1 PACKARDS INTERNATIONAL MOTOR CAR CLUB VOLUME 14 OCTOBER 1988 SAN DIEGO REGION Reminder for our OCTOBER TOUR WINE COUNTRY PICNIC with Cadillac-LaSalle Club On Sunday, October 9, we will tour with the Cadiilac-LaSalle Club to the Temecula Wine Country area in Riverside County. The first meeting place and START OF TOUR will be the SANDS HOTEL, the big dome west of route 163 at Clairemont Mesa Blvd. The Cadillac Club and the Packard club will gather there at 0900 to begin the tour. The second stop and meeting place will be at 1-15 at route 76 park and ride where we will pick up those from the North county coast and inland areas at about 10:15 am. We should arrive at the CALLOWAY WIN ERY about 10:45 to 11:00 am, and take a breather, because our tour will start at 12:00 noon. The CALLOWAY WINERY is located at Rancho California Road, east of Our tour will include a lecture about wine and winemaking, a taste of 4 wines, (must be 21 or over) and a souvenir glass. For this you pay a sum of $1.50. After the winery tour, we will gather for our pot luck picnic on the winery grounds. Everyone bring a large dish of your favorite food and your own dishes and utensils. A LAST MINUTE CHANGE: We will have a brief business meeting at the picnic. This was decided because of the lateness in September of that monthly meeting, and the close proximity of our regular meeting date to that of both the September and October tours. If you can't make the tours, please plan to be at the November meeting for the election of officers, thank you. After the picnic, an entertaining visit to several antique barns will round out the day. It promises to be a great fall tour, so come on out and join us. Call Linda for reservations at or just join us at the prescribed place and time and enjoy a day of fun and friendship.
2 BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR 1988 President Rick Bittner Vice-President Tony Collins Secretary Treasurer Membership Projects Publications Technical Programs & Tours Linda Bittner Ken Yankee Lloyd King Mark Rothermich James Dahmann Phil Burgess B.J. Hill Fred Perkins THE DRIVER'S SEAT H W H W W I believe it is important to give recognition to those club members who have continued to give of their time in support of the 1953 PACKARD MAYFAIR fund raising project which will benefit the San Diego Automotive Museum. First of all, James Dahmann and Mark Rothermich have been in the forefront with their zeal and dedication to this goal. Each has been unselfish with his time and innovative with ideas to show and advertise our project. With their advertising efforts, in such publications as Old Cars Weekly, etc., the club receives 5-10 requests for tickets daily from across the nation. Mark and James, along with Linda Bittner, Helen and Tony Paradowski, B. J. Hill & Tony Collins, Lloyd King, and Ginger McLean have ben in the forefront when it comes to attending events which display the car and sell tickets. As an example, we received over $ in ticket sales on September 18, 1988 at the Seaport Village Concours. Although no official tally has been maintained, it is obvious from ticket stubs that George Cataline, Bert Salas, Mario Ballerini, Tony Paradowski, and Tony Acierno lead the dub with ticket sales. My thanks to each of you on behalf of our club. Your dedication and support to our organization has been recognized both inside our club and throughout the community. The Board of Directors nominating committee will present a slate of new officers in October. The new officers are for Per the club's by-laws, any member wishing an absentee ballot must send a written request to the club president. The request will be placed on file and an absentee ballot will be mailed to that member(s) in time for the election scheduled for the general membershiop meeting on November 2, MAYFAIR PROJECT We need ticket sellers! Several events will be upcoming and we need help in selling tickets. Please let Linda Bittner, , know if you would be willing to help out for a few hours. The more people we have, the less time each of the volunteers willhave-to he there at any one event. The company, Patek Philippe of Geneva, said the price was the highest ever paid for a watch without precious stones. Since Packard's death in 1928, the watch has been on loan to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington along with other items from Packard's estate. Known as "the Packard," the pocket watch includes dials that indicate moon phases, sunsets and sunrises, leap years and heavenly time. It also has a repeater mechanism that strikes the hours and quarter-hours. The watch was sold through a private deal engineered by the Ameri-' can Watchmakers Institute. The watch took five years to make after it was ordered by Packard. The $16,000 price paid was unprecedented It1- the time.. 51) UIUlo..)
