Balance those Props! Item - I Daryl Lloyd s Top Flite P-40 Warhawk At the March club meeting, club member Dan Brunson conducted a very informative prop balancing class for those who attended the meeting. Why balance your props? A well-balanced prop will reduce engine vibration, reduce aircraft stress and can even increase engine rpm up to 500 rpm. Dan demonstrates how a balanced prop should sit, it should not move, no matter what position the prop is in, not just the 3 and 9 o clock position. If the prop needs to be sanded down, sand the back-side trailing edge of the blade. If lots of sanding needs to be done, the hub can also be sanded. Dan also said that you should never glue a split wooden prop back together or glue a broken plastic prop back together, that s just asking for trouble. Good to know info! Daryl is proud of his recently completed, six month project P-40 Warhawk (ARF). This beauty is powered by a Genoah G-62 gas engine, has an 86 ws, retractable tailwheel and weighs pounds. Daryl has not flown the plane yet. PPRCC Newsletter 2
Northern Colorado Swap Meet Item - II Rick Paquin s ESM Hawker Hurricane If you missed the Jefco Auction back in February, don t despair, there s a RC swap meeting going on this month in Loveland, CO. I have not been to this event yet, but if the weather is good, (I-25 can be a nightmare in bad weather) I hope to check it out! Rick brought in his highly detailed Burma Theater Hurricane. It is powered by a CRC Pro 50 gas engine, operated by all digital servos and weighs about 17 pounds. Rick is looking forward to its first flight real soon! PPRCC Newsletter 3
All About Military Birds When it was time to land on the aircraft carrier, the jet engine would be shut down or brought to idle and the piston engine would be used for the carrier landing. This allowed for a more reliable engine at slower landing speeds. Soon after WWII, jet propulsion began to merge as the primary source airplane power. However as powerful as they were, they were not completely reliable. They were slow to spool up and tended to flame out at low engine idle speeds. These problems were a serious concern for the U.S. Navy, since they wanted to convert all of their carrier-based, piston-driven aircraft into the newer, jet-powered aircraft. North American AJ Savage. You can clearly see the jet engine exhaust port in the rear. Ryan FR-1 Fireball. Note the feathered prop as the jet engine provides the power. To overcome the jet engine short-comings, the U.S. Navy tried an unusual idea. They contracted a few aircraft companies to build aircraft with a piston engine(s) and a jet engine(s). The piston/jet combination was used by the U.S. Navy throughout the late 1940 s and into early 1950 s. By then the jet engine became much more reliable and the newer aircraft carriers were being modified to handle jet landings. Therefore the piston/jet aircraft was removed from service. The concept of the piston engine/jet engine combination was to use the jet engine for take-offs and flight. During normal flight the piston engine could also be used for additional power or shut down and the props feathered to reduce drag. The Fairchild C-123 Provider was used by the USAF. It had two General Electric turbojets and two Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp piston engines. The USAF applied the jet/prop idea on transport planes to reduce takeoff distance. The Curtis XF-15 C1, just three were built. Only one exists today at the Quonset Air Museum, Rhode Island. Did you Know? Boeing B-47 Stratojet crews were prohibited from practicing touch and go maneuvers. This was because it took nearly 30 seconds for the six jet engines to reach take-off power again. By then the jet would be out of runway! PPRCC Newsletter 4
Snow Birds Item - III Keith Davis Global ARF U-6 Beaver Club member Ben Woofter sent me a few pictures of him and fellow hard-core flyer Leif Hermansson flying from our snow-covered field back in February. Leif getting ready to fire up his Big Stik. He got it running and taxi s out. Ben got in a few cold flights too. Keith wheeled in his 112 ws U.S. Army Beaver for. It is powered by a O.S. BGX engine, weighs 18 pounds and has functional flaps, pilot and cargo doors. The plane had its first successful flight a few days later. PPRCC Newsletter 5
Jefco Auction Mystery Plane Item - IV Lionel Calvin s Flyzone Sensei Back in February when I went to the Jefco Auction, I saw this plane, not sure what it was and quite unique looking, I posted it in the March newsletter. Well one of the club s observant readers, Mike Weidner, knew exactly what it was and ed me. He said that it is called a Hiperbipe. Thanks Mike! The Hiperbipe picture that I posted in the March newsletter. Three plan view of the Hiberpipe. Lionel said he enjoys flying his Sensei but had to replace the stock electric motor with a more powerful electric motor. Now he really enjoys it. The plane has a 58 ws and equipped with exceptionally sturdy landing gear. PPRCC Newsletter 6
