3 Introduction The RIT Human Powered Vehicle Team is an entirely student led entity with minimal faculty supervision. Members of our team are responsible for designing, manufacturing, and testing of the vehicle. After almost ten wonderful years of racing at NASA s The Great Moonbuggy Race, winning first place in 2007 and 2009, our team has decided it is now time to move on. Starting in 2010, we competed in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers sponsored Human Powered Vehicle Competition with an overall rank of 5 out of 12. We are eager to use our past engineering experience and a lot of hard work to tackle our goals and improve our performance this year. In April, 2011 our team will be travelling to Indianopolis for the HPVC East Competition representing RIT. We ve been working hard all year to prepare, but we can t do it without valuable sponsors like you to support us.
4 Benefits of your Support National and local press coverage - Interviews by media outlets attending the competition in which we recognize the support of our sponsors - Team regularly featured in Rochester s foremost newspaper publication - Internal coverage in RIT s online news, publication, and magazine Advertising for your company within the RIT campus - Sponsor companies will be featured in our display case on the mechanical engineering floor of the Kate Gleason College of Engineering - At all major events and activities including Club Day, Brick City Homecoming, and the RIT Innovation Festival which attracts thousands of people all over the world Company name or logo will appear on vehicle and team uniforms - Your company will be featured on the chassis or fairing of our vehicle - Logos will be featured on the gear worn by our team during the competition and all other related events. Opportunity to employ experienced student for internships or co-ops - Talented and knowledgeable students gain experience with the design process, CAD software, machining and manufacturing, assembly, and testing - Team members learn the value of team work and how to manage a real engineering project Sponsorship BBQ - A BBQ to recognize our team for their hard work and our sponsors for their valuable support. The BBQ will be an opportunity for our sponsors to interact with the team, mechanical engineering department faculty and professors
5 History of the Team The RIT Human Powered Vehicle Team has existed in its current form since Our club is recognized and supported by RIT s Student Government, the Kate Gleason College of Engineering, the Mechanical Engineering Department, and our sponsors. Below is a brief history of our team since its conception and the progress we ve made thus far The teams first year competing in NASA s Moonbuggy competition. The seven member team placed 13 th out of 20 teams The team returned to the competition with many of the same members and a redesigned Moonbuggy that placed 11 th out of 28 teams The moonbuggy was redesigned and placed 19 th out of 29 teams This time, the team took the form of a senior design project. The vehicle was designed and optimized using software like ANSYS, IDEAS, and tested with stress/strain gauges for optimal performance. We placed 16 th out of 32 teams A new team made of rookies took hold of the senior design project and placed 12 th out of 39 teams. All aspects of the vehicle were redesigned and improved with ANSYS and Solidworks With 16 members, the team became officially recognized by the RIT Student Government. The Moonbuggy performed very well and completed the course in 4 minutes and 7 seconds, the second fastest time, but placed in 6 th of 29 teams due to a penalty. This year s success was a result of design optimizations and weight reduction The Moonbuggy featured a new design based on carbon fiber over aluminum tubes for additional weight reduction For the first time ever, the RIT team placed 1 st out of 22 teams in 4 minutes and 38 seconds. Our success was a combination of years of engineering and competition experience Due to a mechanical failure during the race, the team could not complete the course After setbacks in 2008, the team once again placed 1 st out of 73 teams in 3 minutes and 30 seconds due to an optimized and elegant design with a focus on simplicity The RIT Human Powered Vehicle team competed at the 2010 ASME Human Powered Vehicle Competition for the first time. The team had an overall rank of 5 out of 12 in the speed category.
Goals The RIT Human Powered Vehicle Team s goal for 2011 is to build a fully functional vehicle for the ASME HPVC East competition this coming April. This will be our second time at this competition and we would like to see a strong and improved performance from both our vehicle and from our team. To that end, our 11 member team has been organized into subgroups to work on various aspects of the vehicle design, much like how real companies manage their projects. We will work in areas such as drivetrain, fairing, chassis, steering, braking, safety, and testing. Project managers will work to integrate these components into a high performance vehicle that values functionality, lightness, and simplicity. Our team will use programs such as Solidworks, ANSYS, and a CFD package to model the vehicle, run stress and deflection analyses, and simulate aerodynamics. We hope to use composites in our design such as kevlar and carbon fiber to reduce the weight wherever possible while maintaining the necessary strength we desire. The one rider vehicle will be built to compete in the utility competition. Our members will also be training to ensure they are well prepared for the challenge. In the long term, we would like to see our team grow in terms of its capabilities and resources so that we could compete in multiple competitions and still be a strong contender. Our charter is such that we could build any human powered vehicle, land, sea, or air and compete with it. While we will certainly face challenges, are team is very capable and can achieve these goals with the proper tools, materials, and funding.
7 Supporting the Team Our team is very motivated and eager to succeed, but our resources are limited. RIT has generously provided us with access to a machine shop and computing. However, we still require materials for our vehicle and specialized tooling for manufacturing. Traveling and lodging expenses for our trip to the competition will be expensive. Monetary donations are needed to make everything possible. However, we are also interested in services that a prospective sponsor could provide. Discounts on parts, materials, tools, hardware, engineering software licenses, use of company CNCs, other machining, transportation, and lodging would all be valuable contributions. All donations contribute to the success of our team, are greatly appreciated, and are tax deductible. Sponsor Contributions Gold Sponsor $500 and above: - 8 by 10 inch logo on vehicle s fairing - Large logo on team uniforms - Large logo on the RIT Human Powered Vehicle website - 8 by 10 inch logo on the team display case at RIT - Signed team picture with the vehicle - Guaranteed recognition on local and national level Silver Sponsor $100 to $500: - 5 by 7 inch logo on vehicle s fairing - Medium logo on team uniforms - Medium logo on the RIT Human Powered Vehicle website - 5 by 7 inch logo on the team display case at RIT - Signed team picture with the vehicle Bronze Sponsor $100 and below: by 5 inch logo on vehicle s fairing - Small logo on team uniforms - Small logo on the RIT Human Powered Vehicle website by 5 inch logo on the team display case at RIT - Signed team picture with the vehicle
