FEATURES AND ADVANTAGES: Liquid-Cooled Engine The cylinder head features a new squish band and compression ratio (from 7.9:1 to 8:0:1) to add solid bottom and mid-range power. The piston dome is raised from 1.0mm to 2.5mm to complement the new squish band for a harder hit in the powerband. The cylinder port heights were all raised 0.5mm and the exhaust ports have a new shape to boost top-end and over-rev performance. Transfer ports have new port windows, lengths, and shapes to match new cases for a quicker transition from off-idle response to low-end power. The cylinder exhaust bridge is relieved by a machine instead of by hand for more consistent tolerances. A new piston profile works with this change for tighter tolerances and more power. The engine case transfer area at the cylinder base is shallower with a new shape to increase primary compression and improve port efficiency for better low-end response and a stronger hit. The reed cage mating surface was machined 4mm to bring the reed cage and carburetor closer to the crankshaft for better throttle response. The intake tract was altered to better direct airflow with the closer reed cage, new transfer area, and a new reed cage stabilizer wing. The reed cage has a horizontal stabilizer wing to reduce turbulence at low engine speeds and throttle openings for better response and pick up. To improve shift feel, the shift drum pins are now separate parts with a polished finish, instead of being part of the shift drum end plate. The muffler is nearly two inches shorter to cut weight and enhance mid-range engine response. The end cap is secured with 6mm screws. Kawasaki Integrated PowerValve System Heavier KIPS governor bearings, new bearing cups, and stronger dual KIPS springs prevent valve flutter at high rpm and open the valves quicker (8,000-8,800 from 7,900-9,000) for more mid-range power. KIPS varies the exhaust port height to broaden the useful rpm range for: good low end and mid-range without sacrificing the top end power. Mikuni TMX36 Carburetor A new Mikuni TMX36 carburetor boosts low-end power and response significantly. The needle sits closer in the carburetor to the intake system. A longer air box boot is used in conjunction with the shorter carburetor. Digital Capacitor Discharge Ignition The igniter is now 22% smaller and uses a simpler single multi-pin connector instead of two. Ignition timing is slightly retarded from the 2000 model. The flywheel is 4¼ ounces lighter to quicken engine response. Three other flywheels are available to tailor performance. Uni-Trak Rear Suspension A straight rate rear shock spring has a stiffer initial rate so the rear end rides higher for quicker cornering and less wallowing. Hollow Uni-Trak linkage bolts are lighter and use larger threads (12mm to 14mm). The rear shock has separately adjustable low and high speed compression damping to adjust for the rider s weight, skill, and track conditions. Inverted Cartridge Fork New settings make initial response more plush without bottoming. New axle clamps reduce fork underhang and cut unsprung weight. Internal bladders work with a special piston for true, speed-sensitive damping that is stiffer on quick hard hits, and supple on slower bumps. High Tensile Steel Perimeter Frame Nearly 1/3 pound was cut from the steering mechanism to lower the center of gravity. A tapered steering stem is used and the bolting surfaces of the fork pinch bolts and axle clamps were further machined to allow 5mm shorter bolts that now use 10mm heads (12 bolts in total). SPECIFICATIONS Front and Rear Disc Brakes KX125-L3 Displacement...124cc Bore & Stroke x 54.5 mm Compression Ratio...Variable :1 Carburetor...Mikuni TMX36 Front Wheel Travel in. Rear Wheel Travel in. NOTE: Specifications subject to change without notice. Ask about Kawasaki s Team Green amateur rider support program. New front brakes have more power and bite with a caliper that has 19% larger pistons (from 22.65mm to 27mm) and a longer, lighter body with added ribs for rigidity. A new master cylinder has a larger 11mm piston (from 9.5mm) to actuate the bigger caliper pistons. Front and rear brake pad compound is more aggressive for more braking with less effort. Kawasaki
