June OFFICERS PRESIDENT (TEMPORARY) BECKY FIELD VICE PRESIDENT John Christensen Member of the Month Bryan Dillard I never got to drive my first Mustang. My best friend and I were turning the age when it was time to start thinking about our 1 st car. We decided that we would both get Mustangs (Fall of 1980). My friend, Johnny and his dad bought a 1966 with a 289, a 3-Speed and an 8-track. My dad and I purchased a plain-jane faded yellow 1970 with a 302, Auto with a cassette player. I felt that the King, my car was newer than Johnny s and it was an automatic and it had a cassette player. It did not run at the time so we started a rebuild. About a month later the seller called and wanted to buy it back, my dad let me make the decision, so we sold it back to him for $800 (doubled my money). I did not get another Mustang in high school, but drove his car Johnny s car most of the time and he drove my tricked-out Chevette. I ve had a few more Mustangs along the way but today I m a proud owner of: SECRETARY Alyce Ancell ra.ancell@gmail.com TREASURER JoAnn Martorano jdmartorano@yahoo.com SGT. AT ARMS Catherine Walrod Mustang GT (it was the 1 st year that they brought back the 5.0), so I bought (Sally) in March It is the GT Premium package equipped with 3:73 gears, with MY Color, sync system, exterior package 5, and Brembo brake package with 19 wheels. This one goes really fast, but more importantly, it stops on a dime.

Member of the Month (cont.) I had been looking for an old Mustang for a few years, I had the fever again. After a few months, I finally zoned in on what I wanted: Fastback with a Code A 289, with a 4-Speed transmission. I wanted the GT Package, AC, and the Pony interior. It was also important to me to know some history of the car. I reviewed thousands of online classified postings. I followed many ebay auctions and went to many out of state auctions. In June 2017, I was very excited about an ebay auction. The posting lacked some critical info and the pictures were sub-par. I contacted the seller and asked many questions. Ebay would not allow the auction to end early (It was in the last 24 hours), so I had to bid. Almost all the bidding happened within the last five minutes. There was another serious bidder, and he was increasing his bids by $100-$250 at a time. My adrenaline was pumping as hard as I can ever remember. I set my highest bid and waited. The other guy kept bidding but ran out of time. I sent a deposit and booked a flight to Austin to see the car in person. She said that if I was not happy, she would refund my deposit. I was very happy. Her name is Molly. She had all the things that I wanted.

TECH TALK Tech: Aftermarket Tilt Column Gotcha Using Mustang Steering Wheel Submitted by Ron Columbo Do you want a steering wheel tilt column in your classic Mustang? I did and installed a Flaming River tilt column in my 65 red fastback. As nice as it is, it wasn t an easy bolt-in conversion, so I m writing this tech article so that others can learn from my experience. Mustang magazines, websites, and manufacturer websites have a plethora of information on how to install these aftermarket columns and what needs to be done with measuring and shortening the column tube, and shaft, lengths to get a perfect fit. However, none of them seem to have much information on how to use your original Mustang steering wheel with the columns. This latter issue is what this tech article is about. You can purchase the columns with either a GM- or Ford-type splined shaft, so I purchased one with a Fordtype shaft figuring that would be the straightforward way to go since I had a nice woodgrain steering wheel to use. (As an aside, I want to mention that the Flaming River columns come with ONLY a GM-type electrical plug for the column s wiring, so one has to cut off the Ford connector on the underdash wiring harness and install a GM-type connector.) For whatever reason, it seems like the overwhelming majority of aftermarket steering wheels use an adapter hub which mates with the GM-type splined column shaft, so the Flaming River column and its innards were made to support that fact. That results in a problem when trying to use an original or repro Mustang steering wheel. Figure 1 shows what the turn signal switch and horn contacts are like on a Mustang steering column. Note that there are two contacts for the horn, and that both the horn contacts and the turn signal switch a not far down in the column housing. Figure 2 shows the Flaming River column horn contact (only one) and the turn signal switch sunken in about an inch or so into the column housing. Flaming River supplies a plastic adapter that will go in between the column innards and the steering wheel hub to bridge the gap from the end of the housing to the electronics. They call this the cancelling cam and it gives the capability to cancel the turn signal switch and also provides for bringing the 12V from the column s horn contact to the steering wheel s horn contacts (Figs. 3 and 3A).

TECH TALK (cont.) Figure 4 shows the back of the Mustang steering wheel hub. Note that there s inner and outer horn contact rings (disregard the wiring and drilled hole for now). When depressing the horn spokes on a Ford wheel, contact is made between those two rings. Now, in order to use the cancelling cam with an original-type Mustang steering wheel so it will cancel the turn signal switch and provide 12V to the horn contacts, a hole must be drilled through the steering wheel hub. I had called Flaming River Tech Support and that was their suggested method. (One should realize that this steering wheel after drilling a hole cannot be reused on an original Mustang column without repairing this hole or replacing the contact ring.) Figure 6 shows how the tube of the cancelling cam and the horn contact wire comes through the drilled hole to the front of the steering wheel hub. While this would be fine for aftermarket steering wheels that have a horn button, it will not work for the Mustang wheel because the horn contacts are on the back of the hub! So in order to re-route the horn power wire to the back of the hub, the hole had to be elongated so that the wire could go back through the hole and along side the cancelling cam tube (Fig 7).

TECH TALK (cont.) Next, I had to get the 12V power and a ground to the steering wheel s horn rings on the back of the hub. Figure 8 shows the horn 12V power wire that was re-routed to the back of the hub was screwed into the inside horn ring. (The inside ring was where Ford applied the 12V). Additionally, since the Flaming River column didn t have two horn contacts, I had to find an electrical path from the outer ring to a good ground. As it turns out, the Flaming River s column shaft was a good ground so I installed a jumper wire from the center of the hub (that slides onto the column s splined shaft) to the outer ring. After all of this, Presto! A working horn and cancelling turn signals. While the end result is very nice, getting it to work wasn t bolt in! I hope this article will help anybody who wants to install a Flaming River tilt column and use a Mustang steering wheel in their classic Mustang.

Mustang News Mustang is a hit with Chinese buyers, Ford says In 2017, Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou led Mustang sales in China, with enthusiasts taking to the road in the region's top colors, including shadow black, race red and lightning blue. (Photo: Ford) It's hard to imagine a more American car than the Ford Mustang, but apparently it's striking a chord with Chinese buyers. Ford says that sales rose 35% last year compared with the previous year and that it was the best-selling two-door sports coupe for the second year. China is the world's hottest auto market. Best of all for Ford, Mustang is showing much of its popularity among young buyers and women. One Chinese race car driver, Guo Xin, has become a Mustang collector, Ford says. He also helped organize a Mustang Club in China in The idea took off: There are now more than 4,000 members in various Mustang clubs in China, according to Ford. Guo also has a Beijing garage that specializes in repairing Mustangs. We attracted a lot of attention with our Mustang fleet on the road," Ford quotes Guo as saying. "It is a very special sports car, filled with character and more than 50 years of heritage, and everyone can feel it. Another owner is a TV and film producer who goes by the name Miss Ru. I like the contrast of a feminine girl driving such a masculine muscle car, Miss Ru is quoted as saying. It's her first car. Source: Chris Woodyard, USA Today Ms. Ru, a television and film producer, is one of the growing number of Mustang owners enamored by the allure of the iconic poly car. (Ford)