So, What is This Airplane? Item - V Howard Hanks Park Zone Sea Fury Clue #1: This was the United States first monoplane given the B for Bomber designation. Clue #2: During its prime in life, it was faster than any bi-plane fighter built at that time. Clue #3: Only eight were built, they started out as bombers, converted to observation planes and ended its career as mail carriers during the 1930 s. Last month s airplane was a French Potez 75. Both Tom McCallum and Joe Jacobson replied with the correct, well descriptive answer. Tom sent his response in a PDF format, so I had no room to post it. Here is Joe s answer; The Potez 75 was developed by the reformed Potez Company which had originally been formed by Henry Potez in Designed as a light ground attack pusher configuration monoplane of the 1950s.The aircraft first flew on 10 June 1953 with experimental registration F-ZWSA, but later as F- WGVK and finally as the military F-MAFY. It had four 7.5 mm guns in the lower nose and could carry eight under-wing rockets. It was tested by the French military and found unsatisfactory as missile platform. It was modified to light ground attack configuration and tested in Algerian War. It excelled in such role and orders were placed for 15 pre-production and 100 production machines in This order was canceled the following year as part of defence budget cuts. The aircraft was exhibited at the May 1957 Paris Air Show. The aircraft was subsequently used as liaison aircraft and scrapped after crash landing on 16 September Howard purchased this complete Ready-to- Fly Hawker Sea Fury for only $ It has a 36 ws, weighs 30 ounces, a 480 electric motor and retracts. Howard hopes to get it up in the air for the first time in the near future. PPRCC Newsletter 7
Last of the Aviation Humor By Howard Hanks Item - VI Wayne Cooksey s Golden Era 60 A student pilot became lost on his first solo crosscountry flight. While attempting to locate the aircraft on radar, ATC asked what was your last know position? The student pilot replied, When I was number one for take-off. As Scale As it Gets! Ad sent in by Greg Banas Club member Greg Banas sent me this a few weeks ago, If you fly a RC plane that had an Allison or Rolls Royce engine, then this could be the scale engine that you are looking for! The Klassen F-110 Widowmaker is a miniature replica of an Allison or Rolls Royce engine, It has 12 functional exhaust ports, weighs 11 pounds and has an output rating of rpm. It can spin a prop from a 25x12 to a 26x10. For a cool $5,000, this engine could be in your Mustang, Warhawk or Lancaster bomber! Wayne built this plane from plans. Similar looks to a Gee Bee, it has a foamboard wing, 21 st Century covering, powered by a GMS.76 engine and weighs just over 7 pounds. Wayne has not flown the plane yet. PPRCC Newsletter 8
Show & Sell Ben Woofter s Assorted Items Item - VII Duane Zinke s Extreme Chinook Ben brought in assorted items for sale, ranging from two and four stroke engines, to receivers, to electronic speed controls. As you can see, he made a few sales! Support Your Local Hobby Store! Do you have a story, article or a photo that you would like to share with the club? Then get it to me at: Lkdavis03@hotmail.com Keith Davis PPRCC Newsletter Editor Support Your Local Hobby Store! Duane acquired this plane from friend Wayne and decided to remove 2 of the 3 engines (Blue patches) and go back to a single-engine airplane. But he kept the tri-tail! The plane now has a single OS.65 engine and weighs 9 pounds. PPRCC Newsletter 9
90 Days Away! Item - VIII Duane Zinke s Hybird Husky 120 Days Away! 120 Days Away! Duane s second plane that he brought in was his version of an A-1 Husky, including the oversized tires. It has been repaired due to a recent mishap and has not flown since the repairs. The Husky weighs just over 6 pounds. PPRCC Newsletter 10
Speed World Jet Rally Pictures by Duane Zinke This past February, Speed World Arizona held its annual jet rally in which a few of our club members attended. Duane Zinke went along as crew support, took dozens of pictures and was kind enough to send me a few of them. Thanks Duane! Club members Larry Laughlin, Dan Brunson and Greg Moore flew their jets in the weekend gathering and it looks like they had a great time. I don t know all of the details of the event, but as they say, a picture says a thousand words! A DC-10 conducts a low pass. The jet looks so real, you would think that you were at the JFK airport! Dan and Larry discuss aerodynamics, global warming and politics between flights. Not really, they are just having a good time out there! A pair of Me-262 s sits patiently on the tarmac. I m sure many WWII bomber pilots would have preferred to see them that way too! Greg prepares his Flash for the next round of jet excitement. Similar looks to the Northrop F-20 Tigershark, the Flash and the Ultra Flash is a popular model in the jet community. If you have ever seen Larry fly his F-18 Hornet before, then you know how impressive this looks in the sky as well as on the ground. Larry now owns two F-18 Hornets. PPRCC Newsletter 11
