Visitors: 0 New Business: Old Business: 1) Club President Kevin Kinzel, said the club has ordered a pallet of asphalt sealer and is still planning to have a field maintenance day when the weather gets warmer. You re Having a Bad day when... 1) Club President Kevin Kinzel, stated that in recent weeks, usually on Sundays, club members have been gathering together out at the airfield and started up informal barbecues for lunch. Kevin said that is a great idea and the invitation is open to all. If it is decided to have a barbecue that day, 2 or 3 people will drive out to the local supermarket and purchase food and start the cookout around noontime. However, you may have to bring your own condiments or specific items that you may like. 2) Club Treasurer Adam Heffington, did not attend the April meeting so there was not a finance report for the month of March. 3) Club Safety Officer Rick Paquin, informed everyone that there was a rash of airplane crashes last month because of flight control failures. Make sure that you check those flight controls before each flight! You just bought your first trainer yesterday, flew it today and will be buying your second trainer tomorrow. PPRCC Newsletter 1

Show & Tell Item - I Wayne Cooksey s and Duane Zinke s Negotiators Duane s Negotiator is powered by an O.S. LA.40 engine and weighs about 4-5 pounds. It has not flown yet. Wayne (left) and Duane (right) brought in their joint project, scratch-built Negotiators. Both planes were cut from the same plans, made from foamboard, has a 55 wingspan and took about two weeks to build. The only big differences is that Wayne and Duane added their own personal touches to them. Both planes are similar in shape and size but completely different in personal styles. Great job gentlemen! Wayne s Negotiator is powered by an O.S. FP.40 engine and weighs about 3-4 pounds. It has not flown yet. PPRCC Newsletter 2

All About Military Birds This article was a popular that was sent to me several times from our club members, so I decided it was time to post it in the newsletter and share with others. Pretty interesting story... for "maintenance" or "liaison" duties. They would then return to Normandy with full beer kegs fitted under the wings. Typically, the British Revenue of Ministry and Excise stepped in, notifying the brewery that they were in violation of the law by exporting beer without paying the relevant taxes. It seems that Mod. XXX was terminated then, but various squadrons found different ways to refurbish their stocks. Most often, this was done with the unofficial approval of higher echelons. In the lighter moments of World War II, the Spitfire was used in an unorthodox role: bringing beer kegs to the men in Normandy. During the war, the Heneger and Constable brewery donated free beer to the troops. After D-Day, supplying the invasion troops in Normandy with vital supplies was already a challenge. Obviously, there was no room in the logistics chain for such luxuries as beer or other types of refreshments. Some men, often called "sourcers", were able to get wine or other niceties "from the land" or rather from the locals. Ground crews arm a Spitfire with a few kegs of beer. In his book "Dancing in the Skies", Tony Jonsson, the only Icelancer pilot in the RAF, recalled beer runs while he was flying with 65 Squadron. Every week a pilot was sent back to the UK to fill some cleaned-up drop tanks with beer and return to the squadron. Jonsson hated the beer runs as every man on the squadron would be watching you upon arrival. Anyone who made a rough landing and dropped the tanks would be the most hated man on the squadron for an entire week. Spitfire loaded up with beer for the troops. RAF Spitfire pilots came up with an even better idea. The Spitfire Mk IX was an evolved version of the Spitfire, with pylons under the wings for bombs or tanks. It was discovered that the bomb pylons could also be modified to carry beer kegs. According to pictures that can be found, various sizes of kegs were used. Whether the kegs could be jettisoned in case of emergency is unknown. If the Spitfire flew high enough, the cold air at altitude would even refresh the beer, making it ready for consumption upon arrival. A variation of this was a long range fuel tank modified to carry beer instead of fuel. The modification even received the official designation Mod. XXX. Propaganda services were quick to pick up on this, which probably explains the "official" designation. Beer delivery on its way to the front lines. In his book "Typhoon Pilot", Desmond Scott also recalls Typhoon drop tanks filled with beer but regretted that it acquired a metallic taste. Less imaginative techniques involved stashing bottles wherever space could be found on the aircraft, which included the ammunition boxes, luggage compartment or even in parts of the wing, with varying results. Champagne bottles in particular did not react well to the vibrations they were submitted to during such bootlegging trips. As a result, Spitfires equipped with Mod XXX or kegcarrying pylons were often sent back to Great Britain PPRCC Newsletter 3

