3 Olar South Carolina Historical Society Statement of Purpose This 1 st Annual Car Show will donate all proceeds toward our upcoming museum. The Society has a broad program of activities planned, specifically, The CF Rizer Model T Ford Museum, which will display up to 20 Model T Ford cars and 30 years of memorabilia which will promote the memory of the Model T Ford. The Olar South Carolina Historical Society, a private not-for-profit organization founded in 2016, is dedicated to the study and appreciation of all aspects of the history of Olar, SC, through educational programs, research, archeological projects, preservation advocacy and the collection and preservation of fine arts, decorative arts, archeological objects, printed and manuscript materials and maps, costumes and weaponry, and historic artifacts related to the history and heritage of Olar, SC. The major operation unit of the Society is: The Model T s To Olar Festival. The town of Olar has a special connection to the Model T and Ford Motor Co. because of Henry Ford s relationship with Olar native C.F. Rizer, who owned a Ford dealership in the early 1900s. The Model T chugged into history on Oct. 1, Ford called it the universal car. It became the symbol of low-cost, reliable transportation that could get through when other vehicles and horse-drawn wagons were stuck in muddy roads. The Model T won the approval of millions of Americans, who dubbed it Tin Lizzie. The first Model T cars sold for $825 for a two-door roadster, a bargain compared to other cars. During its 19 years of production, Ford continued to lower its price, thanks to manufacturing efficiencies including the moving assembly line, introduced in Rizer s business in the early 1900s included general merchandise and farm supplies. He added another building in 1912 that provided different departments for the goods he carried, and included a store for his buggies, wagons and harnesses. When the automobile became a reality the next year, Rizer had the first and largest supply and sales of any dealer in South Carolina. In 1914, Henry Ford, not having the capital to expand, called Rizer asking if he had any money to spare. With full confidence in the automobile industry, Rizer loaned $25,000 to Ford. That year, Ford sold half a million cars, and the industry was on its way. The Model T s to Olar Festival was created as a tribute to the town s special connection to Ford. The audience served by the Society s programs includes residents, school and college students and visitors to the community, businesses and governmental agencies in the area, scholars of the history and pre-history of the community, scholars of American history, art historians and the general public. We encourage everyone to be a part of this great effort. The purposes of the Society are: (1) to collect and preserve artifacts, objects, publications, photographs and other documentary materials related to local, ethnic and family history; (2) to disseminate information about the history of the community through exhibits, educational programs and publications based on the Society s collections; (3) to maintain a research library of past and current literature on the history of the community; and (4) to encourage the preservation of the archeological, historical, and architectural heritage of Olar, SC. To achieve these purposes the Society has a broad program of activities planned, including: maintenance of a museum, library and welcome center; exhibits, educational programs, lectures and publications that work to preserve the heritage and history of Olar, SC.

4 Olar, SC Model T Festival Olar businessman loaned $25k to Henry Ford in early 1900s As a nod to its unique connection to Henry Ford, the town of Olar established the Model Ts to Olar festival several years ago. Model T and other antique car enthusiasts across the region enter their vintage vehicles in the festival parade and car show each fall. The town of Olar on U.S. 321 in Bamberg County has a special connection to the Ford Motor Company because of Henry Ford s relationship with Olar native C.F. Rizer. The same year, Rizer Auto Company, as it was known, received the largest single shipment of cars ever in Bamberg County. It took a train with a half a mile of 64 boxcars, each bearing four Ford automobiles, to bring the vehicles from Detroit, Michigan to Olar. The 256 cars arrived in Olar in March, and the last one sold in November. These cars had to be assembled and put together for a contract price of $15 a car. In July 1920, Rizer placed a full-page ad for Rizer Auto Company of Olar, advertising his intention to discontinue activity in all other lines. Rizer was able to outsell other dealers because he had sufficient capital to sell on credit. Ford awarded Rizer the exclusive franchise to sell Fords in Bamberg, Barnwell, Colleton, Hampton and Allendale counties. Rizer would put his salesmen on the road in the five-county area and the cars would sell quickly. It was not uncommon to sell as many as 10 cars a day. Rizer passed away in 1950 at the age of 81 and is buried in Starr Cemetery in Olar. The former Rizer Auto Co. building housed the Olar Fire Department until the building was demolished in early 2011 and a new fire Station was built.
