All About Military Birds The engines fitted to the 190 and 195 became well known for their oil consumption. The aircraft has a 5- US-gallon (19 L) oil tank, with 2 US gallons (7.6 L) the minimum for flight. Typical oil consumption with steel cylinder barrels is two quarts per hour. Earlier this year, Aeroworks came out with a new airplane model called the Cessna 190 or LC-126. I have seen it at a few RC shows and it flew pretty nice, but I didn t know much about the real plane. So I went straight to Wikipedia to see what info they had on the plane. This is what I found: The Cessna 190 and 195 were Cessna's only postwar radial-engine aircraft. The first prototype flew in 1945 and after the end of World War II both the 190 and 195 entered production in Equipped with Edo floats, the LC-126A on display (S/N ) is marked as it appeared while serving with the 10th Rescue Squadron at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, in Needing a rugged aircraft with excellent performance for Arctic rescue service, the U.S. Air Force acquired 15 Cessna Model 195 aircraft in Designated the LC-126, these light utility transport aircraft were identical to the Model 195 except for the paint scheme, interior fittings, emergency escape hatch and radio equipment. Civilian Cessna 190 / 195 Businessliner. The aircraft was expensive to purchase and operate for private use, therefore Cessna decided to market them mainly as a business aircraft under the name "Businessliner" Delivered in January 1950, each LC-126 came equipped with an interchangeable set of floats and skis to permit operation from land, snow or water. The 195 model was also used by the United States Air Force, Air National Guard and Army as a light transport and utility aircraft under the designation LC-126. Aeroworks test pilot Robert, preps his LC-126 (90 ws) for a flight during a Longmont RC event. The plane was also flown during the Warbirds over Denver and Warbirds over Pueblo. 3 Show & Tell Item - I Curt Hughes Hanger Nine P-47D Thunderbolt OOPS! Wrong Carrier Article from Flight Journal Magazine As I was reading through one of my many Flight Journal magazines (April 2012), I ran across this quite humorous article. Here is the short version; During the closing days of the Korean War, this unfortunate F9F Panther pilot from the USS Lake Champlain was returning from an extensive patrol mission. Forgetting where his base carrier was, he landed on the wrong carrier, the USS Yorktown. As the pilot went below decks to get debriefed, a bite to eat and to take a quick break, the maintenance crews on the flight deck were happy to take care of his Panther for him. This poor Panther got painted! They immediately obtained several gallons of white paint and proceeded to remark the parked Panther. The tail V Squadron ID was changed to the M Squadron ID, they changed the nose number from 134 to 184 and of course added other comments all over the plane. Curtis recently purchased the new Hanger Nine P-47D and decided to show the audience. Curt has it powered by an Eflite 160 motor, turning a 19x10 prop on two six-cell batteries. The plane has a ws of 81 and will weigh between pounds when complete. Nice! When the pilot returned to his jet expecting a serviced Panther ready to go, he was shocked to see his painted Panther ready to go! But he was even more embarrassed when he had to return to his home carrier with his new look! The article goes into detail what many of the newly acquired markings represents, I just pointed out a few of the simple ones. So if you get the Flight Journal magazine, check it out! Pretty funny. 4 Once in a lifetime Moment Photos by a Fort Collins Photographer Last month during the Warbirds over the Rockies, the event coordinators invited special guests Charles McGee and Donald Elder, both renowned Tuskegee Airmen, to attend the warbirds event. Club member Greg Banas, knew in advance that they were coming, so he decided to bring his Byron kit, Tuskegee P-51D Mustang out for display. It turned out to be a good move for Greg. He met with both honored guest speakers and they even autographed each wing half. Greg learning a little bit of P-51 maintenance from Tuskegee Airman Donald Elder-Brown. This is a short narrative that was written for Col McGee at the event: This year we are thrilled to have Colonel Charles McGee, of the Tuskegee Airmen. Col. McGee flew the fabled Red Tail P-51 Mustang, recently featured in the Hollywood movie Red Tails. He has flown more combat missions than any other American pilot during WWII, Korea and Viet Nam (409 combat missions). He lives in Arlington Virginia and is 92 years young. The colonel s plane was named Kitten. She was a member of the 332nd Bomber Escort Group during WWII. Col Charles McGee was impressed with the fine work and detail that Greg put into his Mustang. After the signing, Greg kept the Mustang out on display for the rest of the day, attracting plenty of pilots, spectators and photographs. Not sure if the plane is in flying status, but after getting the plane autographed, I would ground the plane forever! Greg also spoke with Tuskegee Airman Donald Elder-Brown, an aircraft mechanic that worked on P- 47 Thunderbolts and Red Tail P-51 Mustangs. McGee's P-51B , nicknamed "Kitten" after his wife. Col McGee also flew F-80 Shooting Stars and F-89 Scorpions during the Korean War and RF-4 Phantom II s during the Vietnam War. Greg had an awesome day. He came out with an RC airplane and returned home with a piece of history. Nice going Greg! PPRCC Newsletter 4

