2 TRANSFORMATION OF PRODUCTION PROCESSES The automotive sector stands on the threshold of long-term changes which will not stop at the doors of the assembly line. The need for greater adaptability and flexibility will be especially apparent in final assembly. Alternative drive systems and an accelerating trend towards ever more customised product variants make it inevitable that traditional assembly processes will soon be replaced. But what will these new, flexible and adaptable assembly processes look like in practice for automobile manufacturers? What features will state-of-the-art logistics concepts require to accommodate adaptable assembly processes? Which technologies and automation tools can we use to support assembly? By integrating the BMW inext and a purely electric vehicle, all drive systems are to be manufactured simultaneously on the same line and under processes which are both flexible and efficient.
