3 CALENDAR OF EVENTS NOVEMBER 1 Birthday Party at Jesse Hunt's home on Point Lorna. Its a pot luck, main course and cake on the club - you bring a dish of whatever you want - salad or vegetable type and we'll have fun and, enough for everyone! NOVEMBER 4 General Meeting NOVEMBER- Birthday Party Place to be Announced DECEMBER 2 General Meeting DECEMBER? Christmas Party at Dick Hagen's House t North 3829 Nipoma Place Is it a 120 or What? By Lloyd King Many people in our hobby today, and particularly those owning a later model are not aware of the reasoning behind the naming of the "110" and "120" Packarde. It is hoped this article wll clear it up. When the "One Twenty" was introduced in 1935, it had a 115 horsepower engine and a 120 inch Wheelbase chassis. The name "One Twenty" indicated only the wheelbase. In 1936 the engine horsepower was increased to 120 and this may have been the beginning of the problem. Some people started thinking the name of the car related to it's horsepower, but there was still no problem through 1937 as it still had a 120 horsepower engine and e 120 inch wheelbase. Then the pickle was pulled out of the jar. In 1937 Packard introduced a six cylinder car of 110 horsepower on a 115 inch wheelbase. There seemed to be no problem naming the car, they would call this smaller car the "115-C" in keeping with the "120" for 1935, the "120-B" for 1936 and the "120-C" for In 1938 both car bodies were complet.ly redesigned and were no 10ngeY' on the 115 and 120 inch chassis'. The slt ~;as on a 122 inch and the eight on a 127 inch chassis. To name them the Packard 122 and Packard 127 was enough to stick in one's craw, so better names had to be found. Since the six was the only six in production, it would be called the ~Packard Six", and the eight the "Fackard Eight" to distinguish it from the "Feckard SUper Eight". These names were carried through 1939, but the general public were still thinking along the lines of horsepower, so in 1940 the names were finally changed to "110" and "120" and stayed so to the start of the war. Today most people still refer to all of the sixes as "110. SOl and the eights as "120's" even if they are of 1937, 38 or 39 vintage.
4 TECHNICAL Rear Main Bcaring Oil Lealcs 55th Series Oil leaks at the upper outer corners of the r~ar main bearing cap may be caused by seepage of oil. between the milled surfaces of the cap and the crank ~ case. This condition can he corrected by removing the rear maio hearing cap and filing a notch on each side' of the cap approximatt:ly }/ deep, 1 ft ahead of the oil seal groove tu drain oft the oil. "See illustration." Throttle Control Rod All Models Occasionally the automatic transminion throtde control rod becomes bent due to an accident of some kind. Due to its peculiar shape: it is difficult to de termine whether or not it is bent. '" Because of its function in controlling throttle pressure which aft'ects other pressures, clutch engagements and upshifts, it is very Important that the rod be of the proper length. 25W--55th TWI N ULTRAMATIC 3OU"--54th TWIN ULTRAMAT'C, --' th. 25th, 26th. 54th 2<=1"-.
