The best which were in short supply still sold very well to a top of 2200 for a Pedigree heifer from Messrs B Rose & Son of Sturminster Newton. Non pedigree heifers to 2140 and 2000 for Messrs ET Summerfield & Son of Oxford; 2100 for Nick Goss, Devizes; 2020 Messrs J & H Snook; 2020 and 1940 for Mr JC Palmer, Chumleigh and 2000 for Mr A Witcombe. Cows to 1680 Mr D Tottle and 1640 Mr J Snook. The trade proved much more difficult compared to previous weeks for 2 nd quality cows and heifers, probably reflecting the effects of the continued dry weather and the payment of Lady Day rent cheques. An electric calf trade, when 2 week old Holstein Friesians sold to 380 x 3 for Messrs DE & WM Headon, Barnstaple. 340 x 2 Mr RJ Shere, who also had Jersey calves to 170 and Brown Swiss x calves at 190. An excellent entry of 963 store cattle, part of a total entry of 1342 with stirks, met another cracking spring trade. Top was 1420 for the best of an outstanding run of Blue steers (all 20m) from Messrs R & E Baker & Son, Cannington, when others from the same farm achieved 1400, 1380, 1380, 1355, 1285 and The forty two averaged Other Blue steers to 1335 (25m) from Messrs D & P Mead Co, Weston Super Mare and 1215 (23m) was received by Messrs RS Chapman & Son. Simmental steers topped at 1275 (23/24m) for two grand feeders from Messrs HK & S Cligg, Axminster. Another to 1170 (24m) from Messrs MB & A Jordan, Berkeley. Charolais steers sold to 1240 for a good half meat type (19m) from Messrs JC & PA Chapple, Axminster. A good run from Messrs RH & GA Morrish Ltd, Torrington peaked at 1228 for a 19m Charolais steer, who sold another (21m) at A forward 23m Charolais from Messrs D Wyatt & Son, Axminster met a call of 1168 and hard grazing Charolais steers (23/26m) from Messrs McEwen Smith achieved Forward Limousin steers (23m & FA) from Messrs Hutton & Sons rose to Limousins (21/22m & FA) from Messrs RH & GA Morrish, Torrington again sold well at 1175, who also had Blue steers (22/23m) at Messrs RH & GA Morrish also sold a Simmental steer (21m) at An excellent show of native cattle for the special sale peaked at 1310 for a 26m & FA Angus by Woodington Barrister from Mr GG Dyer, Chard, who sold other Angus steers at was bid for a fit overage Hereford steer from Mr AD Lee, Wellington, who sold others 24m at A well grown 23m Devon (FA) from Messrs D & P Mead & Co, Weston Super Mare again achieved More Angus steers (22/23m) from Mr D Gibbins, Glastonbury rose to 1240 twice, 1235 and 1130; from Mr David Luff, Weston Super Mare (FA) at 1205 (24m) 1135 (23/24m) and 1125 (24m); from Mr RH Beaty, Street at 1170 (23/24m and ¾ meat); from Messrs W & A Kingston, Weston Super Mare at 1145 (18m) and Mr PA Kingston, Crewkerne at 1135 (21m). Other Hereford steers to 1155 (20m) from Mr CR Dare, Taunton and Shorthorn steers rose to 1115 (22m & FA) from Messrs RH & GA Morrish, Torrington again, when another Shorthorn steer (overage) from Mr PA Kingston, Crewkerne again achieved Black and white steers topped at 1030 for typy, dark HF, being ½ meat from Messrs RS Chapman & Son, Ilminster, who sold bigger framed types at 950. Others around 1000 at 1015 (overage) and 1012 (24/29m & FA) 995 (28m & FA) from Messrs D & P Mead & Co, Weston Super Mare again; 1010 (24m & FA) The Mowlem Partnership, Chard and 990 (overage) from Messrs J Jones & Son, Bath. Some medium and smaller black and whites a touch easier than of late. All steers averaged an outstanding 907, the first time over 900 ever! Heifers topped at 1180 for a fleshed Devon (27m & FA) from Messrs D & P Mead again. A fit Blue heifer (18m) from Messrs JC & PA Chapple, Axminster achieved Other strong Blue heifers sold well at 1145 (20m, very shapely and very lean) from Messrs RJ & PJ Northover, Dorchester; 1075 (23m) Messrs PC & CJ Cox, Plymouth and 1035 (25m & FA) Messrs D & P Mead & Co again. Simmental heifers rose to 1160 (22m & FA) from Messrs HK & S Cligg, Axminster again, who sold others (23/24m) at Others at 1055 (24m, FA & fit) from Messrs RH & GA Morrish; 1035 (24m, FA & fit) from Messrs JH & MB Jewell, Taunton and 1030 (20/21m) Mr PA Kingston, Crewkerne. Forward Limousin heifers from Mr HR Hutton, Bristol (FA) sold well at 1070 (21m) and 1065 (25m). Messrs Hutton & Sons, also Bristol, sold two smart Limousins at Others (23/24m) from Mr A Wheeler, Torrington achieved 1060 and Messrs DH & SM Churchill, Axminster (21m & FA) at Charolais heifers topped at 1055 (23m, FA & fit) again from Messrs RH & GA Morrish, who sold others 19/23m at Others at 1050 (23m) Mr A Wheeler again, also of Torrington and 1025 (21m & fit) from Mr PA Kingston again. Other native heifers, part of the special native sale sold to 1025 twice for Angus (23/24m & fit) from Mr RH Beaty, Street and another Angus (23m & FA) from Messrs JJ & SM Spiller, Ilminster. All heifers averaged a very credible 765. Young stores in great demand, reflecting the high quality on offer. Notable prices were 1155 for 7 exceptional Simmental steers (12/14m & FA) from Messrs FA & EM Hill Ltd, Exeter, who sold others 10m at 952. Absolute top drawer red Limousin steers from Mr WJ Bown, Bridgwater met ready demand at 1105 (13m) 1100 (13m) 1075 (12m) 970 (12m) and 925 (13m). 6 11/12m suckler bred Charolais from Messrs BL & MJE Bartlett, Bridgwater sold well at 1050, when others from the same farm sold at 985 and 962. Superb Limousin steers from Miss P Curry achieved 985 (11m) 955 (10m) 950 (9m) and 910 (10/11m x 6). Young heifers rose to 935 (11/12m) for Charolais from Mr BL & MJE Bartlett, what a trade!

Feeding of Calves Calf Vendors are reminded that all calves should be fed prior to being sent to market. The Local Veterinary Inspectors (LVI) acting for Defra Animal Health have advised us that any calf being presented empty or showing symptons of distress due to under nourishment, will be issued a notice under the Welfare of Animals at Market Order (1990), instructing us to feed the calf with an energy supplement to sustain it during its stay at market and any subsequent transport. Any costs incurred will be deducted from the Vendors sales. Lambs weaned or near to were 30 plus with smaller sorts each. Overall average Vendors are advised to ensure their 2012 born lambs, sold at foot, as orphans or as store lambs, have at least a single electronic flock tag. This will enable Purchasers to upgrade ewe lambs if required and facilitate subsequent on movements for all, thereby ensuring maximum buyer support. Any ewe lambs sold for breeding or ewes born in 2011 will require double tags, one being Electronic, with both displaying flock and full individual number.
