1 San Diego Region PRESIDENT S MESSAGE The June 29 visit to the San Diego Automotive Museum s restoration facility was fun, and along with the behind the scenes areas at the Museum itself made for an interesting day. The volunteers here really can use some help so if you are in a position to do so, please give it some thought. There was a late minute date snafu on this event which hurt attendance somewhat, but I want to pass along a personal thanks to Richard Mills who personally took on the responsibility to contact the entire membership to make sure we all had the right date. Thanks, Richard. We also had a noteworthy achievement on July 4 Paul Santy has his car back on the Road! Congratulations, Paul! It s now time for us all to shift focus to the upcoming Cruisin Grand weekend. The club volunteers led my Mark Burnside are doing a terrific job in planning what should be an exciting and memorable weekend. As in previous years, this weekend will see a number cars coming from Orange County as well as from our own chapter. There should be a number of details about the weekend passed to you shortly and in this newsletter please sign up right away it really helps with the planning. With the additional cars that we have on the road this year, I m hoping that we have a record turnout. See you all in Escondido, Todd Schonenberg, President EVENT CALENDAR August 3: Auto Heritage Parade Highland Ave, 9 a.m.; Car Show, Kimball Park, National City, 10 a.m. 4 p.m. Contact Todd Schonenberg for Free Car Show Entry August 17: Pebble Beach Concours September 12-14: Cruisin Grand in Escondido October 11: Allen Airways Collection Tour, Gillespie Field in El Cajon November 14-16: Arizona Region 35 th Anniversary Celebration at Lake Havasu, AZ December 7: Annual Holiday Party, Lazy H Restaurant, Pauma Valley January 11, 2009: La Jolla Motor Car Classic, La Jolla Cove San Diego Automotive Museum Restoration Shop Tour by Richard Mills A sunny Saturday morning found a group of Packards International owners gathering at the San Diego Automotive Museum restoration shop in National City for a tour of the shop and the chance to see the automobiles from the museum s collection that are not currently on public exhibit, including the recently donated 1946 Cadillac (oops, am I allowed to mention that make of automobile in our newsletter?) ambulance that is currently undergoing restoration to make it museum ready. The dust covers were removed from whichever cars the tour group wanted to see. A special thanks is extended to Dick Weixeldorfer and David Knetzer for their help during the restoration shop tour. A drive up I-5 took us to Balboa Park and the museum itself, where those of us not members of the museum were admitted at a special reduced rate. There, we saw not only the regular display, but also the Motocross display on loan to the museum from the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Pickerington, Ohio, thereby saving ourselves the time and cost of traveling across the country to see it. Also, the library was opened especially for us, including the normally off-limits stacks containing thousands of auto-related books, magazines, repair manuals, advertisements and other items for research. Unfortunately, due to the need for some repair work in the curatorial rooms, the collections normally housed there when not on display were scattered in storage throughout the building and were not available to us. As fate would have it, the repair work has, of course, been started, but that does us no good; perhaps some future date. 4 Packard Cruisin Grand & Packards in the Park Concours September 12 14, 2008 Join us September 12, 13 and 14 for a fun-filled weekend of Packard activities - including the 5th Annual Packard Night at Escondido s Cruisin Grand. We have planned 3 days of events that you won t want to miss. The San Diego and SoCal Regions of Packards International Motorcar Club again combine for this annual get-together. The weekend will have a patriotic theme as we start Friday with a tour of the General Atomics Predator manufacturing facility, and finish on Sunday with a car show at Camp Pendleton for our men in uniform. Here s a summary of what s in store: Friday afternoon Tour the General Atomics Predator manufacturing facility in Rancho Bernardo. See the famous pilot-less spy plane under assembly, one of the most complex pieces of defense equipment this nation has ever built. Three 45-minute tours will be conducted by SD Region VP Richard Shauer, starting at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00. This event is included in the registration fee below. Friday evening Show off your Packard at our 5 th Annual Packard Escondido s Cruisin Grand from 5:00 to 9:00. One block of Broadway is dedicated to Packard-only parking. A grilled hamburger dinner will be served nearby (so you don t have to leave your Packard for more than a few minutes to grab dinner). Each Packard entered gets 2 free dinner tickets; additional tickets may be purchased at the event for $5.00 each. Saturday Packards in the Park Concours event at Bernardo Winery. This is the first-ever San Diego Region Concours event. While this will be a judged event, you can enter your Packard in the display-only category. Hours are 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Sunday An optional event for anyone who would like to join in a salute to our men in uniform at Camp Pendleton for their 4th Annual Patriotic Rally: Car Show & BBQ to honor School of Infantry (SOI) students. SOI is a training division at Camp Pendleton, where young men in the U. S. Marine Corps learn advanced infantry skills. 90% of these young Marines will go to Iraq once they finish training at SOI. The Carlsbad Chamber, Armed Services Committee wants to show its appreciation for these young Marines, and say thank you by giving them a celebration with classic cars, civilian food, and entertainment. Hours are 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Tour Director: Phil Pizzuto Hotel information: We have reserved a block of 15 rooms at The Hilton Garden Inn of San Diego / Rancho Bernardo, Bernardo Center Drive, San Diego, California, USA The special rate for the rooms is $79.50 per night. The hotel is located 2.5 miles from Bernardo winery and will provide covered parking for all Packards International guests. Reservations must be made by August 15, The rate is good for Friday and Saturday nights. When making reservations, the group name is Packards In The Park and group code is CAR. Cost: We are offsetting the cost of the weekend with sponsorships from vendors of Packard related products and services. Because of this, we can keep the registration fee to an absolute minimum: a mere $15 per Packard. No Packard? No problem; the registration fee is $10.00 per person. Make checks payable to P.I. - San Diego Region. Complete the registration form and mail to P.I. - San Diego Region. Driving directions to the events will be ed to you in early September. Call Mark Burnside at (h) or (m) with any questions. Registration for the Camp Pendleton Car Show and BBQ is $25 (tax deductible). Registration forms are available on-line at Completed forms and payment for this event must be mailed directly to the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce.
