Steffey Garage Tour and wine Tasting Touring of Temecula April 7, 2012 By Richard Schauer This may become an annual event well, if the membership so wishes of course. Once again a heartfelt thanks is extended to hosts Ron and Cherrie Steffey, who really know how to throw a party. Again, weather could not have been better, with a cool morning, and a high in the comfortable 80 s. The low point of the day was achieved early and abruptly. Our president Steve took a tumble off the step outside Ron s garage, landing hard on the concrete. The result was skinned knees, a badly jammed left hand, and a serious over-all jarring, but fortunately no ambulance ride to the hospital or broken bones. Everyone held their breath lemme tell ya. After a nice visit, with snacks and champagne, we headed out to lunch. Wallace Goldie and his longtime friend Nanette have the honor of having driven the farthest, coming from El Cajon. The special guest of the afternoon was Susan, former owner of Stewart Winery, whose expertise and contacts in the business benefited us at lunch and at the wineries. We drove first to Thornton Winery, which has a very nice outdoor dining area, excellent service, and good food. Well, sadly the lunch was a disappointment. The famous Thornton hamburgers arrived burned to a crisp, on notch below shoe leather. They were still tasty, but many found them to be inedible. The bill was adjusted substantially, and poor Ron and Cherrie may never get over the disappointment. Here in writing is the official absolution: Ron and Cherrie, it was not your fault, and we had a great day! But, next year we may have lunch at the next place we visited Leoness, in sharp contrast to Thornton, was a great stop! It is located deep in the Temecula wine country, which gave the cars a chance to tour the rolling countryside on a beautiful day. More intimate than Thornton, Leoness offers a very nice wine selection and an outdoor dining area that serves what very likely are the BEST French fried potatoes in the planet...two varieties to choose from. Take if from me, it s worth the trip there just for the FF s. Susan, Ron, and Cherrie exerted their influence with the staff, so the usual wine tasting fee was waived. If we in fact do stop there for lunch in 2013 I know what I M having lunch! Time flew, and before we knew it the afternoon was gone. With heavy hearts we bid our goodbyes and pointed the brand-x car south back to civilization. Ron s beautiful 1932 model 901 Convertible Roadster 4

PACKARDS AND AIRPLANES Steve Ros 1940 Waco Bi-Plane and Mark Burnside and Sydney Kirkland s 1949 Packard Limo Saturday morning April 15, 2012 at the normally quiet and docile Pauma Valley Airport came alive with the arrival of classic, vintage Packard s and classic, vintage aircraft. The Packards ranged from a 1931 Packard 833 five passenger coupe owned by Dick Walworth to Colin and Suzanne Forts L-P8 Station wagon. Dick s 31 coupe was not all in one piece but all the pieces were there. There were a variety of interesting aircraft in attendance. The marque most represented was the Pieper Aircraft. There were several models and variations of the Pieper. The two most interesting aircraft were the 1940 Waco and a 1945 Boeing Stearman. The Stearman was the basic flight trainer for the U.S Army Air Corps prior to and during WWII Waco flown by a former Marine Aviator and his wife. 7
Our host and fellow Packardite Dick Walworth and the Pauma Valley Airport Association provided us with a great barbeque and drinks. Special awards were presented to three Packards. Phil Pizzuto and the Blue Bomb won first place, Mark Burnside and Sydney Kirkland s 1949 Limo was second and Colin Fort and his 58 Station Wagon was awarded third place. All of the participants were presented a very nice commemorative wooden plaque. There was a float and/or land based plane in attendance and some of the planes were equipped with fat tires for landing on unimproved fields. In the late afternoon the flyers begin taxi out to go home as most of the aircraft were not instrumented for night flight. When they were gone the Packard s dispersed for home base as well 1940 Waco aircraft and a 1939 Packard 1940 Waco and the Woolsey s 35 Li 8