Ignition Test Article sent in by Frank Tuxworth If you want to test an ignition, this info is in post 24 of the gas engine sticky. Below is a cut and paste of Jedijodi's instructions: It was requested that I post this troubleshooting guide for Rcexl and many C&H ignitions here in this thread. If you have no spark or think you are having an ignition problem, carefully following this guide will test the ignition module, hall sensor, and spark plug cap components. This guide can be used for single or twin cylinder ignitions, it does not test the manual or any optical ignition switches that may be in the system. You will need a good fully charged 4 cell Nicad or Nimh battery, an old servo extension, and your trusty volt meter. So,... 3/8", if it does this there is nothing wrong with the ignition, if you hear an arc but it's not in the cap with the screw driver, it could be a problem with the resistor in the cap or the high tension lead where it goes into the cap, replace the plug cap. All of this can be done on a bench, the plug does not need to be grounded to the engine. Hitec Servo Splines Chart submitted by Mike Weidner Take an old expendable servo extension and cut off the male plug end, separate the wires, strip a bit of insulation from each of the 3 leads and plug the other end into the sensor lead on the ignition module. Put a good spark plug in the cap, doesn't need to be all the way seated but far enough for the hex of the plug to make good contact with the metal shell of the plug cap, plug a fully charged 4 cell battery directly into the ignition. Test for battery voltage at the red and black wires of the test extension you made and plugged into the sensor lead of the module, if there is no voltage replace the module, if there is battery voltage-> Short the white and black wires together, every time you break this connection there should be a spark, no or intermittent spark=bad module, has good spark. Remove the test lead and plug the sensor on the engine into the module and turn the engine over, no spark, replace the sensor, good spark. Remove the spark plug, look down into the plug cap and turn the engine over, if you see spark arcing through the silicone boot to the metal shell, replace the spark plug cap, no visible spark but you hear a snap. Put a small screw driver into the bottom of the cap, turn the engine over and you should observe spark jumping from the screw driver to the plug cap shell outside of the silicone boot, an arc of about 1/4"- PPRCC Newsletter 5

Show & Tell Item II Rick Paquin s CMP L-39 Albatros So, What is This Airplane? Clue #1: During the early days of this plane, it was considered one of the largest land-based aircraft of its time. It also set four world records in speed, distance, duration and payload carried. Clue #2: With the wings being 5ft 7in at the thickest point, passengers could be seated inside the wings with an outside, forward looking view. There were also two passenger seats located in the nose. Rick recently purchased a CMP Plug & Play L- 39. It is powered by a 90mm inducted fan, weighs about 81/4 pounds and has a 56 wingspan. Rick hopes the current landing gear will survive its first flight, but may install sturdier landing gear at a later time. Clue #3: Because of the large space inside the wings, this was one of the few planes that allowed the flight engineers to physically access the engines while in flight. Last month s plane was a big, bad Beechcraft XA-38 Grizzly. There were no correct answers on that tough bear! PPRCC Newsletter 6

Fremont County Airport & EAA Airshow The airport was a very controlled environment with all types of aircraft coming and going, in the air and on the ground and spectators everywhere. The safety personal on the ground did a great job. Back in September, many of our PPRC members headed north to the Warbirds over the Rockies event. I decided to head south and check out the Fremont County Airport event. A formation of RV-4 s executes a fly-by with smoke on. They performed several shows throughout the day. The airport is located just east of Canon City, a short 90 minute drive from Colorado Springs. It was a one-day show, hosted by the airport and the local Fremont County RC club. There were a multiple of aviation activities going on, including skydiving, airplane flight demonstrations, helicopter rides, RC airplane flying and airplane static displays. Oh yeah, they also had a row of classic cars on display too! The representative for the Fremont County RC club, Mark Sullivan (red shirt & hat) poses next to an Aeroworks Bi-plane. Some of the more interesting full-scale planes on display were the A-1 Husky with tundra tires, a Cessna 170 and a Hawker Sea Fury, all nice looking planes. I stayed for a few hours, chatted with several Fremont County RC members, viewed the displays and took plenty of pictures. A few of our PPRC members also attended the event, Marco and Doug. Just a few of the many RC airplanes on display for the spectators. RC flying took place on the west end of the airfield. As soon as we figure out how to post pictures on the website again, pictures will be posted! And I would like to thank Mark Sullivan for the PPRC invitation that he posted on our club website, Thanks Mark! PPRCC Newsletter 7

