2 The operation of electric furnaces require large amounts of power to be under constant control. The Transmaster switch is rugged and can withstand this kind of duty. The Joslyn VBT and VBU-T switches operate uniformly on all power factors and are available for system voltages from 15kV up to 230kV. If the primary circuit breaker used as a switching device for control of transformer magnetizing, load and secondary fault currents, this will result in the circuit breaker being opened and closed more than 100 times per day. This wear and tear causes even the most durable breakers to require frequent maintenance. Maintenance is costly! Joslyn engineers worked closely with electric furnace manufacturers to develop the Transmaster Electric Furnace Switch - a heavy duty vacuum switch designed to deliver maintenance-free switching of electric furnaces. 6 The purpose of the independent pole, point on wave, synchronous close system is to reduce transformer energization transients by being able to close each pole at the natural current zero point. The expected benefits include significantly reduced inrush currents, reduced electromechanical stress on transformer bushings and windings and reduced stress on all equipment associated with the closing circuit of the transformer. APPLICATION When an electric furnace switch is called on to close, a random closing occurs, which can energize the transformer at any point on the voltage waveform. This produces high magnitude transient inrush currents rated 1000% of full load current. The point on wave control is designed to energize the transformer at the optimal point on the voltage waveform which provides these BENEFITS: LONGER EQUIPMENT LIFE Reduces mechanical forces on the transformer bushings and windings, resulting in lower total ownership cost INCREASED SAFETY Less electrical stress on transformer interwinding insulation REDUCED MAINTENANCE COSTS Minimal wear on components decreases maintenance requirements Point on Wave Control INCREASED RELIABILITY Reduces stress on all other components of the furnace The RF-2 vertical air break switch is available from 15kV to 230kV with continuous current ratings from 600A to 3000A. 7 Vacuum Interrupter Monitor System The VacStat is the only system that can give you real-time status of your vacuum interrupters. This simple device will notify you immediately of a loss of vaccum through a visual indicator located on the switch and via a contact in the Transmaster control. The VacStat can reduce down time while preventing costly failures during a heating cycle. VacStat will save you time and money by notifying you immediately of vacuum interrupter issues. FEATURES: Real-Time Vacuum Interrupter Status Reduced Down Time Reduced Maintenance Costs Vacuum Interrupter Vacuum Interrupter Monitor Vacuum Interrupter Status Indicator Control Cable Connector Insulator Switch Position Indicator & Counter A simple device is attached to the vacuum interrupter during the manufacturing process. This device along with a simple fiber optic circuit monitors the interrupter to determine the prescence of vacuum. Under normal condition with vacuum present, a fiber optic circuit will conduct light. The visual indicator on the switch will be in a normal (not targeted) state. The control cabinet status indication will be normal. In the event an interrupter loses vacuum, the fiber optic circuit will be blocked. The visual indicator will turn orange to indicate loss of vacuum. The control cabinet status indication will change states. The VacStat can be set to block operation or just provide notification. The user then can schedule maintenance at an appropriate time. 7
8 The Power Circuit Monitor (PCM) has been specifically developed to monitor Joslyn Vacuum Switches. The PCM continuously monitors the system on the load side of the switch and provides an output signal if voltage is detected on the load side of the switch when the switch is in the open position. The PCM will thereby detect a single phasing condition caused by a loss of vacuum inside the vacuum interrupter contact module. The use of PCM s enables the user to: 1. Scheduled repair of switch 2. Reduced repair costs 3. Reduced repair time PCM Sensor Power Circuit Monitor (PCM) Control APPLICATION: Power Circuit Monitors must be used on systems for which the source is grounded. The primary of the furnace transformer must be ungrounded. It does not matter whether the transformer is connected wye or delta. Each user must decide how to use the output of the PCM. Following are three alternatives in the order suggested by Joslyn. 1. The PCM could operate an alarm or light on the operator s control panel. 2. A Joslyn Vac-Rupter switch can be made to open when the PCM operates. The Vac-Rupter Interrupter must be interlocked to prevent reclosing until authorized personnel take appropriate action. 3. The power circuit breaker protecting the furnace system can be automatically opened by the PCM output. If other loads are connected to the same breaker, the isolating switch to the furnace system with the failed vacuum contact must be opened. The breaker can then be reclosed after the isolating disconnect switch is opened. A high potential test would then be performed on the vacuum switch to locate the failed vacuum contact and replace it.