So, What is This Airplane? 60 Days Away! 90 Days Away! This was another unknown airplane that I saw at the Jefco Auction back in February. I didn t know what it was, so I was determined to find out what it was and then use it as this month s mystery airplane. Good luck! 90 Days Away! Clue #1: This airplane dominated air-racing in the UK and consistently recorded the fastest times until the outbreak of WWII, which stopped all civilian flying in late Clue #2: It was hidden in France from the Germans during WWII, rebuilt many times and now essentially a replica, G-AEXF still flies to this day in the UK. last month s airplane was a Douglas B-7 or 0-35 That must have been a tough one because I didn t receive any guesses on that one! 5 Show & Tell Item - II Frank Miller s Decal Pro Designer High Tec Field Box As I was browsing the web looking for more airplane pictures, I ran across this ad from Slimline. To keep up with the times, Slimline has developed a high tec field box, made of heavy duty fiberglass, a digital readout gauge and a glow plug docking station. Frank sets up his Decal Pro Designer equipment and then proceeded to talk about his product. So throw out that old wooden field box that you have had for years and grown accustom to, and head down to Pikes Peak Hobbies and order one of these! Do you have a story, article or a picture that you would like to share with the club? Get it to me at: If you ever wanted to make your own fuel-proofed nose art, decals or lettering, here s your chance! PPRC s newest club member Frank Miller, has a small business in selling equipment to make your own stick-on transfers. If interested, Frank s contact info can be found in the above flyer. 6 Test Flight Jitters! As simple as those rules may sound, those are the top 5 reasons why most crashes happen on that first test flight. If you can remember to do those steps, there shouldn t be any surprises once the plane gets into the air. Have a good flight! Your forehead begins to sweat, your mouth gets dry, and your hands may even begin to shake. No, it s not because you are going on your first date, it s because you are getting ready to do a test flight! Why do so many pilots get the jitters when they are about to fly one of their new planes for the first time? Well it could be because of many reasons but the most common reasons are; not knowing what the plane is going to do once it leaves the ground, time and effort put into the plane and don t want to lose it on its first flight, a crowd may be watching or an inexperienced pilot attempting his own test flight. This crash was a result of reversed aileron controls on its very first flight. The Smallest RC Helicopter? If everything is properly set on the radio and on the plane, it should do exactly what you want it to do, fly! The best thing that you can do to help alleviate most of the first flight jitters is to remember these 5 things: 1) Make sure that you start out with your radio trims (except maybe the throttle trim) and airplane flight controls in neutral. Once airborne, you may need as much trim as possible to keep the plane level. 2) Make sure the radio stick controls match the airplane flight controls. Reversed flight controls can make the first flight very exciting. 3) Make sure the CG is what the manual calls for or close to it. A tail-heavy airplane can be just as exciting to fly as a plane with reversed flight controls. 4) Double check that those wing bolts are installed! 5) Take someone with you. They can calm you down, help with the trims or possibly recover the plane if you get into trouble. Could this be the smallest RC electric helicopter in the world? Back in the June 2011 newsletter (page 2), I posted a picture of what could possibly be the smallest RC airplane that has ever been built. Well I think I just found a picture of what could possibly be the smallest electric RC helicopter that has ever been built. If you think that you have a picture of a RC helicopter smaller than this, send it to me! PPRCC Newsletter 6

Northern Colorado Swap Meet I happen to make it up to Loveland last month to visit the 2 nd annual swap meet that took place on Saturday. It wasn t as big as the Jefco auction but it was held in a gym size facility with about 50 tables arranged for the sellers and venders to set up their items for sale. The advantage of the swap meet was the ability to talk directly to the sellers and work out a deal. They were selling new stuff, old stuff and on some tables, just stuff!! This A-10 combo set was selling pretty fast. The Northern Colorado Swap Meet is a fairly new event and as the word gets out, they expect bigger crowds in the future. An assortment of planes and parts for sale. With 2.4ghz radios becoming more popular, you could name your own price on a 72mhz radio. The first ever F-35 (front) that I have ever seen. This vender had planes, cars and boats to sell. PPRCC Newsletter 7

