3 Description The Vira sample cooler is used to cool samples of boiler water or steam. The cooler consists of a stainless steel coil, through which the sample flows, and a stainless steel body, through which cooling water flows in the opposite direction. A pre-drilled mounting bracket is incorporated into both end caps. The NK is also available with a clamp adaptor for connecting to an industry standard ½" sanitary clamp fitting. 4 Available sizes and pipe connections Cooling water inlet and BSP version 1/2" BSP outlet connections NPT version 1/2" NPT Sample tube inlet and BSP version 6mm O/D outlet connections NPT version 6mm O/D Boiler water applications It is necessary to take regular samples of boiler water to test that a boiler is operating at the required TDS (total dissolved solids) level. This should be done even if an automatic TDS control system is fitted since any automatic system should be checked at intervals. When a sample of water is taken from a boiler its pressure reduces and flash steam is formed. If this flash steam were to escape to atmosphere without being condensed the resulting sample would show higher TDS levels than actually existed in the boiler water. To obtain accurate and safe samples it is therefore essential that sufficient cooling is carried out to fully condense any flash steam. 5 Montage ( Installation ) The assembly can be easily reached and forcibly place the sample at a time. Installation must be done vertically. The sample cooler should be installed with an union so that it can be disassembled when requested. As shown in Figure 1, the needle valve should be placed in the sample inlet and the valve of the appropriate type should be placed inside the cooling water. The coolant outlet must be connected to the drainage line or the recycling tank. It should not be connected to the bluff lines or should not be left open. The coolant should be clean and cold (<25 C). Sample output does not require any connection. Sampling Process Sample lines may be hot during sampling. Lines can lead to accidental burns and injuries. During sampling, the coolant inlet valve must be opened before the the sample inlet valve is opened. Otherwise, hot water from the sample outlet may cause serious burns and injuries. Once the sampling is complete, the valve on the next sample inlet must be closed, then the valve is closed in the coolant water The following steps must be followed in order for the sample to be taken in the most accurate and safest way possible. Boiler pressure and temperature should be at nominal operating values. The coolant valve is fully opened and a period of time is required for the sampling vessel to fill with coolant. The sample inlet valve opens slowly. The sample is expected to flow for a while so that the sample analysis can give accurate results. At this point, the remaining water in the sampling vessel will be drained. Sample inlet valve is possible for the sample water temperature to reach 25 C it should be opened as little as possible, or it must be opened chunky. After a sufficient amount of sample has been taken, the valve on the sample inlet then the valve in the inlet of the cooling water is closed.
