1 San Diego Region PRESIDENT S MESSAGE We have what looks to be a great event coming up on April 4 with the tour of Craftsmanship Museum and additional events that day. This should be fun and we hope to see many of you there. As you look at the calendar, the peak of our program year clearly will be in August. With Packard as the featured marque at National City on August 2 and Balboa Park show with Pierce Arrow and Studebaker on August 15, this is when we hope all of you will have your cars at their best. Please help us make these events a big success. Flyers should be attached to the newsletter please sign up early. Note that National City is free for all Packards, and Balboa Park has a limited number of entries so sign up early so we aren t badly outnumbered by our friends in the Pierce Arrow and Studebaker clubs. The membership meet at the brewery was fun, and I want to personally thank Richard Schauer for putting this together and holding the fort while Deb and I were on vacation. Some of you may also know that Ken Yankee recently sold his yellow 1940 coupe to a buyer in Florida, who promptly drove it home without incident. Now that s a great driver! We will miss Ken s car, as it was a very frequent presence with Ken being an active participant in club events over the years. We expect to still see a lot of Ken, who came to the membership meet in a 1949 Chrysler New Yorker considering how often he participated with his Packard, he will be welcome in whatever he brings along! 3 Packards International, San Diego Region Final Big 3 Swap Meet Saturday February 28, 2009 Report by Richard Schauer: Saturday morning dawned clear and cool, another beautiful winter day in San Diego. By 7:00 a.m. the intrepid crew had already completed most of the set-up chores. That included Karl Ramsing, Paul Santy, Chuck Goode, and Ken Yankee, with much-appreciated assistance from the very tall and ever willing Mark Rothermich, who occupies the booth next to PI. Everyone was in good spirits and ready to start the day. Ron Crampton brought his beautiful 1955 Caribbean convertible, which drew tons of attention. While Ron was out and about browsing the swap meet everyone at the P.I. booth enjoyed trying to sell his car to the lowest, er, highest bidder. Ken Yankee, coming off the recent sale of his coupe, brought his other car, a 1949 Chrysler New Yorker, which also drew much admiration from the crowd. Later in the morning Jack Heacock stopped in for chat and a hearty sandwich. It seemed the crowd this year was thinned a bit due to the recession, but everyone was warm, friendly, and many conversations were struck up, contacts made, information passed along, and friendships re-kindled. To our delight two new members were signed up on the spot, with 3 more possible members yet to be determined. Paul sold a couple of parts worth $12 total, so we would not call it a spectacular parts day for the club. Club members were treated to a culinary treat by Peggy Ramsing s barbeque beef sandwiches. It was a good thing Karl brought ten pounds because everyone kept going back for more, and still more, until we could not eat any more! Our thanks go to Peggy for going to all the trouble and taking such good care of all the Packard men. The Studebaker Club folks paid a visit (which we reciprocated) and passed along an invitation to their August 22 event at Balboa Park, their Studebaker, Packard, and Pierce Arrow car show by the Auto Museum. Karl has fliers for anyone interested in joining this event. Perks include free admission to the Automobile Museum. This adds more spice to a month already busy with the National City event, the Pebble Beach Concours on August 16, and now the Studebaker show. We need to clone ourselves so we can enjoy all these events. At 4:30 we began the sad tear-down of our Big 3 booth. It has been suggested that we not renew our club for the 2010 Big 3 event. A vigorous discussion ensued by the Board followed by a vote, and thus it has been agreed that this is our last Big 3 event. Big 3 is certainly the biggest swap meet in San Diego and we have enjoyed parts sales over the years. But, for this author the event has been more about exposing Packard automobiles and our Club to the public, portraying a good image, making important contacts, helping people whenever we can, and going away a little sunburned and satisfied that we have done a good thing. It must be mentioned at this juncture that Ron Crampton s Caribbean won Best of Show prize for best Packard at our booth this year, squeaking past Ken Yankee s Chrysler by a nose, or bumper rather.

6 National City Chamber of Commerce Presents the 18 th Annual Automobile Heritage Day Save the Date!! Packard is the featured marque at the August 2, 2009 Car Show No Registration Fee to show your Packard Please plan to show your Packard and participate in this south San Diego County event. Car collectors, automotive enthusiasts, community members, business owners and the City s regional visitors will gather for this annual event. The event is free to the public and will kick off with a parade at 9:00 a.m. starting at Mary J s café on Cleveland Avenue and 20 th Street and will end at Kimball Park behind City Hall on National City Boulevard and Civic Center Drive. The car show will be held on the grass at Kimball Park from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will feature over 200 unique and highly prized antiques, classics, collector cars, race cars, trucks and other vehicles. The National City Chamber of Commerce will provide prizes, entertainment and booths by local vendors and community groups. Car show winners will be selected through a competitive ranking system by experienced car show judges. Trophies will be awarded for each vehicle class. Awards include Best of Show, Peoples Choice, Mitch Guarano Memorial Award, Class Trophies and Winners Circle. Trophy winners drive to a trophy presentation area at 3:00 p.m. and receive their prize while seated in their car. You may opt out of the judging and bring your car for display only. All Packards at the show will be parked together, don t miss this opportunity to show our beautiful cars to other collector car owners and the general public in south San Diego County. We will plan a caravan for north San Diego owners to drive and arrive together. Lunch for the day of the event will be planned at a later date.
