4 GENERAL INFORMATION ON TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT WITH CONTACT THERMOMETERS 1. Teperature as easured variable For nearly all procedures in research and production, teperature is a factor to be considered. It is of considerable iportance as easured variable. For teperature easureents, teperature dependent characteristics of aterials can be used, as for exaple the changing electrical resistance (resistance theroeter), the electroagnetic radiation of hot bodies (radiation pyroeter) and resulting theroelectric voltage (therocouple). The different electric contact theroeters are freuently used for the field teperature easureent. 2. Physical basis 2.1. Resistance theroeter Teperature easureent with the help of resistance theroeters base on the special characteristic of conducting aterials to change their resistance dependent on teperature. For etals the resistance increases with rising teperature. In case that the correlation between teperature and resistance is known, the teperature can be deterined by resistance easureent. The suggestion to use the teperature dependent resistance of etal conductors for teperature easureent, was first ade by Wilhel von Sieens, the brother of Werner von Sieens in 1861 and was realized in the developent of a theroeter for the easureent of deep sea teperatures. The works of H.L. Callendar ade the resistance theroeter a precision device in Therocouples The first basis of the therovoltage effect was discovered by Seebeck in Thirty years later the exact correlations were found out by Thopson. The therovoltage between 2 different etals depend on the theral otion of electrons. It is not dependent on the absolute teperature values, but on teperature differences. The higher the teperature difference between hot and cold, the higher the therovoltage. The voltage at 1 degree Celsius is called the theroelectric force of the therocouple. It depends on the nature of the two aterials whose connection point is heated. 3. The response tie of contact theroeters The teperature easureent with the help of contact theroeters is generally afflicted with a delayed indication. The result is that a changing teperature is not iediately indicated correctly but only after a certain tie when the heat exchange between the easured ediu and the teperature probe has been fully realized. This inertia of theroeters shall be as sall as possible for certain easuring tasks. This is called the response tie of a theroeter which eans generally the tie constant. Generally spoken: the tie constant corresponds to the relation of the capacity of heat absorption and heat release of the theroeter. Both characterisitics are ainly deterined by: heat capacity transversal theral conductivity of the theroeter relation of surface to volue of the theroeter coefficient of theral conductivitiy between ediu and surface of the theroeter as well as of the ediu velocity, its theral conductivity and its specific heat. If a theroeter is suddenly exposed to another teperature, as for exaple by taking it out of water with a teperature of 20 C and putting it into water of 40 C, the indicated teperature rises alost according to the exponential function. The usual uantity for the changing velocity of such exponential procedures is the tie constant. The tie constant is eual to the tie that passes until 63.2% of the teperature leap is indicated. In any cases, the teperature indication does not change according to the exponential function. For those cases the tie constant is not sufficient to characterise the tie response. Therefore it is useful to indicate the half-tie z 0.5 and the 9/10 tie value z 0.9. This is the definition of tie fro the sudden change of teperature to the reach of 50% either 90% of this teperature change. The exponential course shows z 0.5 = (tie constant) resp. z 0.9 = (tie constant) and the ratio z 0.9/z 0.5 has to be eual to

The high teperature resistance of the connection sleeve is highly suitable for the application in hot runner techniue. Three standard construction types of the easuring tip are available. This sensor type can be obtained with copper tip, easuring ring or without fix accessories. Without fix accessories the ineral insulated therocouple is suitable for the placing into a groove considering the diaeter. After being defored, the copper tip is suitable to be craped under a pipe clap. Types with easuring ring are especially suitable to be ounted in the hot runner nozzle. The surface treated easuring tip is also suitable for application in reinforced plastics. In case of adeuate ounting only the nitrated easuring tip is in contact with the olten ass strea.
