1 October OFFICERS PRESIDENT JEFF MINX VICE PRESIDENT Don Cook SECRETARY Becky Field TREASURER JoAnn Martorano SGT. AT ARMS Sarah Talahongva MEMBER OF THE MONTH Hank, Carolyn, Samantha, Shelby, & Anthony Gallo 1989 ASC/McLaren Convertible Even though it lacks Ford or Mustang emblems, it started life as a special order "D32" from Ford. Starting with an LX Mustang coupe was built with carpets rolled up in the trunk, a GT front fascia and LX body trim deleted. Our car was built in January 1989 and shipped to American Sunroof Company in Michigan to start the conversion, which took 6 months. The base car was $11,000 and the McLaren conversion was about $13,000. The job included removing the roof, installing a manual convertible top, angling the windshield frame back an additional 10 degrees, lowering the car, special ground effects, new interior (without a back seat) and finishing the car with Sikkens paint from Holland. The 5.0 was left stock so it didn't require a new emissions certification. It was built without Ford badges so it could be sold through Mercury dealers. 247 of these were built in 1989 and ours is #176. We also owned #126 of 1015 built in 1988, but sold it a few years ago. So, who designed this style? Peter Muscat's wife worked at Ford in the early 1980's and used to drive her 2 seat Mercedes convertible to work. Ford decided you had to park a Ford in the company parking lot. Peter designed this style on an early 80's Capri so his wife could have Mercedes style on a Ford car. After working with ASC on some parts, they worked an agreement to where ASC could produce the cars and ship them to the selling Ford/Mercury dealer. A total of 1,806 ASC/McLaren Mustangs were built from 1987 through 1990.

13 Member of the month Cont. Our car currently has 192,000 miles on it having purchased it in 1999 from the second owner (with 74,000 miles). Most of the car including paint and engine are original and the transmission was rebuilt last year. We also have a 1985 Mustang GT that I purchased new in October Since getting the convertible, the '85 hasn't been driven much. It has 27,000 original miles. Samantha plans on driving it, after getting some experience another car for a year. She looks forward to getting her drivers permit next year and driving me to the Pavilions in the '89. Before the '85 I had a '69 Mach I and my first Mustang was a /2 260 V-8 I bought used in We joined Copperstate Mustang Club in 2000 and have been active in car shows, parades, displays and club functions ever since. We enjoy the camaraderie of an active Mustang club. No matter what time of year, there is an event taking place to bring the group together to share our cars, experiences and stories. If you are reading this article, and don't feel involved in the club-just come to an event and join us. Check the club web page ( for the latest information.
