More then 85 exceptional cars enjoy perfect weather and a big crowd. Good weather is the key ingredient in any successful car show, and no one could have asked for a better day than Sunday, September 16, on the lawns of the historic Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport, Long Island. Puffy clouds and blue skies presided over this year s joint Concours event hosted by the Jaguar Drivers Club of Long Island and the MG Car Club Long Island Centre. Of course, the second most important ingredient in a great show is a large turnout of spectacular cars, and this year s Concours saw more than 85 cars on the upper and lower show fields, virtually filling them to capacity. Everything from a singlecylinder BMW Isetta to a V-12 Ferrari 250 GT showed up this year, complementing plenty of Jaguars and MGs and giving this year s throngs of show attendees a smorgasbord of exciting cars to admire. For Jaguar enthusiasts, there were about a dozen fine XKEs of all stripes, plus several early XK models. The XJS series was well represented, with both coupes and convertibles as well as an exceptional XJS- SC and a hunched-down, rumbling Draguar with a supercharged Chevy V-8 and a big blower scoop poking out through the bonnet. Jaguar saloon fans were treated to a rare 340 and a beautiful Mark IX, plus lots of others including XJ6, XJ8, and X-type models. In the American saloon category were a lovely maroon and beige 1949 Nash Airflyte and a shiny black 1937 Dodge humpback sedan. Also from the U.S.A., a 427 Cobra roadster and a rare Cheetah were parked side-by-side on the lower field, and a late-model electric blue Mustang was shown on the upper lawn. Jaguar of Huntington had a pair of new black Jaguars on display for the crowd: a sleek long-wheelbase XJ8L and Cont. pg, 2

2 Page 2 an XK8 convertible with a lovely chocolate leather interior. Master machinist George Luhrs displayed several of his amazing fully operational miniature gasoline engines, fascinating all attendees with the tiny size of the parts in the multi-cylinder motors. And George brought the display in his daily driven, original Maserati 3500 GT, which has logged more than 300,000 miles. George overhauled the car s straight six motor himself at 160K master machinist indeed! MG fans saw a bumper crop of TDs, MGAs, and MGBs, plus a nice TF. Triumphs, Lotuses, and even a Jensen Interceptor gentlemen s express were on the field as well. Keeping with years of tradition, Joe Limongelli was at the microphone again this year as Concours master of ceremonies, reeling off fascinating details about nearly every car in the show. At the end of the day, Best-in-Show honors went to Marc Lemchen s red liter XK150S roadster, a rare car one of just 36 ever made. It was a tough choice when deciding the award, given the superb quality of so many of the cars on the show field. George Stephani and Mike Carroll, vice presidents of the JDCLI, and Steve Becker, president of the MGCC-LIC, deserve a round of applause for their leadership in organizing a great event this year, and of course they could not have done it without the many show volunteers and Concours judges who helped to pull this off so well. No doubt everyone who attended this year had such a great time that they are already eager to mark their calendars for next year s Vanderbilt Concours as soon as a date is set! 6 Page 6 Your friends ask what s a Concours d Elegance? The term originated in France in the 1920s literally a gathering of elegance to denote the exhibiting of custom-bodied motor cars by their proud owners, and by European carrossiers, or coachbuilders, frequently in conjunction with latest couturier designs. As these early concours grew in scope and popularity, they attracted sponsorship, and prizes were awarded for outstanding design. The early concours featured mostly French the 1951 show, at New York s Museum of Modern Art, recognizing the automobile as an art form. Eight automobiles, selected for their superb design, were displayed at MOMA, and Arthur Dexler, the then-moma curator of architecture, described them as hollow, rolling sculpture. In fact, MOMA now includes a Ferrari and a Jaguar in their permanent collection. Automotive aficionados have revived the concept of the concours, both here and abroad, and the Vanderbilt Jaguar Concours d Elegance and All Marque Concours Sanitaire is a shining star in the firmament of prestigious motor car concours. This designs, but it wasn t long before German, Italian, English, and American coachbuilders were also vying for recognition by the cognoscenti. The focus was on excellence of design, rather than mechanical excellence, though custom coachwork was normally only fitted to the finest chassis. Though World War II brought an interruption to these glorious events in France, there has been a resurgence of such exhibitions as interest and appreciation of automotive design has grown over the years. One of the most Significant indications was year s event was a huge success with the combining of the two clubs and promoting a truly outstanding event, in the tradition of the original gathering of elegance.
