2 GREENDALE MERINOS Greendale Merinos is a family owned and operated merino breeding business consisting of three properties based around Cooma in southern NSW. We currently mate 7000 ewes annually and use this ewe base to select a nucleus breeding flock. All ewes are measured and tested for all wool traits, fleece weights and body weights. Only the best performing 10 ewes make the nucleus flock. Our business is totally commercially focused aiming to produce the most efficient, productive and profitable Merino under paddock conditions. Greendale genetics are benchmarked to the merino industry using: Trials over 35 years of performance for production and profitability in more than 20 trials across NSW. With results that are unmatched by any other merino genetic source. ASBV s performance data has been entered into Merino Select for the past 13 years. Sire Evaluation Greendale sires have been entered in trials comparing their progenies performances to other merino industry genetics. Introduced Genetics Only genetics that has performance in all three benchmarking tools above are introduced using an annual AI programme. This focus on benchmarking genetics has driven the growth, profitability and sustainability of our business and our clients merino breeding businesses. 1.

4 Australian Sheep Breeding Values for the Greendale 2016 drop rams Greendale Merinos has been benchmarking our genetics across the industry through entry of sires into sire evaluations and using some outside sires to enable Greendale to present across flock Australian Breeding Values (ASBVs) for our sale rams. This year we are offering across flock ASBVs that will assist you with your ram selections. Trait Explanation Industry Average 21/8/2017 Yearling Fibre Diameter. A negative figure YFD in fibre diameter measured as a yearling at 300 days means the ram is carrying the genes to reduce fibre diameter at yearling age in its progency. ASBV is reported in microns. Greendale Sale Average YCFW YWT INDEX FP+ INDEX MP+ Yearling Clean Fleece Weight. A ram with a positive figure is more likely to produce progency with a higher fleece weight. ASBV shows difference in percentage of clean fleece weight. Yearling Bodyweight. Animals with a positive figure will produce lambs that grow faster. ASBV is reported in kilograms. FP+ is based on a wool focused production system where wethers are retained, operating in an environment where worms cause economic losses. Large reduction in fibre diameter, large increase in staple length, moderate reduction in WEC (if measured in the breeding program, small increase in body weight). MP+ is based on a balanced wool and meat production system where surplus progeny are sold as hoggets. Moderate increase in fleece weight, staple strength, carcass traits and reproduction, moderate reduction in fibre diameter
