads was the Natchez Trace Parkway which made for some scenic pictures. Cars were park all over Tom s yard. Once we had made a pass through the yard looking at the vast array of vehicles, we made our way to Tom s fantastic garage.
Just one row of many filled with unique and beautiful cars. Tom was very gracious in allowing the attendees to see his unbelievable garage and wonderful collection of cars. Many of us spent quite a lot of time in Tom s garage just taking it all in. There was so much to see. After taking in all that Tom s garage had to offer, we proceeded to the back yard which had a large patio area and beautiful pool. There we enjoyed our own liquid libations and a wonderful BBQ dinner served up by Jane Smith. Folks gathered in the food line to grab some great BBQ. This was a most enjoyable event; great rally, collection of cool cars and plenty of good food and hospitality. A special thanks to the Smith family for their gracious hospitality is already in the works and you will not want to miss that one.
