Meeting Started: 7:00 pm Meeting Adjourned: 8:35 pm Members Attended: 33 Visitors: 0 Old Business: 1) Club President Ben Woofter, informed everyone about all the new equipment now out at the airfield; new tables, new plane restraints and new safety fences. 4) Club member Rick Paquin, reminded everyone not to forget about the upcoming PPRCC Scale Fly- In, taking place on Sunday, July 18 th. All scale type aircraft are welcome. See Rick if you have any questions. New Business: 1) Club Treasurer Frank Tuxworth, discussed May's finances. May was an expensive month because of the field maintenance bills and the annual property bill payment due in May. 2) Frank also gave a special thanks to several club members for the extra work they did in the past few weeks, preparing the airfield for summer flying. 3) Club member Kirby Stafford, said that he was given several RC airplanes and he would like to give them away for free. If interested give him a call. Airplane Funnies... Submitted by: Andy Arson 2) Club Vice President Gus Grissom, continued the discussion about the PPRCC scholarship program. He suggested that a better program may be to make an annual donation to the Restoration Facility. Gus will continue to research the idea and have more information at the next club meeting for club members to discuss and a possible vote. 3) Club member Larry Laughlin, talked about the exciting times he had at the Fort Collins Jet Rally last month. Larry then discussed some of the unresolved issues regarding the upcoming PPRCC Warbirds over Pikes Peak. Larry is this year s CD for the PPRCC Warbirds over Pikes Peak. We couldn t find any fireworks for the show, but we found Harry s jet in the back of his truck and full of fuel, hope he doesn t mind! PPRCC Newsletter 1

2 All About Civilian Birds projects, but Boeing dropped the idea of a steam aero-engine in Price later worked for Lockheed where his experience with developing compact burners for steam boilers helped to design Lockheed's first jet engine. The Besler Steam Plane You ve heard of planes running on gas and electric, but here s a story from Wikipedia about this unique powered airplane. A Travel Air 2000 biplane made the world's first piloted flight under steam power over Oakland, California, on 12 April 1933.The strangest feature of the flight was its relative silence; spectators on the ground could hear the pilot when he called to them from mid-air. The advantages of the "Besler System" that were claimed at the time included the elimination of audible noise and destructive vibration, greater efficiency at low engine speeds and also at high altitudes where lower air temperatures assisted condensation, reduced likelihood of engine failure, reduced maintenance costs, reduced fuel costs, since fuel oil was used in place of petrol, reduced fire hazard since the fuel was less volatile and operating temperatures were lower, and a lack of need for radio shielding. For capacities in excess of 1000 horse power a turbine captures the energy released by the expansion of steam more efficiently than a piston. However, the steam reciprocating engine turned out to be unsuitable for scaling up to the needs of large aircraft. The Besler Steam plane makes the cover of July 1933 Popular Science magazine. The aircraft, piloted by William Besler, had been fitted with a two-cylinder, 150 hp reciprocating engine. An important contribution to its design was made by Nathan C. Price, a former Doble Steam Motors engineer. Price was working on highpressure compact engines for rail and road transport; the purpose of the flight was to obtain publicity or this work. For those who have a JR radio system, here s how to set up the JR radio for dual-rudder airbrakes. By the end of the meeting, they were all gone. Gus Gustafson describes his brand new 72 wingspan Ultimate Bi-plane. Its just waiting for a few more parts and it will be ready for its first flight. 4 What s Your CG? By Romi Lucas By definition the aerodynamic wing of an airplane includes the area inside the fuselage whether you have a plug-in or one-piece wing. The aerodynamic root chord is always on the centerline of the fuselage.if you have plug-in wings you will have to extend it to the fuselage centerline on paper to find the aerodynamic root chord. 7. Extend a line from the point where the 25% chord line crosses the mac to the side of the fuselage. 8. Measure forward from this line (7) to the wing LE (parallel to the root chord). This is the distance that you will balance your airplane i.e. the 25%mac C.G. (or whatever percent that you chose). So if all the steps are done correctly, you should be able to determine your CG on almost any model that you build from scratch, from a kit or an ARF. Show & Tell Part II If you have plans use them for this exercise. Note the scale of the drawing and check to be sure of the scale. If plans drawings aren t available, you will have to measure your wing, fuse thickness, etc then put them on a drawing. If making a new drawing, do it at ¼ or ½ scale. Of course your have to multiply the result by 4 or 2 to get the C.G. location. For the following exercise don t include rounded or swept tips. Draw a line at the tip that is parallel to the root chord for these purposes. Duane Zinke talks about his 1976 kit PT-40 that he saved from a fire. One of his friends was burning all of his old planes and Duane rescued the nearly doomed airplane! 