Keith Snell Harris Obituary sent in by Milt Woodham I just received word that one of our old members from several years back just died. I don't have a lot of information, but Keith Harris was in his lifetime a crop duster pilot, a United Airlines pilot, a USAF pilot, and a pilot for Colorado Interstate Gas. but it might be a nice touch to mention Keith in a future newsletter issue. He was an active member of PPRC and a long time modeler. Keith Snell Harris ( ) 1924~2012 Kaysville, UT-Keith Snell Harris passed from this life into the loving arms of his Heavenly Father, and the many loved ones awaiting his arrival beyond the veil, October 05, 2012, in Kaysville, Utah. His life was faithfully centered upon the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and his Lord and Savior. He had great faith in Jesus Christ and in the promise of eternal life. He will be missed by all but never forgotten. He loved his family, his church and his country. Keith was born in Lovell, Wyoming on May 1, 1924 to James Keith and Minerva (Snell) Harris. He graduated from Lovell High School and then attended college at Visalia, California. He then enlisted in the Air Force and took his flight training in California and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. Keith then went on to teach as a Flight Instructor. At this time he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Eliza Tolman, when they were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple, March 17, He lost his beautiful bride after 50 years while they were on their Golden Wedding Anniversary cruise in Skagway, Alaska on Aug. 6, After his discharge he became a civilian flight instructor for several years. Keith then went to work for Continental airlines and several oil companies for 34 years before hanging up his wings after 21,000 hours of flying time and retiring. During his time with the oil companies he flew company executives throughout the world and came to realize what a CHOICE land America and the United States truly are. Keith was then married to his longtime family friend, Imogene Bell on Feb. 18, 1995 in Denver, CO. She passed away May 6, 2007 in Layton, UT. Keith then married Doris Jones Oct. 26, 2007 in Rapid City, SD. They were later sealed in the Bountiful Temple Aug. 2, Keith served in many LDS church callings including: Patriarch-18 yrs at Pikes Peak Colorado Stake and Bishop-3rd ward, Pikes Peak Stake at Colorado Springs, CO, Sealer for 6 years at the LDS Denver Temple, Denver, CO, High Councilman-Pikes Peak Stake and Genealogist. Keith Harris posing while at the Black Forest airfield. Keith loved his Family, the Gospel and Flying. He, along with his sons spent many years flying large model airplanes throughout Wyoming, Colorado, Utah and Nevada. He taught and instilled the love of flying in many other people along the way Support Your Local Hobby Store! Do you have a story, article or a picture that you would like to share with the club? 9 UCCS 2012 Science Fair The Science Festival kicked off at 9:00 am and ended around 3:00 pm. And we didn t have to break for lunch, they brought pizza and drinks to us! PPRC members Gus Grissom, Rick Paquin and myself decided to spend some time in college last month. UCCS held its annual Science Fair again and it was the second time for PPRCC to participate in the science event. Gus and I went last year and again this year, Gus was the key driving force to have the club represented. Rick bravely hands his radio over to an eager spectator as he explains the functions of the flight controls. She didn t drop it! PPRCC members Keith Davis (L), Gus Grissom (C) and Rick Paquin (R) spent the day in school, talking to visitors about RC modeling. I brought my ESM T-28 Trojan, Gus brought his brand new Elan turbine jet and Rick brought his induct-fan Habu. We kept busy all day, answering questions about RC flying, the cost of the hobby, where do we fly and how does someone get started in the hobby. Many of the viewers thought my T-28 was just a static model. But when I told them that it really flies, they were quite impressed. The kids were much more inquisitive this year than last year, they were asking questions that at times we had to really think about. One youngster actually asked Rick about 20 questions on his Habu before he was satisfied. The Colorado Springs Soaring Society club also attended and was set up next to us. PPRC member Milt Woodham and his grandson Jacob, wer there, representing the soaring club. The Soaring Club was scheduled to fly electric demonstration flights out at the soccer field the following Wednesday. Hope that was a great turnout for them! Gus received many questions on his Elan. How fast does it go, how long can it fly, is that a real jet engine and the most common question, how much does it cost?! Overall it was a great event and we hoped that we represented the club well and encouraged RC flying. Once the website is figured out, there will be more pictures posted! PPRCC Newsletter 9
