1 STATISTICAL RELEASE UGANDA BUREAU OF STATISTICS January to April 212 Construction Sector Indices HIGHLIGHTS Annual Changes show that the prices for the Whole Construction Sector (covering material prices, wage rates & equipment hire rates) increased by 15.7% in the year ending April 212 compared to April 211. This is lower than the increases registered for the years ending January to March 212 as shown in Graph 1. The increase in prices in the year ending April 212 was due to: 12.5% increase in prices of inputs for Civil Works 17.1% increase in prices of inputs for Non- Residential Buildings, and 15.6% increase in prices of inputs for Residential Buildings Graph 1: Annual Percentage Price Changes for Years Ending 35.% 3.% 25.% 2.% 15.% 1.% 5.%.% Dec 11 Jan 12 Feb 12 Mar 12 Apr 12 Monthly Changes show that in April 212, the average prices of inputs for the Whole Construction Sector rose insignificantly compared to March 212 price levels. However, in February 212, prices insignificantly dropped as compared to January 212. While the price of inputs for Residential Buildings experienced insignificant price changes in April 212, the price of inputs for Roads Gravel increased by 1.3% in April 212 compared to March 212. The increase was mainly due to a 4.% rise in price of Diesel. Basic Headings (Monthly Changes) In most basic headings (material inputs, equipment hire and wage rates), there was a general fluctuation in prices of inputs throughout the period January to April 212. In April 212, prices for Lime, Diesel and Bitumen rose by 11.8%, 4.%, and 3.7% respectively. On page 1 there is a short commentary highlighting the main changes observed. The graphs on page 1 are derived from Table A Construction Sector Price Indices on page 2 of the statistical release. The first graph shows the price indices for the whole sector for each month for the two years. The second graph shows the monthly average price indices in each month for the whole sector and the major sub-sectors. The charts on page 5 above show the indices for the latest five months for each basic heading. The Consumer Price Index (CPI, rescaled) and the quantity of cement for the domestic market are also shown. (Rescaling means multiplying or dividing the original series by a constant factor so as to compare with the current trends in say CPI) If the bars in the charts are at almost the same level, then they indicate very little (if any) change in prices. An increase in the height of the bars indicates an increase in the prices while a reduction in the height implies a decline in prices. 5