2001 KX125 TECHNICAL SUMMARY The KX125 competes in a battlefield, so Kawasaki gave it new cases, cylinder, and a Mikuni TMX36 carburetor, which enhanced low-end power and response dramatically. It has a wider powerband with more torque across the board. New front brake helps the rider to stop on a dime while a straight rate rear shock spring and revised damping, front and rear get the power to the ground. It will be a good year for riders in green. MAJOR FEATURES KX125 Engine The cylinder head features a new squish band that works with a raised piston dome and the compression ratio was increased from 7.9:1 to 8:0:1. These changes are aimed at adding solid bottom and mid-range power High Speed Compression Ratio 7.9:1 8.0:1 The piston dome is raised from 1.0mm to 2.5mm high to complement the new squish band for a harder hit in the powerband. The cylinder port heights were all raised 0.5mm and the exhaust ports have a new shape to boost top-end and over-rev performance. Transfer ports have new port windows, lengths, and shapes that match new crankcases for a quicker transition from off-idle response to low-end power TECHNICAL SUMMARY 18
The cylinder exhaust bridge is relieved by a machine instead of by hand for more consistent tolerances. The piston profile was altered to work with this change for tighter tolerances and more power. The engine case transfer area leading to the cylinder base is now shallower with a new angle and shape to increase primary compression and improve port efficiency. This improves low-end response and makes for a stronger hit. A new base gasket is used The reed cage mating surface was machined down 4mm to bring the reed cage and carburetor closer to the crankshaft for better throttle response The intake tract was altered to better direct airflow with the closer reed cage, new transfer area, and the new reed cage stabilizer wing The reed cage has a horizontal stabilizer wing like the one introduced on the 2000 KX250. This reduces turbulence at low engine speeds and throttle openings for better response and pick up. 19
The KIPS governor features heavier governor bearings, new bearing cups, and stronger more durable KIPS springs. These changes prevent valve flutter at high rpm and open the valves quicker for more mid-range power KIPS Opening RPM 7,900 9,000 8,000 8,800 (from start to fully open) A new Mikuni TMX36 carburetor boosts low-end power and response significantly. The needle sits closer in the carburetor to the intake and the float bowl shape allows the carburetor to be moved closer to the crankshaft without interfering with the clutch arm. A longer airbox boot is used in conjunction with the shorter carburetor. To improve shift feel, the shift drum pins are now separate parts with a polished finish, instead of being part of the shift drum end plate The igniter is now 22% smaller and uses a simpler single multi-pin connector instead of two. Ignition timing is slightly retarded from the 2000 model. The flywheel is 4¼ ounces lighter (same as the 99 KX125) to complement the other engine changes and quicken engine response. Three other flywheels are available to tailor performance to track conditions and riding styles. The muffler is nearly two inches shorter to cut weight and enhance mid-range engine response. The end cap is held in place with 6mm screws (from 5mm). The exhaust pipe O-ring diameter was changed from 39mm to 42mm so they are not stretched as tight which improves sealing performance
Chassis New front brakes with more power and bite are big news for The caliper uses 19% larger pistons and a longer body with added ribs for rigidity. Overall caliper weight is down slightly. The master cylinder has a larger piston to actuate the bigger caliper pistons. The brake pad compound is more aggressive and there is no longer insulation paint on the backside of the pads Caliper Piston Size (x 2) 22.65mm 27mm Master Cylinder Piston Size 9.5mm 11mm Nearly 1/3 of a pound was cut from the steering mechanism to lighten steering. A tapered steering stem is used and the bolting surfaces of the fork pinch bolts and axle clamps were further machined to allow 5mm shorter bolts that now use 10mm heads (12 bolts in total). The handle bar clamp bolts use 10mm heads also. A straight rate rear shock spring uses a stiffer initial rate than the 2000 model to help the rear end ride higher for quicker cornering and less wallowing. The single rate makes it easier for tuners to calculate the effects of spring rate on suspension action Rear Shock Spring Rate (kg/mm) 4.6 / 4.9 / Hollow Uni-Trak linkage bolts are lighter and use larger threads (12mm to 14mm). New compound rear brake pads offer more braking with less effort. The footpeg spring preload tension is increased to avoid peg rattling. The rear rim lock now has a foam pad between it and the rim to help keep the spokes from coming loose

