2 The age of software What if we have a new class of electric premium/luxury cars driven mainly by software development? Electricity is simplicity is speed. Thus, if we want to play on this market we better learn more about electrification. Fast Charging is considered as one of the main challenges of electromobility. Wireless charging solves the cable issues and may also contribute to range. 2
3 Wireless (automated) charging Induction has gained momentum fast, simple-to-use charging It s robust, straightforward to integrate and quite exciting The technology has been demonstrated. It works. Charging is automated, as is the power grid connection The efficiency of air-transfer is still considered as an important bottleneck Leaking electromagnetic fields may also be important 3
4 Wireless charging - State of art Several experiment systems (demos), including VCG (20kW). Aftermarket option: US$4000 per unit including installation Si-based switching devices (IGBTs, diodes) Transmission frequency: 20kHz System efficiency (grid-batteries): 80-85% Weight: 17-27kg (3-7kg in vehicle; 3.3kW) Outlook 352,000 units to be sold by 2020 (Frost & Sullivan 2014) Built-in as option in premium cars Europe will be the market leader (BMW, Daimler, Volvo, + strong suppliers) Public charging 20kW in near future Dynamic charging after
5 Goals: efficiency and standardization Efficiency: SiC technology is Enabling technology High switching frequency higher IPT power density Low switching losses high efficiency in rectifier and inverter High temperature reduced size, weight, and easy cooling and packaging High blocking voltage higher operating voltage and lower current Goal: 93% efficiency for a 3.3kW system (similar to cable charging) Standardization, scaling: Main industrial goal: integrate and optimize design for future products. Focus on scalability allow different senders and receivers, and scaled power utilizing standardization. 5
6 Industrial approach VCG will integrate and test both an available receiver and a SiC receiver from chalmers. Test will be performed with an available and a SiC sender from chalmers. Model Driven Research, Development and Verification is standard Transparency is crucial Integrate hw & sw Ev. platform integration New product (top hat) Platform (baseline) 6
7 Research approach Chalmers will, within the PhD project, conduct theoretical and experimental studies, primarily focusing on SiC technology. VCG provide test objects, with integrated receivers. Chalmers will construct SiC based sender and receiver FEM simulations Inductance Coil resistance Skin effect Litz wire 7
