1 SPECIFICATION OF CIRCUIT BREAKER Principle of operation 1, Principle of operation of hydraulic magnetic circuit breaker (see drawing 1) The circuit breaker adopts a hydraulic magnetic tripper to protect the equipments as well as the circuitry under its short-circuit or overload current. In form of the series connection, it consists of a solenoid coil and a group of contacts. There is a hermetically sealed, non-magnetic tube containing a sping-loaded, movable iron core and a silicone liquid filling. This core insertion reduces the reluctance of the magnetic circuit and further increases the strength of the magnetic field. The silicone liquid regulates the core s speed of its move, creating a controlled trip delay that is inversely proportional to the magnitude of the overload. The armature is connected with the contacts and the solenoid coil, there is no current through the breaker when the contacts are connected, and there is current and magnetic flux on the coil. With the load current at or below the breaker s current rating (See drawing 2) With the load current is either at or below the breaker s current rating, the magnetic flux is of insufficient strength to move the core, or it remains at the end of the tube opposite the armature. The contacts keep the position of connection. Trip under overload current (see drawing 3) On an overload when the load current excesses the breaker s current rating, the magnetic flux increases, pulling the iron core into the coil toward the armature at the end of the tube while the magnetic resistance decreases and the magnetic flux increases, then the core is pulled to the side of pole end of the tube. By the increasing magnetic flux, the armature is pulled to the side of the pole, then the breaker trips. Trip under short circuit (see drawing 4) On very heavy overloads or short circuit, the flux produced by the coil, regardless of the core s position, is sufficient to pull the armature. This circuit interruption occurs with no intentional delay- a highly desirable response characteristic.
2 2,Principle of operation of the delay tube. Drawing 5: With the load current either at or below the breaker s current rating, the magnetic flux on the coil is insufficient to pull the iron core toward the side of the pole so the iron core and the armature keep their positions. Drawing 6: On an overload when the load current excesses the breaker s current rating, the magnetic flux pulls the iron core in the tube towards the side of the pole, then the spring is pressed, the silicone liquid regulates the core s speed of trip, creating a controlled trip delay. Drawing 7: On an overload when the load current excesses the breaker s current rating, the iron core is pulled toward to the side of the pole, then the armature is pulled to the side of the pole too. Drawing 8: On very heavy overloads or short circuit, the flux produced by the coil, regardless of the core position, is sufficient to pull in the armature. Internal circuit diagram of circuit breakers 1, Without Auxiliary switch; A basic two terminal device is usually used as a combination power switch and overload protector. The contacts and current sensing coil are connected in series with the line and load terminals. 2, With Auxiliary switch; Series Trip with auxiliary switch Same as a series trip except with the addition of a S.P.D.T. snap-action switch, which is electrically to the movement of the main breaker contacts. This switch is commonly used to remotely signal the status of the breaker(on or OFF/TRIPPED).
