Consumer Price Index (CPI) Agricultural Commodity Price Bulletin (Year 7: Volume 2) National Consumer Price Index (CPI) 1 in January 2011 was 21.1 percent points higher than in January Annual increase in the national food index was 22.4 percent points. The Non-food index increased by 19 percent points, whilst the Exchange-rate index decreased by 6.0 percent points in the said period. The changes in indexes were substantially higher in the case of Vegetables, Oils and fats, Bread and cereals and Meat. The exchange-rate-index decreased by 6.0 percent points in January 2010 to January (Table 1) CPI increased by 3.7 percent point from ember 2010 to January 2011, with an increase in Food Index by 2.4 percent point and Non-food Index by 5.9 percent points. In that period Bread and Cereal Index increased by 2.4 percent point and the Exchange-rate increased by 0.5 percent point. (Table 1/Annex II) 1 Consumer Price Index (CPI) is an index of the price of consumer goods and services. It can be used to measure the rate of inflation or the cost of living. Page 1

8 Of the six locations with CPI data, the highest annual rise in CPI for January 2011 was observed in the case of Kabul (27.9 percent points), Mazar (26.6 percent points) and Jalalabad (22.4 percent points), where annual increases in Food Indexes were higher by 27 percent points or more. The CPIs of food and non-food items showed reasonable monthly changes. Price of Agricultural Commodities 2.1. Price of Wheat Domestic Price of Wheat Kabul Hirat Jalalabad Mazar Khost Kandahar Source: CSO The average national price of local wheat was Afs 17.2/Kg in mid-february It was Afs 17.2/Kg in mid-january 2011 too. (Table 3) Page 3

9 From October 2010 to January 2011 there was an upward movement in the price of local wheat. 2 The average price of local wheat in October was Afs 15.5/kg. The price was Afs 15.8/Kg in November 2010, which was about 4% lower than November 2009 s level (Afs 16.4/Kg). Wheat price developments in October/November/ember 2010 compared very well with its price developments in For example, the price in ember 2010 (Afs 16.5/kg) was only 1.5% higher than ember 2009 price. In 2010 wheat price had dropped from January till July. The price development in January/February 2011 did not follow the 2010 price pattern. Its price was nominally higher (Afs 23.6/kg) in October. 10 In last 2 months the price increased by 4% (from Afs 23.6/kg in ember 2010 to Afs 24.5/kg in the third week of February). (Annex V) International Market Price of Wheat In Pakistan there is small but gradual increase in national average price of wheat and wheat flour in recent weeks. The national average price (for 40 kg) was PKR 1,060 in mid-january and PKR 1,071 in mid-february. Border Market Prices Market prices of various commodities in January 2011 for the following seven border markets are shown in Annex VI: Islam Qala (Herat), Torghondi (Herat), Shir Khan (Kunduz), Hairatan (Balkh), Spin Boldak (Kandahar), Zarang (Nimroz) and Torkham (Nangarhar) Price of Fruits and Vegetables Prices of various types of fruits and vegetables in four markets (Kabul, Kunduz, Herat, Kandahar and Jalalabad) in January/February 2011 are presented in Annex VII Price of Livestock and Livestock Products National average prices of beef and mutton in January 2011 were Afs 182/kg and 261/kg, with annual increases of 3% and 24%. Their prices in mid-february were Afs 180/kg and 256/kg. The price of chicken was Afs 105/kg in January 2011, which was 3% lower than its price in ember 2010 but 4% lower than a year ago. Cost of Agricultural Inputs The cost of agricultural labor in ember (Afs 276/person/day) is 3% higher than in ember. The cost is 26% higher than the cost in the same month last year. In January the price of best quality, imported urea was Afs 17.3/kg (down 2% compared to ember) and DAP Afs 41.2/kg (down 3% compared to ember). Compared to January last year, urea and DAP in January 2011 were costlier by 2% and 31%. Among agricultural inputs, DAP had become substantially dearer in the reporting period.
