The belt has 61% open area for steam penetration. 3.0mm (200mm and 260mm widths) Hole Belting is intended to be near-universal in application to handle both standard and frieze yarns. Many plants have found that this medium hole belt permits running just one belt style for both yarn styles without having to change belts when switching back and forth from frise and standard yarns. Other plants have not found this belts to be truly universal. The 3.0mm belting has 39.8% open area for steam penetration. 1.5mm and 2.38mm Hole Belting (offered in 200mm widths only) is designed specifically for high twist frieze (frise) yarns. The small holes help reduce possibility of yarn filaments falling into the holes and becoming entangled. The 2.38 belting has been the most common choice for frieze yarns because of productivity and cost considerations. The 2.38 belt offers 33% open area for steam penetration. JOINING BELT ENDS by the plant is done either by riveting or by spot welding or a combination of both riveting and welding. Plants with only a few Superbas or that rarely change belt styles generally use the riveting technique. Plants with many Superbas or that frequently change belting may prefer the more efficient spot welding technique. RIVETING: Epic offers rivets, hardened riveting tools for installing rivets, and riveting line-up tools used to join the ends of the stainless belting for easier rivet installation. Often, two of the holes are riveted using rivets and riveting tools to assure alignment prior to welding. The Spot Welder is light in weight (30 lbs or 14 kg) with an overall body size of 14X4X7" (36X10X18cm). It operates on standard 220V, single phase current and is equipped with a 30 ampere fuse. STAINLESS ROLLERS consist of internal bushings and outer stainless rollers on a stationary stainless shaft and holding bracket. Advantages include positive rotation, minimal belt slippage and extended service life. Individual rollers can be replaced. There are three types of stainless roller assemblies: 1) for the inlet/outlet chambers [Note: Many companies have changed internal mounting brackets and also use this roller in the central chamber.], 2) for the central chamber, and 3) for the RTV cooling fan units found at entrance between the presteamer and tunnel and at exit between tunnel and winder. Hardened rollers and hardened roller assemblies are also available. Note: If rollers are replaced, keep set screws down to prevent moisture accumulation. TEFLON & BLUE NYLON SUPPORT ROLLERS: Epic Teflon rollers may be used within the steam chamber as well as for external use. The blue Nylon rollers are for external use only. SP02 Epic was the first to introduce a lamella with the 5/16" Teflon seal (versus the original 3/16" or 4.7mm Teflon Seal). Lamellas are most typically replaced when wear from the tightening roll reduces Teflon thickness to about 1/16" or 1.6mm. The original 3/16" or 4.7mm Teflon only allowed for 1/8" or 3.2mm of wear prior to replacement. The Epic 5/16" lamella allows for 1/4" or 6.4mm of wear prior to replacement. This Epic development almost doubles the life of the lamella and correspondingly cuts the cost of downtime, replacement part and labor in replacing lamellas by about 50%. See Drawing. Standard Epic lamellas come in a number of different lengths so that the plant may match the lamella to the length variations of the supplied tightening roll. Standard lamellas are available with 5/16" (8mm) Teflon or Graphited Teflon. On the standard 200mm machine, graphited lamellas have generally been found to provide longer wear life than the pure Teflon lamellas but caution should be exercised in using a graphited lamella on the upper roll because of the possibility of wear particles causing yarn staining. Nevertheless, some plants are now successfully using graphited lamellas on both upper and lower rolls. LAMELLAS FOR 2S MACHINE: Because of the different design of the 2S machine, only longer lasting graphited Teflon is used. Epic's graphited Teflon lamella for the 2S machine is 9.5mm or 3/8" thick. Although Epic Nomex material exhibits very low stretch, some stretch will occur over time. If the material

29 SP05 becomes slack, cut off excess and resew as shown. Most plants sew Nomex belting by hand using a curved upholstery needle or a large straight needle (available from a local sewing notions store) using Nomex thread. 7" and 8 1/4" Counterbands Cut counterband about 10" (254mm) longer than the finished length. Fold the two ends over approximately 2" (51mm). The two belt ends are then overlapped approximately 6". Using a tight stitch with Nomex thread, the ends are joined using a rectangular and cross (X) stitch pattern. 9/16" and 3" Tie-Down Tapes Cut tape about 5" (125mm) longer than the finished length and join in the same manner as the counterbands. The ends are usually folded over about 1" (25mm) and the overlap is about 3" (76mm). The same rectangular and cross (X) stitch sewing pattern is used. It involves a frame mounted at the center of the Superba holding four rolls, one of which swivels to correct any misalignment in the returning counterband. At both ends of the frame, the plant installs sets of three tracking rolls, two of which are convex and serve to maintain straight tracking. IMPORTANT NOTE: Plants using the very wide counterbands have reported that they do not (1) appear to reduce steam penetration, 2) cause uneven dye acceptance, or 3) cause any significant loss in yarn bulk. HOWEVER, PLANTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO FULLY TEST ON ONE TUNNEL TO ASSURE COMPATIBILITY.

The SINGLE TENSION DEVICE has four different cammed tension settings for a single tension capsule. There are seven different tension capsules. This yields 28 different tension settings from the single device. The DOUBLE TENSION DEVICE has eight different cammed tension settings. There are also seven different capsules. This yields almost an unlimited range of tension settings from very light to very heavy. THE EPIC DIAL STORAGE TENSOR provides extemely smooth control of yarn tensions and allows for rapid dialcontrolled tension adjustment when a different type of yarn is run on the machine. The design keeps all yarn contact over ceramics, eliminating pinching and fiber damage that can come from ball, disc, or capsule type devices. The device is extremely easy to maintain. YARN BRK KNOCK-OFF DEVICE, on a creel, is used for sensing yarn breaks and relaying an electric signal to the Superba control panel to shut the machine down in the event of a break. The device is mounted between the creel and the heatsetting machine. The Detector Switch operates on less than 0.5 amperes and either a 110 or 220 volt system. The device is preset to send a shut-off signal when tension falls below 0.5 grams of pressure. The device can be adjusted to send a signal at pressures between 0.2 and 2.0 grams. The device is equipped with a ceramic feeler lever. The device may also be mounted on the take-up winder to shut down the winder and heatsetting machine.
