1 United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service Circular Series FOP October 2009 Soybean Oil Prices Diverge on Different Supply Situations Soybean Oil Price ($/ton) $900 $850 $800 $750 $700 $650 $600 3-Aug 10-Aug 17-Aug 24-Aug 31-Aug 7-Sep 14-Sep 21-Sep 28-Sep Brazil Argentina US US soybean oil prices have fallen significantly below those in South America over the past 6 weeks indicative of ample US supplies in contrast to a growing tightness in Argentina and Brazil. US prices have declined 13 percent since early August as large stocks and growing prospects for record soybean production boost available supplies. Weak domestic demand, which has fallen steadily since 2005/06, is also contributing to the lower prices. In contrast, growing demand in Argentina and Brazil, particularly in the manufacture of biofuels, has kept their prices above US levels. In addition, limited supplies of soybeans available for crush, has further reduced potential soybean oil availability adding to recent price strength, particularly in Argentina. Lower prices have raised the competitiveness vis-à-vis Argentina and Brazil and therefore, US soybean oil exports are forecast to reach a record 1.5 million tons. Approved by the World Agricultural Outlook Board/USDA

2 PRICES U.S. soybean export bids, FOB Gulf, in the first week in October averaged $380 per ton. The moderate drop in prices is largely attributed to market expectations of a record crop supported by higher yields despite reported harvest delays. As of week-ending October 1, 2009, U.S. soybean sales commitments (outstanding sales plus accumulated exports) to China totaled 12.5 million tons, compared to 7.7 million a year ago. Total commitments to the world amounted to 20.6 million tons compared to 11.0 million the same period last year. TRADE CHANGES IN U.S. Gulf/FOB ($/Metric ton) Oct-07 Dec-07 U.S. Gulf Soybean Export Bids Feb-08 Apr-08 Jun-08 Aug-08 Oct-08 Dec-08 Feb-09 Apr-09 Jun-09 Aug-09 Oct-09 U.S. soybean exports are boosted 0.7 million tons to a record 35.5 million supported by strong early commitments and reduced competition. Brazil s soybean exports are cut 0.8 million tons to 23.7 million with prospects of larger domestic use. Paraguay s soybean exports are boosted 0.9 million tons to 4.9 million supported by larger exportable supplies and greater prospects of exports to Europe. China s soybean imports are boosted 1.0 million tons to 39.5 million to offset the lower domestic crop and stronger crush demand. India s palm oil imports are up 0.8 million tons to 6.4 million with prospects of continued strong demand.