FEATURES AND ADVANTAGES: Liquid-Cooled Engine The new cylinder features smaller intake ports to boost intake velocity which improves engine response from off-idle through the low-end. The top of the exhaust port is slightly wider to enlarge the port window for greater volume for improved peak and over-rev power. The connecting rod big end bearing is plated with 70% more silver and the crowning on the crank pin is larger to add durability. Carbon fiber reeds improve low- to mid-range engine response. Holes at the base of each petal reduce tension for added durability. New main seals and countershaft seal reduce friction by 10% to unleash more power. The water pump gear was lightened by adding holes to it. A new exhaust pipe enhances top-end power and is nearly 1/3 pound lighter. The muffler is two inches shorter to cut weight and the end cap is secured with 6mm screws. Kawasaki Integrated PowerValve System (KIPS) The KIPS valves and the sub exhaust port passages are 2mm larger on the top and bottom edges (4mm total) for added exhaust flow at high rpms for top-end and over-rev power. The stroke of the center KIPS valve is shorter to open quicker for a better transition of power and more mid-range. New KIPS governor springs are made of more durable 4-stroke valve spring material and the governor shaft preload increased slightly. Kawasaki Throttle Responsive Ignition Control (K-TRIC) A throttle position sensor tells the igniter how hard the engine is working so its micro computer can maximize ignition timing and power jet settings for quicker throttle response and maximum power. Keihin PWK38S Shorty Carburetor The power jet system is now activated according to engine rpm and throttle position for even better throttle response. The power jet circuit only flows fuel at or above ½ throttle while below 8100 rpm. Carburetor jetting is altered to work with this new setting. Digital Capacitor Discharge Ignition The igniter is 22% smaller and uses a single multi-pin connector (from two). 5-Speed Transmission Shifting was improved with narrower engagement dogs on the 2nd and 5th gears and larger engagement slots for the 3rd and 4th gear. The gears slide more easily into place with narrower dogs or larger slots. The 3rd and 4th gears are made of a higher grade steel to deal with the increased load. The shift detent lever uses a 17mm roller (from 16mm) and a stiffer spring for quicker, easier shifts. A more rigid ribbed clutch pressure plate resists flexing and rides on a thrust bearing instead of a ball bearing for better clutch engagement and feel. Uni-Trak Rear Suspension A straight rate shock spring has a stiffer initial rate so the rear end rides higher for quicker cornering and less wallowing. Hollow Uni-Trak linkage bolts are lighter and use larger threads (12mm to 14mm). 46mm Inverted Cartridge Fork New settings make initial response more plush without bottoming. New axle clamps reduce fork underhang and cut unsprung weight. Internal bladders work with a special piston for true, speed-sensitive damping that is stiffer on quick hard hits, and supple on slower bumps. SPECIFICATIONS High Tensile Steel Perimeter Frame Nearly 1/3 pound was cut from the steering mechanism to lower the center of gravity. A tapered steering stem is used and the bolting surfaces of the fork pinch bolts and axle clamps were further machined to allow 5mm shorter bolts that now use 10mm heads (12 bolts in total). Kawasaki
2001 KX250 TECHNICAL SUMMARY What do you do with a KX250 engine unanimously voted best in class? If you re a Kawasaki engineer, you add one more horsepower and improve shifting and clutch action. New front brakes help slow riders down after grabbing the holeshot. The suspension improved with a straight-rate rear spring and revised damping specifications, front and rear. Green is the color of money. MAJOR FEATURES Engine The new cylinder features smaller intake ports to boost intake velocity which improves engine response from off-idle through the low-end. The flat area on the top of the exhaust port is now longer to enlarge the port window for greater volume. This change improves peak and over-rev power The KIPS valves and the sub exhaust port passages have been enlarged by removing 2mm on the top and bottom edges (4mm total) to improve exhaust flow at high rpms. This adds top-end and over-rev power. Bottom-end power is not affected since these passages are closed below 6,000 rpm. The stroke of the center KIPS valve is now shorter so that it will open quicker to create a better transition of power. The KIPS system is designed for the governor to begin opening all valves at 6,000 rpm. The center valve completely opens first, and then 250 rpm later the sub-valves become fully open. This smoothes the flow of power and retains more mid-range than if all the valves opened at once TECHNICAL SUMMARY 24
