1 September OFFICERS PRESIDENT (TEMPORARY) CAR OF THE MONTH: THE 10 MILLIONTH MUSTANG BECKY FIELD VICE PRESIDENT Phyllis Petrone SECRETARY Alyce Ancell TREASURER JoAnn Martorano SGT. AT ARMS Catherine Walrod DEARBORN Ford is celebrating the production of its 10 millionth Mustang America s bestselling sports car of the last 50 years and the world s best-selling sports car three years straight. The 10 millionth Ford Mustang is a high-tech, 460 horsepower 2019 Wimbledon White GT V8 sixspeed manual convertible equipped with the latest driver assist technology and built at Ford s Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan. The first serialized Mustang (VIN 001) produced in 1964 was the same color and model with a three-speed manual transmission and 164 horsepower V8. Mustang is the heart and soul of this company and a favorite around the world, said Jim Farley, president of global markets, Ford Motor Company. I get the same thrill seeing a Mustang roll down a street in Detroit, London or Beijing that I felt when I bought my first car a 1966 Mustang coupe that I drove across the country as a teenager. Mustang is a smile-maker in any language. Ford is celebrating the milestone with employee celebrations at its Dearborn headquarters and its Flat Rock Assembly Plant, including flyovers from three WWII-era P-51 Mustang fighter planes and Mustangs produced for more than five decades parading from Dearborn to Flat Rock, where the Mustang currently is manufactured. During its 54-year production history, Mustang also was built in San Jose, Calif., Metuchen, N.J., and the original Mustang production facility in Dearborn, Mich. Still America s best-selling sports car Mustang is America s best-selling sports car over the last 50 years, based on Ford analysis of total U.S. new vehicle cumulative registrations for all sports car segments supplied by IHS Markit. Better Than Ever The latest Ford Mustang offers more technology, exhilarating performance and more personalization than ever. The iconic Mustang Bullitt returns for the 2019 model year, with an exclusive 480-horsepower 5.0- liter V8 engine, plus distinctive design and trim. The classic California Special also returns with unique design and trim enhancements. All 5.0-liter V Mustangs with manual transmissions offer rev-matching downshifts come to the six-speed Mustang GT, while EcoBoost gets an optional quad-tip fully active exhaust. All-new custom-tuned 1,000-watt B&O PLAY high-performance sound system and available Apple Car- Play compatibility for Ford+Alexa and Waze via SYNC 3 will satisfy audiophiles. (continued on page 4)

5 TECHNICAL ARTICLES HOT WEATHER CAR CARE Submitted by Dan Martorano It s been a long and hot summer. Our ponies have felt it, just like we all have. It s time to check out the various systems in our cars. Certain parts on our cars wear more in the hot weather than at any other time of the year. Belts and hoses need to be inspected for soft spots and dry rot. (break down of the rubber). Radiators, anti-freeze and engine cooling components need a good visual inspection and fluid levels also need to be looked at. A friend recently went into a local business that does oil changes and minor repairs and discovered that they do not check fluid levels on components that do not have dipsticks, such as manual transmissions and rear-end differentials. Make sure that you use a shop that understands how to do the basics of maintenance on a vehicle. Tires and brakes take a beating in this hot weather and should be inspected often for cracks in sidewalls, and in between the threads. Brakes need to be checked for heat cracks on pads and shoes, look for leaks at each wheel location and check brake fluid level at the master cylinder. Remember if the brakes do not feel right, do not drive the car without checking out the above. The spare tire, the jack and associated tools should be checked out to make sure that they all function properly (check the air pressure in the spare tire). Also do you know where the key, or wheel lock is, in the car? Remember, there is nothing worse than having your car break down, especially if you re on the highway, going somewhere important, wait, what s worse is having your wife s car breaking down! CONVERTIBLE TOP CARE Submitted by Rich Cribben Many of us have Mustang convertibles, with vinyl tops and the plastic rear window. Some of our tops range in age from 52 to 54 years old. Most vinyl tops, respond well to products that provide protection from the sun, like Turtle Wax's F21 Super Protectant. However, it is the Rear Plastic Window that often is neglected. When I purchased my Mustang 20+ years ago, the owner had claimed the top was "almost new," but I found the rear window badly marred, with a dull fog appearance. The marring could have been easily avoided, if the owner had placed a long soft bath towel, between the folds of the window, when the top was lowered into the well. Years of vibration, took its toll. When I think back to that evening years ago, I remember the owner wobbling around and smelling like a very large Vodka Martini. But I digress... Since then, I found a way to clean the window inside and out effectively, with a minimum of effort. At least once a year, I take my old Sears Orbital Buffer, and place a soft cotton bonnet on it, containing a generous amount of Meguiar's "Plast X" clear plastic cleaner. With the top up and kneeling on the back seat, I place the buffer up against the window, and go back and forth the width of the window. I let it dry a while and with new soft bonnet, I buff the window clear. I then repeat the process on the exterior surface. The process is surprisingly easy and the results are very impressive.

6 CRUISIN GRAND - ESCONDIDO, CA Submitted by Kathy Sebesta One of the greatest ongoing traditions in San Diego County, Cruisin' Grand in Escondido runs every Friday for six spectacular months. This is a free event where more than 5000 visitors and car enthusiasts come each week to check out the 500+ cars lining the streets of historic downtown Escondido. Cruise nights run April through September from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Each week, the cruise spotlights different makes of cars. Mustang week started Friday, August 10, My husband and I drove our 09 GT convertible over there to check out all the stangs. There were quite a variety; mostly first gen, but also newer generations of Mustangs and Shelbys. In addition, the local Ford dealer had a new 2019 Mustang Bullitt there, with a sold sign already in the window!
