2 OFFICERS AI Shearer -- President Mark Rothermich -- Vice President Randy Light -- Secretary and Membership Chairman Joe Shaw -- Treasurer Jim Price -- Activities,Chairman Mark Rothermich -- Technical Committee James Dahmann -- Publications Chairman John Sands -- Projects Chairman CALENDAR OF EVENTS July 2 General Meeting July 18 National Tour Starts in San Diego and goes to Victoria, B.C. July 13 Progressive Dinner in the afternoon. We need volunteers for salad, soup, main course, dessert stops. Jim Price, PRESIDENTIAL PODIUM by Al Shearer During the course of the recent "Wheel for Wings" automobile exhibition in Balboa Park, a casual bystander might have received quite an education had he been tuned into the running commentary by various mell?-bers of the paying public. For instance, while sitting in my car, resting in mid-afternoon, I overheard the following remarks: "Packards weren't made after 1950 and t all those at the end of the line were.bogus models" and another, "No Packards were made after the war, just certain custom hand crafted types". Then came some new wrinkles, like, "The colors on the '48 - '56 Packards, especially the '53's and the '56's were totally incorrect as Packard never used colors like that", and, not totally unusual, "None of the Packards present were really 'senior' models as their hoods weren't long enough to accommodate the "famous" Packard in-line twelve which was the best engine in the world, etc., etc." These were but a few of the ludicrous statements I heard that afternoon and totally supports the mystique of the Packard Marque - the general public just doesn't and in fact, didn't know that much about the subject. Doesn't this tell those of us who have survived and do know most of the basic facts about Packard, and other. marques, that we have a moral obligation to educate the public and correct misconceptions as best we may? The question is: HOW? August Joint Studebaker/ Packard Shopping Center Display. 3 JULY TOUR - PROGRESSIVE DINNER WHEELS FOR WINGS by Al Shearer Join us! PI, San Diego Region's premier Progressive Dinner. Then the group will go ~o Jim Price home-on-the-hill where Jim and Joan have main course honors. Finally, we're off to Poway to James Dahmann'sfor dessert and a fine conclusion to a wonderful day of touring the gourmet trail! We'll distribute maps for Jim and James' homes at the start of the tour. Now - all you need to do is call Jim Price at by July 7 to indicate that you are coming. This way each of the chefs will know how much to prepare. Then come to John's house on the 13th and we'll get started! Do comethis should be a delightful time for all of us to share our hobby and friendship with each other. CARS FOR SALE 1951 '200' Sedan, good engine, needs windshield $ '400' hardtop no engine, $400. call, lets talk. Ed McBride, (714) Approximately two years ago, the Aerospace Museum in Balboa Park, A San Diego, was "torched" by an arsonist and totally destroyed. It was a tremendous and tragic loss as most of the memorablia was absolutely one of a kind and irreplaceable. The relocation and rebuilding process was started almost immediately and a year ago last December the first "Wheels for Wings" automobile exhibition was held in the park to help provide funds for the ongoing effort. About 185 vehicles showed, representing at least 15 of the major clubs in the San Diego area and the financial take was mild at best. This year the event was held for the second time on a beautiful June Sunday, directly in front of and alongside the new museum, and was an unqualified success. There were almost 260 vehicles of every description representing all of the various automotive clubs in the area, with rare exception and the public response was overwhelming. Happy to say that there was a complete Packard line of twelve vehicles representing the period of 1930 to 1956, and was probably the longest period of described production and the most representative of all the marques displayed. Hopefully, it is indicative of a growing public interest and member dedication to automotive education and restoration. NEXT year ought to be "something else"! Members attending with their cars: John Sands, 1930 standard eight sedan. Jon Grace, 1932 standard eight phaeton. Bill Haynes, 1936 '120' coupe. Lloyd King, 1937 '120' coupe. Wally Walmsley, 1937 '120' convertible coupe. Tony Paradowski, 1938 six coupe. Mark Greene, 1939 Super Eight sedan. Randy Light, 1948 Custom Eight sedan. Joe Shaw, 1953 Clipper Deluxe sedan. 'Beau' Beaumont, 1953 Mayfair. Al Shearer, 1953 Patrician. Jim Price, 1956 Caribbean Hardtop. Clean. light frame of "200" model is on a wheelbase of 122 in., 2 in. greater than on 1950 model it replaces. Wheelbase of "300" and "Patrician 400" models (replacing 19.'50'5 SlIper ami CIIStom) remains unchanged at 127 in. All models have almost 9 in. ground clearance.