Marco s Winter Projects Club member Marco Zarategilmore, sent me a few pictures of his winter projects that he recently completed and brought out to the airfield last month. Marco bought the Seagull Tacano from a hobby store and was given the pre-owned Cessna 172 because of a crash it was involved in last year. This Cessna 172 was originally all white with pin striping. But after the crash, Marco rebuilt the plane then decided to go with USAF training colors. And if you see this plane out at the airfield, take a close look at the plane, you will notice panel lines and rivets that he also added for the final touch. Nice job on both planes Marco! Both planes have a 80 wingspan and powered by a gasoline engine. Marco brought both planes out to the airfield that day to break in the engines and complete a few test flights. Airfield Maintenance With the days getting warmer and getting closer to the club s big flying events, we can expect to have an airfield maintenance day real soon. The reason why I bring this up is to remind everyone that day is coming and we can use as many volunteers as possible to help out. The club has a new asphalt melter that will be put to good use and will need plenty of support to keep it going all day. In addition, mowing may be required, trash cans emptied and fences repaired. The more volunteers we get, the quicker we can get the job done. And don t forget, when the airfield maintenance day has been determined, for obvious safety reasons the airfield will be closed to flying for the day! Tucano meaning Tightwad or Cheapskate in Spanish, however there is nothing cheap about this plane. Marco installed a gas engine, air retracts, digital servos and two scale pilots. So you know this ARF ain t cheap! The real Embraer Tacano is built in Brazil and is a very popular airplane among military Air Forces throughout South America. Once the scheduled maintenance day has been identified, it will be announced at the club meeting, posted on the website and in the newsletter. From the club President Kevin Kinzel, Thanks in advance for those who plan on being there! PPRCC Newsletter 8

Gibraltar Traffic - Air and Land I received this from club member Greg Moore, this is one place that you don t want to run a redlight! Gibraltar International Airport (LXGB) is considered the fifth most dangerous airport in the world and the first most dangerous airport in Europe. Pilots have to contend with high winds blowing around the rock and vehicle traffic too. In 2008 construction has begun to build a traffic tunnel under the runway and a few roads to go around the runway. Gibraltar s main roadway, Winston Churchill Avenue, runs through the middle of Gibraltar s main runway. The stoplights are operated by the control tower and the normal wait time is about 10 minutes for a plane to land and clear the road. On a busy day, the road can be closed up to two hours. Built during WWII by the British, Gibraltar Airport is currently used by British Airways and the RAF. Spain and the UK are still disputing over the Rock. Fines are steep if caught running a redlight. 10 Armed Forces Day at Pueblo Pueblo Aircraft Museum President Del Milne, sent PPRCC an invitation to attend the Annual Armed Forces Day happening on Saturday, 19. I spoke with him on the phone and he gave me all the details. The one-day event is FREE to everyone, starts at 8:00 am with the posting of the Colors and ends at 5:30 pm with retreat of the Colors. There will be plenty of original jets, planes, vehicles and historic items on display. And on some of the aircraft you will be allowed to climb in and take a good look at the interior. In addition, the event will allow RC flyers to bring their RC planes (preferably military) and set them up for display. The event is for static displays only, no flying! Mr. Milne is not sure if it will be in Hanger 1 or in Hanger 2, but there will be plenty of room for all. If you decide to bring a plane, there is no sign-up list or pre-registration, just show up by 8:00 am. And did I mention that it s FREE? I plan on attending the event and bringing one or two planes. If you are interested in going and would like to know more, contact me. Keith Davis Lkdavis03@hotmail.com The Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum is located next to the Pueblo Airport. It s about a 45 minute drive from Colorado Springs. PPRCC Newsletter 10

Spring Pilots in April April turned out to be a pretty good month of flying despite the cool mornings and breezy days at times. (as the weathermen calls it!). There were lots of new pilots and lots of new planes, all set to take advantage of the descent April weather. Adam assists Murphy in setting up his Ultimate Bipe as Gus and Greg looks on. The east side pit area stayed busy almost every weekend. Larry lines up his Duelist for landing as Dan observes. Ben was busy training Joe while Eric practiced inverted flight with his U Can Do.40. Jose completes final checks before take-off. Very good idea! Gus preps his new F-86 Dog Sabre for flight. Greg Moore and Rod Hart also owns one of these highly detailed jets. Adam wastes no time in getting his plane ready. PPRCC Newsletter 11
