One part of the project was the development of a high power (20-25kW) 48V electric machine and inverter designed to fit into a DCT (dual clutch transmission), carried out in collaboration with Daimler and Renault. The e Machine is a frameless 6 phase 8 pole IPM motor with oil cooling and novel hairpin windings. The motor (and an accompanying inverter) was designed, built and tested by Ricardo. The motor was designed to fit into the same space as an existing 15kW induction design. This paper discusses some of the design challenges encountered and how they were addressed. After being involved in the development and production of pouch type laminated (PoLiFlex) Li-Ion cells at Varta for five years, Prof. Birke joined Continental AG in Berlin in 2005, first as a project leader in energy-storage systems. He became senior technical expert in battery technology and team leader in cell technology, and in 2010 was appointed Head of Battery Module and Electromechanics. Prof. Birke has 23 years of experience in research, development, and production of energy storage systems with a focus on Li-Ion technology. Since 2015 he has been a full Professor at the University of Stuttgart, covering the field of Electrical Energy Storage Systems. Dr Eddie Wearing / Chief Engineer, Ricardo Innovations Business Unit / Ricardo UK Ltd. Dr Wearing joined Ricardo in 2013, initially in the Hybrids Product Group, before moving across to Ricardo Innovations. His background is in the design, building and testing of electric machines for numerous applications from military and aerospace to food mixers and windscreen wipers, and has designed most types of motor. He also has significant experience in manufacturing, at both junior and senior level. Benno Koeppl / Infineon Technologies AG studied Physics at TU Munich 3 years Airbag development at Autoliv Dachau since 1997 Siemens / Infineon Technologies: Application engineer for low voltage ATV drives Stephen Voller is an experienced entrepreneur and business leader with 25 years of experience of running technology companies from start-up to IPO. He has raised over $100m for these companies, which included an IPO for a hydrogen fuel cell company which he founded. This company used a fuel cell as a range extender or battery charger. In 2004 he developed the world s first commercial CE certified proton exchange membrane PEM fuel cell generator based on metal hydride and compressed hydrogen fuel. Stephen has a degree in Data Processing from the University of Leeds, is a Chartered Engineer, and is a Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