1. Draw a line connecting the root and tip chords at the 50% points. 2. Draw another line connecting the root and tip chords at the 25% points (or whatever percentage mac that you want to use for the C.G. but somewhere between (25% and 30%). 3. Draw a line equal to the length of the tip chord to the LE of the root chord. 4. Draw a line equal to the length of the root chord to the TE of the tip chord. 5. Connect the ends of the extension lines (3) and (4) with a line. 6. At the point where the diagonal line of (5) crosses the 50% chord line is where the wing mac is located. Draw a line through this point from the LE to the TE. This is your mac (mean aerodynamic chord). Romi Lucas displays another one of his unique scratch - built designs. This one is called the Dagger. 5 Warbirds Over Denver Even though the weather was not the greatest on the weekend of June 12 th and 13th, Jefco still held its Warbirds Over Denver event. A few of our very own club members came out to brave the cold and the rain to try and get a few flights in. Just as PPRCC member Larry Laughlin began putting his P-47 together, the rains came back! PPRCC members Dan Brunson, Duane Zinke and James Murphy waiting for a bit of sunshine. A Denver flyer taxi s his P-51 Mustang into position for a wet take-off. PPRCC member Rick Paquin stays dry under the tent while a Denver flyer preps his P-47. Despite the weather, pilots did get out and fly when the rain stopped and the sun tried to break through. But that only lasted a few minutes at a time and the rain forced pilots to land early and park under their tents until the showers past. That s how it went pretty much through the entire weekend. There were some very impressive RC models out there, from WWI, WWII and modern day airplanes. Pueblo club members Duane and Sam prepare their P-51 Mustang for its first flight of the day. 6 Show & Tell Part III One More Clean-Up Day A last minute decision was made to have one more clean-up day before the PPRCC warbird event. With all the recent heavy rains, the grass had to be cut one more time, the shed needed cleaning and the east runway still needed the safety barriers in place. Rick Paquin displays another one of his fine modifications of a Hanger 9 P-47 Thunderbolt. This plane is powered by a CRRC Pro 50 gas engine. So, What is this Airplane? Rick, Glen and Buddy. About 12 PPRCC members came out to help complete the final touches on the field before the big weekend; Ben, Larry, Dan, Frank, Rick, Kevin, Buddy, Chuck, Murphy, Glen, Gus and myself. It was a small crowd, but everyone did their part. Chuck and Dan (he s way back there!) It only took just a few hours, but we finished the job and it now the field looks pretty darn good! And with great weather predicted for the warbird weekend, we expect to have a great time out there. Just keep off the grass! (Just joking!) Clue #1: In 1953, this Italian fighter was selected as NATO s weapon of choice for all NATO Air Forces. Clue #2: Over 756 of these fighters were built and remained in service for over 35 years, primarily with the Portuguese Air Force. Last month s airplane was a British built Saunders- Roe S.R A/1. Bill Sanderman had the correct answer. Bill sure knows his one-of-a-kind seaplane jet fighters that flew over 50 years ago! Murphy, Kevin, Larry and Gus. 7 Warbirds Over Pikes Peak Well, another PPRCC Warbirds over Pikes Peak event can go in the history books as being successful. We didn t get all the rain like Denver did the week before at their warbird event, but we did get all the wind, both days! But that didn t stop the nearly 60 pilots from showing up from around the state to fly and display their planes, jets and helicopters. The flying started early Saturday morning and ended early Sunday afternoon because of the high winds. In addition, an AMA photographer from District IX, came out to visit and took plenty of great pictures too. He encourages everyone to view the new AMA District IX website at: AMA District IX covers the states of CO, KS, NE, ND, SD and WY. Larry Laughlin the CD, had a few closing remarks on Sunday, thanking everyone for their participation and support. After that, the awards were given out: People s Choice Award: Duane Zinke (A-20) Pilot s Choice Award: Duane from Pueblo (P-51) Best Show Award: Ryan from Denver (F-20 jet) Best Electric: 1 st Place Randy Oswald (PT-22) 2 nd Place Curt Hughes (P-47 Thunderbolt) Best Jet: 1 st Place Larry Laughlin (F-18 Hornet) 2 nd Place Dan Brunson (F-15 Eagle) Best Large Scale: 1 st Place Jim Terry (Sopwith Pup) 2 nd Place Dale Stakel (Fokker DVII) Best Small Scale: 1 st Place James Murphy (F8F Bearcat) 2 nd Place John Fay (F4U Corsair) Spectators enjoyed the close-up look at the highly-detailed airplanes. The club s unofficial photographer, Rod Hart, took nearly 300 spectacular photos of the two-day event, so you ll have to view them all on the club s website. Best Multi-Engine: 1 st Place Keith Davis (Me-110 Destroyer) 2 nd Place Joe Gilbert (UV-18 Twin Otter) And finally, we have to give a special thanks to Bette H. While we were out flying and having fun, she roamed the airfield, both days picking up litter, helping to keep the runways clear from debris blown by the wind. Thanks Bette!
