On February 24, the club visited Wehrmann Engineering, a wellequipped shop in Hauppage that provides chassis, suspension, mechanical, fabrication, and other services to car enthusiasts ranging from collectors to vintage racing teams. Owner Mark Wehrmann welcomed about 60 members of the JDCLI and MG car club to the facility and gave tours of the main floor, which houses the shop, and the lower level, where clients cars are securely stored. A row of historic race cars held everyone s interest as Mark gave a rundown on each. Coffee and donuts perked everyone up, and small groups began to head to the race car simulators at i-racing Center of Long Island, located in the same building as Wehrmann Engineering. Owner Artie Weiner briefed the virtual drivers and set everyone up to run Lime Rock Park on the simulators. Spinouts and crashes made the simulators wobble and bump realistically, while a downshift at too high an rpm produced a bang as the motor detonated. But a quick push of the Reset button made everything good as new again. Cont, page 4

2 Page 2 President s Corner The coming of March can only mean but one thing and that is spring is just around the corner and that heralds the start of some of the best driving and car events of the year. Introducing: The 2013 Jaguar F-type! So, wake the cat up and look over the calendar and make plans to join us for the upcoming events that are of interest to you. I would like to welcome Shelley Green for volunteering for the Treasurer position and thank you Rolf Schwagermann for all your years of service as Treasurer. Lee Stephani volunteered as Club s Secretary and thank you goes to Carol Schwagermann for her services as Secretary all these years. Well, the time is nearly upon us the formal introduction of the exciting Jaguar F-type at Huntington Jaguar s newly renovated showroom on Jericho Turnpike. From Thursday, March 21, through Saturday, March 23, the dealership will celebrate with an open house featuring the new sports car displayed alongside some of its famous predecessors, provided by JDCLI members. The F-type was unveiled to the world at the Paris Motor Show in September 2012, ending a long period of anticipation that Jaguar would be bringing back a twoseater along the lines of the XKE. Thanks goes out to Laurence Campbell as past President and assuming the position of Vice President and Mike Carroll for continuing in the roll of Vice President and Concours Chair. Steve Leoniak continues as Club Photographer. Gerry Duff & Mike Carroll had suggested winter events for the club which have been a huge success. Automotive writers on both sides of the pond have been offering interesting tidbits, there s surely more to be found online. Stuart Milne at the Autocar (U.K.) said last November that Jaguar is readying a six -speed manual trans for the F-type, to be introduced toward the end of this year. He reported that the XF may receive this option as well. Marty Padgett, writing at the car connection.com last month, said there are rumors that the new sports car initially available with a choice of two supercharged V-6s (340 and 380 hp) or a supercharged 495-hp V-8 will also get the turbocharged 4-cylinder that s now available in the XF, where it produces 240 hp and delivers 19 mpg city/30 mpg highway. 4 Page 4 Wehrmann from page 1 Janice Campbell burned up the track and set the best lap times. Her sons were said to remark, Hey--maybe we should let her drive from the back seat! A raffle was held to help cover expenses for the simulator time, and Brian O Keefe held the winning number. He graciously donated a portion of his share back to the club to cover more of the expenses. The event was a great success, and the club thanks Mark and Artie for showing us such a great time. 6 Page 6 From pg. 2, F-Type A coupe version of the XKF was expected to be unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show this month, but it failed to appear. However, an F-type convertible on display there arrived via Jabekke, Belgium, where it exceeded a mph production car speed record set by Jaguar test driver Norman Dewes back in 1953 in a canopied XK-120. Andy Wallace, one of the drivers of Jaguar s winning LeMans entry in 1988, piloted the new F-type V8S to 179 mph on the same course en route to the Geneva show. Prices for the F-type begin at $69,000 for the 340 hp V-8, $81,000 for the 360-hp F-type S, and $92,000 for the V8S. At Wikipedia, rumors are listed for upcoming hybrid and AWD versions of the F-type. Meanwhile, auto writers are predicting an up market move by the XK8, possibly into Aston Martin territory. More a V-6 XF Sportbrake Station Wagon (sold in Europe only) grand tourer than a sports car, the XK8 may in the future acquire a bit more back seat room and move further into supercar territory. This is a great move