4 Message from Patron Greetings and welcome to all the speakers, moderators, exhibitors and delegates of Sarawak-China Business Forum It is my pleasure to extend a special welcome to the speakers and delegates from China to Sarawak. For the past 600 years, Sarawak has enjoyed a close and strong relationship with China. China is one of the countries that I go to when Sarawak wants to benchmark on the possible directions for its digital economy strategy. With its One Belt One Road initiatives, there are endless possibilities and opportunities for a win-win cooperation between China and Malaysia, particularly Sarawak. Sarawak is striking it while it s hot as China is definitely a business force to be reckoned with, and we would like to enhance our future collaboration with China on establishing a dynamic business environment for both sides. There are many potential areas including digital infrastructure, technology transfer, cyber security, talent development, ecommerce platform and governance. I am happy to note there will be many knowledge exchanges and sharing relating to business regulations and protocols at this business forum. These are necessary and much welcomed as Sarawak moves into digital economy to transform the state s economy. I am also happy to share that under the Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy ( ) we have established a number of new and transformational initiatives to drive the growth and development of the state digital economy. Among the initiatives Sarawak has set up are the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) and Development Bank of Sarawak (DBOS) to spearhead the state s development of digital economy. In addition to that, Sarawak will leverage on the establishment of the First Digital Free Trade Zone outside China in Malaysia. Sarawak also has launched our own electronic payment system or e-wallet called Sarawak Pay which we believe will further support our transition into ecommerce. This business forum between Sarawak and China is indeed timely to accelerate the transformation of the state digital economy initiatives and strategies. I would like to put on record my appreciation to the Organising Committee for their concerted efforts in organising this business forum and providing a golden opportunity for our local business fraternity to network with their peers from China. Last but not least, thank you to all speakers, moderators, exhibitors and delegates for their support and participation. 6 Message from Minister In my capacity as the Minister for International Trade and ecommerce Sarawak and Minister for Finance (II) Sarawak, I would like to welcome all speakers, moderators, delegates and exhibitors to this business forum. A special warm welcome is also extended to our speakers, delegates and exhibitors from China to Kuching, Sarawak. As Sarawak sets to transform its economy through digital technology, my Ministry is tasked with the responsibility to provide the necessary platforms and avenues to create a conducive business ecosystem for all stakeholders. Contents and information are key to enable people to collaborate further. It is therefore our aim to use this business forum to disseminate the necessary yet crucial information about doing business in both China and Sarawak. We are confident that this business forum will be able to shed light on the necessary procedures, regulations and experiences to mitigate the issues and gaps in order for both sides to collaborate successfully. The speakers from both China and Malaysia are experts and therefore will be able to share their knowledge and experience on these matters. I urge all delegates to take this opportunity to expand their networks through the business matching sessions at the forum. Once again, I would like to thank the speakers, moderators, exhibitors and delegates for their support in making this forum possible. I strongly believe that the business forum will be able to generate new business ideas and opportunities for our local business players and to guide our planners and implementers to achieve our aim to increase the business partnership between China and Sarawak. 8 Message from Advisor In my capacity as the State Secretary of Sarawak, I am most honoured and pleased to welcome speakers, delegates, moderators, exhibitors to the Sarawak-China Business Forum I wish to extend a special welcome to our speakers and delegates from China. The business forum is a good platform that will enable both businessmen from China and Sarawak to exchange potential business ideas and proposals to spur future partnership and collaboration. I am happy to note that speakers will also be sharing case studies and success stories on investment in China and Sarawak respectively. In this era of IoT, online business or ecommerce has become a new trend of doing business. Under the visionary leadership of the Sarawak Chief Minister, Sarawak has taken a bold step in coming up with the strategy for the Digital Economy of Sarawak. We are confident that digital economy is going to drive the next era of development and transformation of Sarawak. ecommerce is one of the digital economy strategies and Sarawak is riding high on the potential and opportunities created by cyberspace especially on ecommerce. The State Government has established a platform, the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) that will be the focal point in the implementation of the Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy. This Authority will spearhead and coordinate all government digital economy initiatives and we welcome all potential investors to work closely with SMA to achieve common objectives. Sarawak is set for an exciting road ahead with the potential of ecommerce. We are working in tandem to improve the necessary support system and provide a conducive environment to meet the demands of ecommerce. I strongly believe with an experienced business partner like China, Sarawak is able to address its challenges and have a smoother journey towards digitalising its economy. China is the top ecommerce market with a market value of USD1.132 trillion in 2017 (emarketer 2017). The ecommerce market is expected to grow further as mobile shopping popularity continues to rise. It is therefore timely that Sarawak should tap into this huge market for its local products and services. I wish everyone a successful deliberation and networking at the business forum.
