4 rm Heavy uty Starters - Starter Features, Application SP starters combine the rugged characteristics of a NMA rated contactor with a solid state overload which provides phase loss protection. It offers the industrial user greater protection and added life for motors in heavy duty applications. The inherent benefits of the SP result in cost savings as well. Self-Reset Version General - A SP Solid State Starter SP Solid State Overload Relays These standard features of the SP provide xtra Starter Performance. True phase loss protection; trips within seconds. High accuracy trip curves; ± % repeat trip accuracy. ase of use. Mount, wire, and set FA. Overload is self protected against short circuits. Overload is self powered and requires no hard wiring or separate power source. Simple, versatile adjustment; minimum of : FA adjustment range. (: in lower FA ranges.) Heaterless construction minimizes energy costs and the costs of cabinet ventilation or cooling. protection is standard. and protection are available. Provides motor protection for / Hertz. The self-reset starter is ideal for cranes, hoists, and other applications where the controls are mounted in a remote location that may be difficult to access. The overload contact opens for a short duration (- msec) on an overload or phase loss condition. The unit provided can be applied in one of three ways:. Three wire control circuit using Furnas - contactor. The selfreset overload can be retrofitted and applied in a three wire control application as a remote reset overload without additional components or wiring.. P(assuming initiating starter coil via P) Tinners and counters can be used to determine time between restarts and maximum number of restarts.. Use overload contact to drop out a control relay. See page for wiring diagrams. - A Melting oy Starter Melting oy starters are standard. Together with the proper heater elements, these starters help to provide protection to motor windings from harmful currents. These currents damage the motor winding through overtemperature. The conditions are often caused by overloading the motor, sustained low voltage, or stalled rotor. Melting oy overloads include a trip indicator and manual test feature. An isolated NO or contact is available. g>> * SP FA Adjustment ial- FA of the motor. -Set the adjustment dial on the overload to the -% Bimetal Starter Typical Solid-State Overload Adjustment ial Markings ach overload is precisely calibrated and labels are individually laser printed and then custom applied for each particular calibration. Bimetal starters, together with the proper heater elements, help to provide protection to motor windings from harmful currents. These currents damage the motor winding through overtemperature. The conditions are often caused by overloading the motor, sustained low voltage, or stalled rotor. Bimetal overloads are convertible from manual to automatic reset. Heaters can be selected as standard class or quick trip class. Starters can be factory ordered with a NO/ (SPOT) Form contact.

8 ^%>, Heavy uty ontactors and Starters ontrol Ratings Max HP Plugging and Jogging Ratings shown are for applications requiring repeated interruptions of stalled motor current or repeated closing of high transient currents encountered in rapid motor reversal, involving more than five openings or closings per minute and more than ten in a ten minute period, such as plug stop, plug reverse or jogging duty. Ratings apply to single speed and multi speed controllers. ontinuous Amp Rating, Service imit The service limit current represents the maximum RMS current, in amperes, which the controller may be expected to carry for protracted periods in normal service. At service limit current ratings, temperature rises may exceed those obtained by testing the controller at its continuous current rating. The trip current of overload relays or other motor protective devices shall not exceed the service limit current ratings of the controller. Ballast Type, Tungsten and Other ischarge Type ighting oads The characteristics of ballast type lamps are such that it is not necessary to derate contactors below their normal continuous current rating. contactors may also be used for controlling tungsten and other discharge type lighting loads, contactors are specifically designed for such loads and are applied at their full rating as listed in the section. Resistance Heating oads Ratings apply to contactors which are employed to switch the load at the utilization voltage of the resistance heating or light producing element with a duty which requires continuous operation of not more than five openings per minute. apacitor Switching KVA Rating When discharged, a capacitor has essentially zero impedance. For repetitive switching by a contactor, sufficient impedance should be connected in series to limit inrush current to not more than times the contactor rated continuous current. In many installations, the impedance of connecting conductors may be sufficient for the purpose. When switching to connect additional banks, the banks already on the line may be charged and can supply additional available short circuit current which should be considered when selecting impedance to limit the current. Technical The ratings for capacitor switching above assume the following maximum available fault currents: -:, Amp RMS Sym '/?-:, Amp RMS Sym :, Amp RMS Sym If available fault current is greater than these values, connect sufficient impedance in series as noted in the previous paragraph. The motor ratings in the table below are NMA standard ratings and apply only when the code letter of the motor is the same as or occurs earlier in the alphabet than is shown in the table below. Motors having code letters occurring later in the alphabet may require a larger controller.
