1 Pilt's Operating Handbk Aernca - 11AC Chief This manual has been prepared t infrm the pilt f systems and features incrprated in the Aernca Mdel 11AC aircraft. The enclsed perating prcedures and perfrmance data are prvided s that maximum utilizatin can be btained with the utmst safety, ecnmy and serviceability. This manual des NOT replace the FAA apprved placards and perating limits in a specific aircraft. If a difference exists between this manual and the FAA apprved placards / perating limitatins, the FAA apprved placards and perating limitatins shall be the authrity. 2 The Aernca Chief is designed and assembled s that prper care and maintenance will assure lng life t the aircraft. ATTENTION When taxiing dwnwind with the Mdel 11AC, it is advisable in strng and gusty winds t taxi slwly with the stick well frward. Use particular care when turning frm a dwnwind t a crss wind psitin. When a quartering tail wind is experienced, keep the ailern nearest the directin frm which the wind is blwing in a DOWN psitin. With a quartering tail wind, always keep the stick directly away frm the wind directin. Always face directly int the wind when "running up" the engine. Facing the wind tends t eliminate trque-quartering effects and aids engine cling at high RPM. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The "Chief" is a tw place, side by side, high wing mnplane. Basic fuselage cnstructin is welded tubing with fabric cvering. The wings are cmpsed f tw wden spars with aluminum ribs and fabric cvering. The wing leading edges are cvered with aluminum sheet t prvide a mre efficient airfil. Pwer is prvided by a 65 hp engine and fixed pitch prpeller. Engine vibratins are dampened by rubber munt bushings. Gd visin is attained thrugh the use f a ne piece windshield plus large dr and rear quarter windws. Basically the Chief is a cnventinal three cntrl aircraft. The wheel type dual cntrl system prvides smth and nn-fatiguing cntrl. Heal brake pedals are prvided n the pilt's side, and rudder pedals withut brakes n the cpilt's side. A trim tab n the left elevatr cmpensates fr lad differences and prvides fr hands-ff flight. The trim tab cntrl is lcated abve and between the tw ccupants. Engine cntrls are readily accessible frm either seat. Cncealment f cabin cntrl cables prvide greater cabin cmfrt. A large baggage cmpartment is lcated behind the seat t accmmdate luggage and ther items. The famus Aernca Ole Landing gear is incrprated in the Chief. This timetested methd f landing gear cnstructin ensures sturdy yet smth handling n rugh fields. Much f the shck is absrbed in the le, thereby lessening fatigue in the rest f the airframe and wing structure. Ease in grund handling is assured with steer-able leaf spring tail wheel and psitive-acting mechanical brakes. Tie-dwn rings are incrprated at the strut wing attachment pint fr security in the event strage space is nt available.

3 CABIN Plexiglas windws are used thrughut, assuring a minimum f disclratin due t expsure. When cleaning, all grit and freign particles shuld be flushed ff with clean water. Final cleaning shuld be dne with a sft clth and any recmmended type f Plexiglas cleaner. Never use dirty, ily rags t clean Plexiglas. Rapid changes in temperature shuld be avided, such as mving frm a warm hangar t extreme cld, which will cause rapid cntractin and breakage. Allwing fifteen minutes after Plexiglas has cled is recmmended befre starting engine. Vibratin increases pssibility f breakage during cling. The instrument panel is hydr-frmed all metal with a rich grained finish harmnizing with the interir clr scheme f the cabin. Instruments and cntrls are functinally gruped. The primary grup center panel is slped t prvide better visibility f instruments. Decrative center trim may be remved t prvide rm fr additinal instruments withut defacing the panel. Tw ash trays, key type switch, new type cmpass, and tw glve cmpartments are standard equipment in additin t il temperature, il pressure, tachmeter, altimeter and airspeed instruments. The carburetr heat cntrl, switch, cabin heater cntrl, thrttle, mixture cntrl, push/pull main fuel shut-ff are munted in a lwer subinstrument panel lcated between the cntrl clumns and readily accessible t bth ccupants. The auxiliary fuel tank is lcated behind the luggage cmpartment and the fuel valve is n the left side f the cabin directly belw the instrument panel. CAUTION -- Very Imprtant The auxiliary fuel valve shuld be in the "OFF" psitin when the aircraft is n the grund [r at nse-high attitude]. Failure t clse this valve will allw fuel t drain back t the auxiliary tank frm the main tank when in a three pint psitin. Fuel shuld be transfered frm the auxiliary t the main tank during level r gliding flight nly, and when the main tank is less than ne-half full. Always turn auxiliary valve t "OFF" psitin befre landing. CAUTION: Checking fr water in the sediment bwl shuld be dne daily. Operating in cld weather and string in a warm hangar with an unfilled fuel tank r perating in a climate where high humidity is prevalent are mst prbably causes fr cndensatin and the presence f water in the system. Fr cld weather starting, three slw mvements f the primer pump as the prpeller is turning ver will frce fuel directly int the inductin system assuring quick, psitive starting. CAUTION: Be sure fuel vent lines t the tanks are nt plugged. There is a vent fr each tank in the wing utbard f the tank.

Cabin Dr CLOSED Pull dr clsed slwly and psitin dr handle t hrizntal with dr pulled tight shut, check latch secure with sme pressure t try t push dr pen (windws pen as desired) WARNING D nt attempt t turn ver and/r start the engine by hand unless yu have had prper instructin and experience. If pulling the prpeller thrugh by hand is necessary, be sure the master and magnets are in the OFF psitin and the thrttle clsed. Have a pilt at the cntrls and chck/tie dwn the aircraft. When pulling the prpeller thrugh by hand, treat it as if the ignitin switch is turned n. A lse r brken grund wire n either magnet culd cause the engine t fire.

8 CAUTION D nt ver-prime r excessively pump the thrttle (carburetr acceleratr pump) due t the resulting fire hazard. The use f the fuel primer will vary with each engine and temperature cnditin. If the engine is warm, little r n prime is required. During cld weather cnditins, 4 t 6 priming strkes may be required. During cld weather peratin (belw 20 degrees F) it is recmmended that the engine be preheated by directing warm air thrugh the pening in the bttm r frnt f the engine cwl. This practice will prlng the service life f the engine and starter. In very cld weather, it is imprtant t use the prper viscsity engine il and t run the engine sufficiently lng t bring the engine il t the nrmal perating temperature. During grund peratin, the mixture shuld be FULL RICH and the carburetr/alternate air COLD t ensure gd engine cling and filtered air. Prlnged idle belw 1000 RPM is nt recmmended due t plug fuling and insufficient cling air when the aircraft is nt in mtin. BEFORE TAXI 1. Cntrls free 2. Clear area 3. Oil temp increasing 4. 10 Full stall (3 pint) landings are recmmended fr sft r rugh fields. Crsswind appraches can best be accmplished by using the wing dwn, tp rudder methd fllwed by either a full stall r wheel landing technique. Keep the lwer wing int the wind after tuchdwn. D nt drp the tail until airspeed is well belw flying speed. CAUTION The use f wheel brakes is nt recmmended until after the tail wheel is in cntact with the grund. Fr maximum braking, the cntrl stick shuld be FULL AFT. Descent shuld be made with enugh pwer t maintain cylinder and il temperatures in the green arc. If pssible, avid windmilling the engine with the prpeller by reducing airspeed r increasing pwer.
