Dave Grife with his Travel Air Mystery Ship This beautiful Thompson Trophy Racer mounts a geared Astro Cobalt 90 motor running on 36 Nicad cells and spins a 22x14 prop at 4,700 Rpm.

3 Dave Grife with his Travel Air Mystery Ship This beautiful Thompson Trophy Racer mounts a geared Astro Cobalt 90 motor running on 36 Nicad cells and spins a 22x14 prop at 4,700 Rpm. The model is true one quarter scale and has a wing span of 87 inches and weighs 18-1/2 pounds. The fuselage is made of Fiberglass and the wing is conventional balsa built up and fully sheeted.

4 Dave with his Hawker Hurricane The one sixth scale Hawker Hurricane is powered by an Astro Cobalt 40 with super box swinging a 16 x 12 prop on 24 Nicad cells. The model weighs 9 pounds with retracts.

Hughes H-1 Racer Howard Hughes set two International Speed Records with his Racer in the 1930s: the airplane now hangs in the Smithsonian. Dave built this model to 1/6.

Dave built this model to 1/6.6 scale, wing span is 65 inches, weight 6.5 pounds. The model is powered by an Astro Cobalt 40 with Super Box and a 23 cell Nicad battery pack. Dave drew his plans from Paul Matt drawings.

7 The Hoffmeister Sundowner This is a quarter scale model of the Sundowner a formula one racing plane. The model was flown at the NEAT fair at Pleasant Valley N.Y. Power is supplied by an Astro-150 motor and two seven 5000 mahr Thunder Power Lithium battery pack.

8 Dave Baron s Aerobatic Carden Yak-54 Dave Baron demonstrates the aerobatic performance of his Carden Yak-54 at the NEAT fair in Pleasant Valley New York. The quarter scale model is powered by an Astro-300 motor.

9 John Liberg s Super Skybolt John s Super Skybolt is powered by an Astro 60 brushless motor running on an 8 cell Lithium Polymer battery. The model weighs in at 9-1/4 pounds.

10 Art Thom s Boeing 314 China Clipper Art Thom s 1/16 scale Yankee Clipper shown on its first flight on June 24, 1993 at Manahawkin Lake NJ. The model has a 91/2 foot wing span and weighs about 17 pounds. The Yankee Clipper is powered by four Astro 05 Cobalt Motors and thirty five 1700mahr Nicads. The 314 is controlled by a JR-PCM radio control system and an Astro 207 Electronic speed control. More photos below.

12 Curt Massey with his Quarter Scale Wag-Aero Cub Curt Massey of Texas with his quarter scale Wag-Aero Cub powered by an Astro 60 Direct drive motor on 28 Sanyo 2400 Mahr cells. The model has a smoke system installed for Aerobatic routines. The model took top honors in a recent contest in Texas.

13 Woody Blanchard s Sikorski S-42 Woody s 1/20 scale Sikorski S-42 has wing span of 71 inches, a wing area of 478 square inches and a length of 41 inches. The model is powered by four Astro Cobalt 035 motors turning scale size 6-1/2 x 4 props direct drive. The motors are not synchronized. Woody reports that the S-42 gets off the water quite nicely. When talking to woody one day about a B-24 model he had built I asked about the triangle insignia on the tail. Turns out woody and my cousin Jack Boucher were both pilots of B-24 s in North Africa and Italy in World War II.

Steven Johnson s one sixth scale Northrop Gamma Steve Johnson of Waukesha WI fitted his one sixth scale Northrup Gamma with an Astro Sport 60 Cobalt motor and an Astro 205 electronic speed control.

The Gamma has a wing span of 95 inches, a wing area of 1452 square inches and a length of 62 inches. Steve did not report the weight but my guess is 15 pounds. The original Gamma weighs 4100 pounds, so the 1/6 scale weight would be 19 pounds.
