6 INTRODUCTION PAGE 4 Gemini White Suffolk stud was established in 1993 by introducing White Suffolk rams to put over ewes from our previously registered Suffolk stud. We have always maintained a strong focus on commercial attributes relevant to industry demands and client profitability. Selection for higher growth and carcase yield through increased muscling improves productivity, while selection for easy care shape and sound structure results in lower costs and more live lambs on the ground. We use a combination of visual classing and high performance selection through Lambplan to produce some of the highest quality and performing prime lamb genetics available in today s meat sheep industry. In 2011 we commenced DNA testing for Hypotrichosis (Hr), a simple recessive gene disorder which has been present in the sheep industry in very low numbers since the early 1900s. This is only of limited concern in a situation where stock from a known carrier animal are retained for breeding as the gene may then be passed on, but both parents must be carriers before you have any chance of expression, and then only 1 in 4. That said though, we are determined to eliminate it from our flock. With a recently discovered DNA marker, producers are now able to identify the status of rams. All sheep in this catalogue are DNA tested free, or both the sire and dam have been DNA tested free for Hypotrichosis. Gemini Suffolk stud was established in 1990 with a foundation for stock from Cassie Downs Suffolk stud, this stud was used for the base of our White Suffolk stud. We stopped breeding suffolks for a number of years and re-established the stud in 2013 with a strong focus on structure and performance. Purchasing ewes from Allendale, Brechinridge and rams from Broughton Lodge. Gemini Poll Dorset stud is our newest stud established in This stud is heavily focus on performance and structure purchasing the foundation ewes from Derrynock and Kennedy Creek and using the best sires available through AI.