A new exhaust pipe enhances top-end power and is nearly 1/3 pound lighter. The wall thickness remains the same. The connecting rod big end bearing is plated with 70% more silver and the crowning on the crank pin is larger to add durability. Carbon fiber reeds improve low- to mid-range engine response. Holes at the base of each petal reduce tension which minimizes the chance of cracking Intake Reed Material Epoxy Resin Carbon Fiber Shifting has been improved by narrowing the engagement dogs on the 2nd and 5th gears and making larger engagement slots for the 3rd and 4th gear to engage. With narrower dogs or larger slots, the gears can more easily slide into place for a gear shift. The 3rd and 4th gears are also made of a higher grade steel to deal with the increased load. To further improve shifting, the shift detent lever uses a 1mm larger roller (from 16mm to 17mm) to help roll over the points of the shift star more easily. A 16% stiffer positioning spring helps pull the roller into place to complete the shift. A more rigid clutch pressure plate has added ribbing to resist flexing. It now rides on a thrust bearing instead of a ball bearing to improve clutch engagement and feel The pad at the base of the clutch activating arm is 0.5mm wider and positioned more to the center of the shaft to change its stroke, advancing the clutch push rod further to better disengage the clutch for better feel and action
New main seals and countershaft seal reduce friction by 10% to unleash more power. The igniter is now 22% smaller and uses a simpler single multi-pin connector instead of two. The power jet system is more finely tuned for even better throttle response. It is now activated according to engine rpm and throttle position. Previously, the power jet was only activated according to rpm. The power jet circuit only flows fuel at or above ½ throttle and at less than 8100 rpm. The carburetor jetting is altered to work with this new setting New KIPS governor springs are made out of more durable 4-stroke valve spring material. The governor shaft preload increased slightly. The water pump gear was lightened by adding holes to it The muffler is two inches shorter to cut weight and enhance mid-range engine response. The end cap is held in place with 6mm screws (from 5mm) Chassis New front brakes with more power and bite are big news for The caliper uses 19% larger pistons and a longer body with added ribs for rigidity. Overall caliper weight is down slightly. The master cylinder has a larger piston to more powerfully actuate the bigger caliper pistons Caliper Piston Size (x 2) 22.65mm 27mm Master Cylinder Piston Size 9.5mm 11mm
The brake pad compound is more aggressive for quicker stopping and there is no longer insulation paint on the backside of the pads for better feel Nearly 1/3 of a pound was cut from the steering mechanism to lighten steering and lower the center of gravity by cutting weight mounted high on the chassis. A tapered steering stem is now used and the bolting surfaces of the fork pinch bolts and axle clamps were further machined to allow 5mm shorter bolts that now have 10mm heads (12 bolts in total). The handle bar clamp bolts also have 10mm heads A straight rate rear shock spring uses a stiffer initial rate than the 2000 model to help the rear end to ride higher for quicker cornering and less wallowing. The single rate makes it easier for tuners to calculate the effects of spring rate on suspension action Rear Shock Spring Rate (kg/mm) 4.8 / 5.1 / The Uni-Trak linkage bolts are hollow and use larger threads (from 12mm to 14mm). The rear brake pads use a more aggressive compound for more braking with less effort. The footpeg springs have more tension to keep the pegs from rattling. The rear rim lock now has a foam pad between it and the rim to help keep the spokes from coming loose. The rubber handlebar dampers are now made of a more durable material. 27