Mini-Cruisin' Grand in Escondido on March 30 by Mark Burnside The Premier Night of the 2012 season for Escondido's Cruisin' Grand was Friday March 30. A few members of the PI San Diego Region perceived that it would be a pretty good plan to punctuate the new season with a pre-planned preview of Packards parallel-parked on Grand Avenue. The plot was to start early and park innocuous Brand-X cars in 6 consecutive preferred parking places. Easier pronounced than performed. But this pack of clandestine parking place pilferers was poised to perform. At precisely 12:00 noon, clad in plain pants, parking place pilferer #1 began placing non-packards in the preferred places. Shortly, she had 3 places pilfered with 3 to go. Then parking place pilferer #2 showed up and parked his Mercedes-Benz in a preferred place. Minutes later, parking place pilferer #3 punctually appeared in his Packard but was prevented from parking on Grand Avenue because it wasn't yet 2:00, so he parked on a perpendicular path. Soon after, parking place pilferer #4 appeared in his non-packard and pilfered another preferred place. We now had a total of 5 pilfered places. The parking place pilferers present then passed the afternoon patrolling the pilfered places to prevent the police patrol from posting paper on the windshields for violation of the 2-hour parking provision. With 5 places pilfered, we had a predicament: a paucity of non-packards to protect places. The owner of the car parked in the final preferred (and as yet un-pilfered) parking place appeared and was placing herself in her Prius. Our quick-thinking parking place pilferer #4 perceived that it was now after 2:00, so he pleaded with her to put off pulling away until parking place pilferer # 3 could position his Packard in her place. Being the placating person that she was, she paused long enough for us to pilfer her parking place. We now had 6 pilfered places with one Packard already positioned. All we had to do was to wait for 5 Packards to appear and replace the non-packards with Packards. By 4:30, we had 6 Packards perfectly parked in the 6 pilfered places: Rick and Lucy Miller in their 1941 Touring Limo / Mark Burnside and Sydney Kirkland in their 1949 Super 8 Limo Jim and Catherine Woolsey in their 1935 Twelve Limo / Steve and Carol Ross in their 1939 Super 8 Touring Sedan Richard and Karen Schauer in their passenger Standard 8 Sedan / Phil Pizzuto in his 1939 Model 120 Touring Sedan The roles of parking place pilferers were played by the following PI members: #1: Sydney Kirkland #2: Steve Ross #3: Mark Burnside #4: #4: Art Wesselman (SoCal Region member who drove down from San Clemente without his Packard solely to help pilfer parking spaces.) Thank you, Art! 11

Motor Cars on Main Street Coronado Steve Ross Just after day break on Sunday April 22, the San Diego Region of Packards International Automobile Club met at the Macaroni Grill in Escondido and preceded in a single file formation to rendezvous with other Packard s at the Marriott Hotel in Coronado. A flight of Packards going down the freeway at speed is a sight to behold. They then preceded parade fashion up Coronado Avenue to the entry way for the Coronado Car show. Since we were expected, there were a number of people to assist us in receiving our packets and escorting us to our prime spot on the grass facing the ocean. On the field being admired and waiting to be judged. 13
After getting parked the final polishing and primping was completed and the lawn chairs were strategically placed for optimum viewing. Most were not used as we were all looking at the great automobile eye candy there. Richard and Karen Schauer s five passenger standard eight touring Sedan Colin Fort and his 58 Station wagon were at the show but arrived too late to be parked with the lawn Packards. The Packards attending were Mark Burnside and Sydney Kirkland s 49 Limo, Phil Pizzuto and his , Larry and Arvilla Johnson s sedan, Richard and Karen Schauer s 34 five passenger sedan, and Steve and Carol Ross s 39 super eight. Larry and Arvilla were accompanied by their in residence South Korean Student Hyowon Kim. The Yellow Peril made it there and back with the water it left home with. The Yellow peril likes cool days. Riding home on a flatbed is OK but driving there under our own power is a lot more fun. The Packards drew a lot attention, as they always do, and were definitely the stars of the show. Based on the results the judges liked them as well. At lunchtime we gathered everyone together and marched in a loose formation over to the Del Coronado Hotel for lunch. Upon our arrival at the Del Coronado Sheerwater restaurant we were led to our private dining area where we enjoyed a delicious lunch. 14
After lunch we had to hurry back to the Packard s as the results of the judging were being announced. It was well that some of rushed back as we had a winner and I do mean winner. Read more about it in this predictor. This was a truly fantastic outing and we had a great time. Some of our Packards failed to proceed properly and they were sorely missed. Besides being an automobile club it is an adventure. 15
AND WE HAVE A WINNER Steve Ross Boy did our club have a winner. Our very own Richard Schauer not only won first place in class but BEST IN SHOW. Out of over 300 automobiles in show the 1934 Packard five Passenger Standard eight sedan was chosen by the judges as the best example of an automobile there. Winning best in show is a really difficult feat! There were some other very nice cars there and the competition was stiff. Of course it was no surprise to his fellow Packard owners that Richard swept the competition. I heard the word Pebble Beach being tossed around. Do you think the 34 will be prepped for that show? Richard s win was even more significant in that the Packard Club has never won anything at this show that I am aware of. The San Diego Region is extremely proud of the Schauer s and their Packard win. 16
SELECTED SHORTS Richard Schauer I took the '34 on a couple short errands, just to give the old girl some exercise. Stopped at the post office. Finished, I jumped back in the car, but before I could so much as start it up a car came screeching to a halt in front of me, blocking my exit. An excited fellow hopped out of the car and walked briskly up to me, saying "Nice car, I had to come over and stop you and ask if the car is a Duesenberg!" I restrained my laughter and replied somewhat bemused that no, it is not a Duesenberg, but a Packard". "Oh, oh, I knew it, but I thought it might be a Duesenberg", after which he bent my ear for 2-3 minutes heaping praise about the car. I told the man I was not offended in the least by his mistake, and thanked him very much for the nice words. He drove away happy, and so did I...though somewhat shaking my head. 17
