Consumer Price Index (CPI) Agricultural Commodity Price Bulletin (Year 6: Volume 10) National Consumer Price Index (CPI) 1 in September 2010 was 7.8% higher than in September This is a reasonable increase. The annual increase in the national food index was 6.3 percent points. The nonfood index increased by 10.1 percent points, whilst the Exchange-rate index decreased by 8 percent points in the one year period. (Table 1) Overall CPI increased by 1.1 percent point from August to September 2010, with increases in Food Index by 1.2 percent point, and Non-food Index by 1.0 percent point. Bread and cereal index showed a nominal increase of 0.3 percent point in the period. The Exchange-rate decreased by 0.9 percent point in that one month s period. (Table 1/Annex II) 1 Consumer Price Index (CPI) is an index of the price of consumer goods and services. It can be used to measure the rate of inflation or the cost of living. Page 1

8 Of six locations with CPI data, the highest annual rise in CPI for September 2010 was observed in the case of Jalalabad (11.0 percent points). The CPIs of non-food items showed reasonable annual and monthly changes in the reporting month. Price of agricultural commodities 2.1. Price of wheat Source: CSO There is some upward movement in the price of local wheat in August, September and October. 2 For example, the average price of local wheat in June/July was Afs 13.5/kg. The price was Afs 14.0/Kg in August 2010, which was 15% lower than the last year s August s price level (Afs 16.6/Kg). 2 Summary Table 1/2 Page 3

9 There is not much difference between the price of wheat in September and October. Average retail market price of local wheat in August and September, 2010 was Afs 14/kg and Afs 15.4/kg. In mid-september the price of imported wheat flour was Afs 23.4/kg. Average prices of wheat and imported wheat flour in the first week of October are 15.5 Afs/Kg and 23.6 Afs/Kg. 10 A surge in the price of wheat in international markets from the second half of July mirrored strong evidence of the lower level of production in some of the main wheat-producing countries. The price of wheat in international markets in the first week of October is 40-60% higher than in the first week of July. However, good news is that there is 10% decrease in its price compared to the last month s price. International price of wheat is likely to stabilize now. Border Market Prices Market prices of various commodities for the following seven border markets for September 2010 are shown in Annex VI: Islam Qala (Herat), Torghondi (Herat), Shir Khan (Kunduz), Hairatan (Balkh), Spin Boldak (Kandahar), Zarang (Nimroz) and Torkham (Nangarhar) Price of fruits and vegetables Prices of various types of fruits and vegetables in four markets (Kabul, Kunduz, Herat, Kandahar and Jalalabad) in September/October 2010 are presented in Annex VII Price of livestock and livestock products National average prices of beef and mutton in September 2010 were Afs 173/kg and 246/kg, with annual increases of 17% and 25%. Their prices in mid-october are higher (Afs 181/kg and 254/kg) than in September. 12 2.5. Cost of agricultural inputs The average cost of agricultural labor in September is slightly lower than in August. However, the cost (Afs 274/person/day) is still 23% higher than the last year. The price of best quality, imported urea was Afs 18.2/kg (up 3% compared to August) and DAP was Afs 37.2/kg (up 4% compared to August).
