1 the I S S U E 5 N O V E M B E R November is membership month This time of year there s a chill in the air that signals a return indoors. Crafters and artists are getting back into glass. Are you? Membership renewals Membership renewal season is underway. Anyone whose membership is due to expire soon will receive an renewal notice. Existing members that choose to renew before December 1, 2013, can purchase any item through our Order desk before January 1, 2014, without a minimum purchase amount. If they choose to renew before their membership expires, a new membership card will be issued with an adjusted expiry date. That is, 12 months will be appended to their current expiry. New members Anyone interested in becoming a member before December 1, 2013, will have one month added on to his or her membership year. 2 Highlights from the Craft Market New pattern trio $36.95 Now available, this new pattern pack is suitable for copper foil, fusing, and mosaic. The set comprises three 18 ¾- inch rounds: koi and water lily, morning glory, and starburst. Each pack includes two pattern copies and glass recommendations. Think tabletops, window, and a host of other applications! We are pleased to announce the next expansion to our craft market: sheet glass. Along with the basic supplies needed for glass fusing and stained glass, such as came, chemicals and frit, we now offer System 96 sheet glass and a variety of stained glass in a larger spectrum of colour. 3 Membership Cook off 3 Thanks to everyone who cheered on and participated in the latest cook off. Melanie and Elizabeth and their intrepid assistants faced off in two hours of creative competition and friendly rivalry. Members selected mystery ingredients and theme. Special thanks to Wendy Emery for moderating, Nick Beecham for filming, and assistants Millean Kung and Mia Louie for their participation and energy. Featured book Warm Glass: A Complete Guide to Kiln- Forming Techniques Fusing Slumping Casting by Philippa Beveridge, Ignasi Doménech, Eva Pascual (Lark Books, 2003 IBSN ) This book has a long title, but is a great go to fusing reference handbook. Comprehensive instruction and detailed photography take you step by step through basic and less explored kiln techniques. History, chemistry, and best practices are covered. There are lots of ideas, patterns, and techniques for stained glass and fusing. It s great to browse and explore and get inspired for your next project. We are working on the second phase of our membership initiatives and plan to provide you with some enhancements in the coming months. A friend and member of the Studio, guest instructor Pauline Selkirk will be teaching the Electroplated Angels workshop on November 23. Pauline has over 20 years stained glass experience. With her fun hobby lead technique you will create elegant angels. Afterwards, the pieces will be electroplated to prevent tarnishing and leeching. If you have been away from stained glass for a while, this is a great way to be reintroduced.