for Jaguar, splitting the sports car lines into two diverging market segments ranking right up there with the new all-wheel-drive system that brings the V-6 XF and V-6 XJ needed parity with other luxury sedans. The new sports car promises to bring Jaguar into better focus in the U.S. market, as the XKE did so well 50 years ago. The F-type is being built at Jaguar s busy F-Type Coup Castle Bromwich plant in the British Midlands. One thing Jaguar doesn t have is an SUV, though rumors of one are mentioned at carscoops.com, as well as a forthcoming FWD aluminum-bodied small saloon. Meanwhile, the XF Sportbrake yes, a station wagon made its debut at Geneva. Powered by either four- or six-cylinder diesels, it would seem that these probably will not be imported into the U.S. However, that could change fairly easily. The other big intro at Geneva is the XFR-S supersaloon. This month it s all about introducing the historic new sports car in the U.S. market. Yes, the F-type is far more sophisticated than the XKE technology has come far in the past 50 years. But it puts Jaguar back in the top range of a segment that includes the Mazda Miata at the low end, ranging up to the Boxster, the BMW Z4, and the Mercedes SLK similar to how the XKE competed with MGs, Triumphs, and Austin Healeys in its heyday. Get ready these svelte new Jaguars will be on the roads soon. But don t wait see your first F-types at Huntington Jaguar, 1249 East Jericho Turnpike, Thursday, March 21, through Saturday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. In addition to the new F-types, several vintage Jaguars owned by JDCL members will be on display at the dealership. 9 Page 9 Post Holiday Luncheon and Exotic Classics Showroom Tour Despite Old Man Winter trying to snow us in the Jag Club came out to tour Exotic Classics showroom in Syosset with a informative guided tour of the facility by Craig Balaban. Craig provided coffee & donuts for the club before the start of the tour which helped us all to thaw out from the freezing temperatures. Owners store their vintage and modern cars here and can sell their cars as well. Exotic Classics has a professional photo studio to photograph your car and write up an ad for you to sell it for a nominal fee. Afterwards members made their way over to Singletons Restaurant for lunch and to cast their votes for the club s election of Board Officials. Thank you from Glenn Tinnie Photography Top five worry-free classic cars By Rob Sass Classic cars in general (and especially older exotics) have a reputation for being, let s say, just a little finicky. The popular perception is that owners spend at least three hours tinkering for every hour of driving. Not so. Buy a well-kept example of any of the cars on this list and you can be virtually guaranteed of on-demand, drama-free sunny day fun Ford Model A: Henry Ford s successor to the model T is a car that fits nearly anyone s definition of what a vintage car should be. They re totally user-friendly to operate (it was the first car with a gas, brake and clutch pedal arranged in the standard fashion), parts are easy to find, and even if you can t track one down, things like a bottle cork will often do in a pinch. 1964½-1966 Ford Mustang: Another Ford from a different era easily makes the list. Classic Mustangs are anviltough and extremely easy to maintain, particularly the sixcylinder cars. Anyone with a shop manual and a decent set of sockets and wrenches can perform nearly any task. Mustang parts are also readily available and inexpensive Chevrolet Corvette: Sports cars often get a bad reputation for complexity and being difficult to maintain. Not so for early Corvettes, which eschewed maintenance-intensive things like power steering, independent rear suspension and air conditioning in favor of simplicity. Consequently, this first generation of America s favorite comes with a carefree maintenance routine Datsun 240Z: Other than the rust-prone bodies, early Z-cars just don t seem to wear out. They re reliable, and like the first generation Corvettes, lack maintenance items like A/C and power steering. Ancillary components like starters, alternators and fuel pumps seem to last forever Austin-Healey Sprite: It may seem odd have a British car on this list, but the fact of the matter is, many of them are dead simple and easy to maintain if not 100 percent reliable. The little Sprite (known affectionately as the Bugeye because of its pop-eyed face) is perhaps the most endearing and the simplest-to-maintain British sports car. The entire front end lifts up to offer perfect access to engine and suspension, the engine itself is a tiny under 1- liter affair that is tough to break, and Sprite parts are easy to come by and cheap. There s nothing here that a shade tree mechanic of even average ability can t deal with.
